  Not quite, but pretty close. Media Direct could not lock the boot sector. It must be a BIOS lock or a mechanism of protection provided by your antivirus software.  Given that, I would check your program settings then for all that prevents changes to the boot sector.   Follow these steps:

  Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows.  Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) won't fix this!

You MUST uninstall the trial for free and download/run the removal tool before installing updates, Windows Service Packs, or updates IE and before installing your new anti-virus application.
