  • Buffer overflow

Hello... I hope someone can help me! I just turned on my computer and when I try to open Internet Explorer, I get a message from my McAfee SecurityCenter, saying "Buffer Overflow blocked" with a yellow exclamation point. He then said:
McAfee has automatically blocked a buffer overflow.
    On this buffer overflow
    File: C:\Program may Explorer\iexplore.exe
Buffer overflows can cacuse legitimate programs to fail. Other programs that are the buffer overflows, however, can be used to damage your computer, compromising safety and damage important files.
    He asked me then either:
Confidence in the future to this activity
    Close this alert

So I can't get Internet Explorer to work. I get the same alert. I did some reading and saw that the overflow is an attack, and I hope the McAfee caught, but how to stop this buffer overflow so that I can get my computer working again? I am writing from another computer, since I can't get the internet right now.

    Thank you

    Hi, ND,

on the Helper.dll malicious DLL, see: http://www.greatis.com/appdata/d/h/helper.dll.htm.
You are infected with the Infostealer.Banker.D Trojan.

Try to use as SUPERAntispyware (freeware) and Ad-Aware (freeware).

When everything has failed, HijackThis v2.0.2 (http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the tool to use (in conjunction with other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on its own, but it will help you to identify and remove any hijackware / spyware with the help of an expert.

    Description
Krystian Kloskowski has found out a [critical] vulnerability in QuickTime Player, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.

The vulnerability is due to an error of border in QuickTimeStreaming.qtx during the construction of a string to write to a debug log file. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow for example tricking a user in the display of a malicious web page that references a file SMIL containing a URL that is too long.

A successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code.

The vulnerability is confirmed in version 7.6.6 (1671) for Windows. Other versions may also be affected.

    [NO] Solution
A hotfix or an update is not currently available.

EDIT: Due to this vulnerability in QuickTime, Secunia reports now all my browswers (IE, FF, Opera) as being insecure.

    QuickTime 7.6. 7 was released http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ ;

and Secunia PSI removed this vulnerability to his list of (In) Secure Browsing.

  • Why do I get "mscms.dll is not a valid windows image" on everything I try?

I'm working on the kinks of swap hard drive in my Dell E310. The original tested 'ready to die' so I installed a new. I bought the backup for XP Pro disk, when I bought the computer. I loaded the operating system on the new drive and did the updates (80 or almost). I regularly get the message "the file or dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscms.dll is not a valid windows image."  What now?

I've damaged my file mscms.dll on purpose and could not get any message about it even though I know that it is corrupt - maybe I wasn't quite hard.   I know that some other mscms.dll errors, but they are different.

Tell me what you're doing to regularly get the message because I'd like to see it.

After reinstalling and apply the updates of 80 or more, one of them was Service Pack 3?

If you are not sure which SP you re running, click Start, run, and in the type box:

    Msinfo32

Click OK to see your system information and Service Pack and what does say?

If the rest of your system works well, you can use Explorer to navigate to the c:\windows\system32 folder and rename your file to mscms.dll suspicious to a name, remember (like: mscms.bad).

So if your Windows File Protection is not working properly, it will notice the missing file and quickly and quietly, to replace the missing file with a backup copy.

Wait a few seconds... then press F5 in your Explorer window to refresh the view and see that the file has been replaced and you have the mscms.bad and a new copy of mscms.dll.

You should see a message like this in your newspaper observer event system:

    Event type: Information
    Event source: Windows File Protection
    Event category: no
    Event ID: 64002
    Description:
File replacement was attempted on the protected system file c:\windows\system32\mscms.dll. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the system file is 5.1.2600.5627.

Restart and see how things look now.

I can also send you a version SP2 or SP3 file mscms.dll via my SkyDrive and you can rename your suspicious file and replace to see if that helps your condition.  You might have some settings do not match here.

I am havin problems with my computer, when I start my computer or open a page or try to download anything it comes so far... The application or DLL c:/progna~1/windows~3/datamngr/datamngr.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against you instattation disk... I have a lot of problems in trying to solve how to fix this, as I don't know that much about computers. and I don't have the installation disc, I use windows xp I would be great if someone could help me please thank you. Kayleigh lindsay

It also suggests that you can not run a software antivirus... If this is something you need to heal very quickly.  However, installing an antivirus application - if your PC is already infected - is usually ineffective.

I suggest you do the following-
    (1) download and run a full scan using the Scanner for Ms.  Available here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
It does not install, is therefore more difficult for malware to block.
    (2) if that was clean, then get an anti-virus in real-time as soon as POSSIBLE.  There are many good choices (Norton, McAfee, etc.) which costs money, and several good without applications, including MS Security Essentials available here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials
Note!  If you have another antivirus installed, do not add MSE.  Run two at once is precarious - they will conflict with each other.
Also, make sure that your windows firewall is turned on, or you have another 3rd party firewall installed.
  • Rstrui.exe - bad Image of the application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\Wbem\Framedyn.dll is not a valid windows image. AND the exe task manager. -Bad guess. The application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\VDMDBG. DLL is not a valid windows image.

I use WIndows XP.  After that THINKPOINT is presented on my system, I have not been able to access my task manager or restore my system to an earlier date.

I have checked Kellys Korner and various other suggestions on the internet, but have had no luck with anything.

It shows that the HKEY value for the Task Manager is set to 0.  Don't know if that helps.

I BELIEVE I have the THINK POINT removed from my system.  I use Microsoft Security, Ad-Ware and Malwarebytes Anti - Malware.  Between the 3, it seems I have everything.

But now I can not restore my system, or use my TASK MANAGER.

    Help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Bindifer

    Think like a malicious software...
It infects your system and is not to be found and removed.
What are you most likely to use to find and remove malware?
Internet, Google, Task Manager, regedit, restore the system command prompt, etc...
The malware is often afflicts one or more of these components to try to trick into thinking you need to perform a system restore, a repair facility, or even to reinstall your XP from scratch.  None of these things are necessary since you can usually just to thwart malware.
If the referenced files are completely absent from your system, you will see messages like this when you try to run the applications:
Taskmgr.exe - Unable to locate component
This application has failed to start because VDMDBG.dll is not found.  Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Rstrui.exe - Unable to locate component
This application has failed to start because framedyn.dll was not found.  Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Sometimes you can click through the OK messages to access the System Restore screen, but the restoration of the system is still broken.
If the referenced files are present on the system, but somehow corrupted, you will see messages like this when you try to run the applications:
    Taskmgr.exe - bad Image
The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\VDMDBG.dll is not a valid Windows image.  Please check this against your installation diskette.
    Rstrui.exe - bad Image
The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\framedyn.dll is not a valid Windows image.  Please check this against your installation diskette.
Sometimes you can click through the OK messages to access the System Restore screen, but the restoration of the system is still broken.
These files are part of the file 3498 who cares about Windows File Protection, so unless the WFP is also broken it is likely that files are missing completely (you get a different error message).  What is more likely is that the files are somehow corrupt or have been replaced by incorrect files.
Assuming that XP is installed on your C drive and in the windows folder, XP keeps copies of 3498 files that he cares about this issue:
    c:\Windows\System32\dllcache
On a health care system, Windows File Protection keeps track of 3498 protected files and quickly and quietly replaces all the files in the list that appears missing from the backup folder.  File protection Windows will not replace the files if they are somehow corrupted or replaced by bad files.
You can simply copy the backup files in the dllcache folder in the folder where are the suspects or missing files.
Using Explorer, navigate to the folder c:\windows\system32\dllcache and individually to copy the backup files in there and then navigate the folders where the suspect or incorrect files are and paste in the copied files.
Depending on your installation, you can also find copies of the files in this folder:
    c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
Answer Yes, if you are prompted to replace existing files.
Test your functions now and then to reboot your system to make sure the changes 'stick', and then fix any problems.

Do, or do not. There is no test.

I need YOUR voice and the points for helpful answers and propose responses. I'm saving for a pony!
