  I know I'm missing something, so I need some help, please. I have Windows 7 with Office 2007. When I open my directories there are 4: Documents, music, photos and videos. I tried to open a file in the Documents and I have seen the same document in the other directories and also listed under my Computer OS (C). Why do my files appear in all directories? Please advise me.

  Directories such as the 'Documents', 'Music', 'Images' and 'Vidéo' are really (in the way which view you them from the menu of the Start button or office) "links" to the actual locations.

  • 'Documents' folder is in one place:
    %UserProfile%\Documents
  • Your "Music" folder is in one place:
    %UserProfile%\Music
  • Your "Pictures" folder is in one place:
    %UserProfile%\Pictures
  • Your 'Vidéo' folder is in one place:
    %UserProfile%\Videos

  '%UserProfile%' is an environment variable which translates by (your computer translated for you when typed in / used) the path for the connected on the user profile directory.  By default, this would be C:\USERS\USERNAME.

  Now - there are "Public" places in each of these users on the same computer could share things between them.  These places is...

  • %PUBLIC%\Documents
  • %PUBLIC%\Music
  • %PUBLIC%\Pictures
  • %PUBLIC%\Videos

  The mention "PUBLIC %" is an environment variable which translates by (your computer translated for you when typed in / used) the path to the directory of the user PUBLIC profile.  By default, this would be C:\USERS\PUBLIC.

  And if that's not enough for you - there is a way to be able to view each of these folders (your Documents and public acts, your music and music Public, etc.) in one accessible place - by using the feature of "libraries".

  Even when viewed using libraries - however - the physical location is always singular.  If you put something in 'Documents', it is (by default) will '% USERPROFILE%\Documents' (C:\USERS\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\) and not the case elsewhere.  You should be able to see from the icon from your desktop to the 'Documents' or 'Documents' library, but they are just pointers/links/fancy shortcuts to the ACTUAL physical location on disk represented by '% USERPROFILE%\Documents' (C:\USERS\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\).

  Make sense?

  Think more if it is not.  Here's the easy way:

  Your stuff is on this drive here:

  • %UserProfile%\Documents (default: C:\USERS\YourUsername\Documents)
  • %UserProfile%\Music (default: C:\USERS\YourUsername\Music)
  • %UserProfile%\Pictures (default: C:\USERS\YourUsername\Pictures)
  • %UserProfile%\Videos (default: C:\USERS\YourUsername\Videos)

  You can just get in these physical locations via different paths.  They all end up in the same end-location real.  You do not have many copies of the files.  (You have not more than one copy of this large video file that you created, UNLESS you make a copy.  "It is SIMPLY stored in %USERPROFILE%\Videos (C:\USERS\YourUsername\Videos).)

  It depends on what you normally do with the latter. JPG files.  If you just want to view them, Photo Viewer Windows is fine.  If you want to change, then you will need to assign to a program on your computer of image editing.

  When I installed photoshop (CS2), I asked it opens almost all PDF formats.  I now want a differrent program to open PDF files and I want photoshop to stop automatically opening PDF files.  Do I have to reinstall the software to do this?

  No need to reinstall. It depends on your current operating system, but if you use windows, simply right click any PDF file > open with > choose default program. Select the software from the list and don't forget to check the box "always use the program selected to open this type of file".

  Maybe a recent system update has reset your system preferences > General > recent items to zero.

  

  Type a number (for example, 10);

  Quit the system preferences;

  Leave the Pages then revive Pages;

  Open some documents to repopulate open the recent item.

  Any improvement?

  If no improvement, shut down your computer and restart.

  "Recent articles" are at the level of the system and refers to other applications, not just the Pages.

  Or just install an alternative pdf viewer as the free tracker software Xchange pdf viewer that happens to have a cutting tool built into it.

  Hi chrismarks1,

  I think you can be confused bookmarks with thumbnails. If you click on the miniatures Page icon (the one above the bookmarks icon), you can delete a page by clicking on its thumbnail, clicking the delete page (icon of the Recycle Bin). Just make sure that you see the PDF file in Acrobat (rather than Acrobat Reader), you cannot remove the drive pages.

  You don't have a program on your system to open a .dat file and you will not be able to get one or the other because it can be actually any type of file.  In some cases, you can open them if you know the actual file type, and in others you can open them if you use the same e-mail program AND you are the original sender!  It's a problem without a clear solution, other than trial and error with best guess (or, contact the sender to find out exactly what it was attached).

  If the file is winmail.dat, then it is caused by e-mail programs used.  Here's the info on it: http://facstaff.gpc.edu/~jbenson/resource/winmail.htm.  This sometimes happens with attachments in e-mail programs, especially when each person uses a different e-mail program (or with some programs in particular as Yahoo mail email).

  Here is an article on the opening of the .dat files: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/open-dat-file-extension-in-windows-quickly/.  It boils down to determine what was the original program who made it and what was his type of original file (so you can change it and use the right program to open the file).  One way is to ask the sender of the email is what the .dat file - they can give you all another name of file and then you know and can just change the extension, convert the file or get a program to open this type of file.

  Here's a third article on opening the .dat files: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fileextensions/f/dat-file.htm.  Among other things, he suggested to try Notepad first, since this program opens up a lot of files and maybe .dat file text.

  From your post, it seems that this is not an Adobe PDf file - it is one down.

  I run Acrobat Professional so that I can change/brand place/comment in the PDF files. At one point recently I noticed "Acrobat Reader DC" in the name of the file at the top of the page. I do not have ask this or do anything to get there that I was aware of this. I adjusted for the new look of the screen and edited several files without incident. But yesterday, I opened a large file which had been addressed to me in Dropbox. When I downloaded and opened it and tried to change it, the selection tool was not aligned properly, so the selected areas were elsewhere on the page, where the cursor was. I restarted my computer and was able to change the file more or less normally (I noticed more little glitches with this CD player but I can live with them). But when tried to save the file with a new file name, like I always do to differentiate files that changed since the original files, the save window is empty. There is no option to save the file with a new file name. In fact. There is no option to save the file with the changes! I thought maybe it was a problem with this file only, but when I tried to edit a file provided by regular e-mail, I met the same problem trying to save to a new file name. What is the relationship between my old Acrobat Professional and Acrobat Reader DC? Why can't save files normally? I managed to save the changes I did by saving it in the cloud to Adobe (I had to then because I could not send the file by e-mail because of its size - I tried to send it to me)., but I'd rather widely navigate in Windows Explorer to work with files. I suspect that there is some simple aspects about what I am simply absent or do not know. Can anyone help?
