I bought my laptop with Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium installed on it.  I've since upgraded to Windows 7.  Unfortunately, there are a few programs that will not work under Windows 7 little matter what I do.

So, I would try to run a virtual Windows Vista system.  The problem is that I can't find my disk with the operating system of Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium on it.

Download the Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium operating system so that I can burn a disc for a back-up or I can order a drive with the OS on it?

    Thank you!

You can not upgrade to Windows 7, and then use the Vista OS you used as part of the upgrade to install another (even virtual).

There is no Vista free download legal available.

And Microsoft provide no DVD for computers of the brand OEM (Dell, HP, etc).

Borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc).
A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.

There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.

  • Vista 32 bit Home Premium upgrade to Windows 7

I have been using Windows Vista, 32-bit, Home Premium with success.  Recently, it has been suggested to me that I had to upgrade to Windows 7.  I want to keep, at least, I currently have the same capabilities.  I have a few questions.

    1. because I don't want to back up or modify files or programs, is it wise to upgrade to Windows 7, 32 bit, Home Premium?

    2. in the case, which version do you recommend?

    3. should I download it from Microsoft or do I have to download it also?

    4. If not should I buy in a store?  Could you recommend one?

5 is it complicated to install?  Do you know a good site that could help me to install it?

    6. Finally you would give a price range that I have to pay?

I know this has been long, but it seems to be a complex issue.

The only legal Windows 7 download available is now Microsoft, as Microsoft has stopped DigitalRiver Windows 7 ISO downloads.

  • DVD won't play in Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium Media Center.

I tried many DVDs in my Windows 7, 64-bit Home Premium system, and none of them will play in the Media Center, with the exception of a 1955 film that plays without problem. I guess it was a good year. In the lower right corner of the Media Center, a window says: "Play DVD - Windows Media Center cannot detect a video DVD in the DVD - Rom drive. Insert a video DVD in the drive." Apparently, the DVD is not detected. What is a missing codec problem? I read about downloading the Codec of the user, only to cause more problems, and I did a lot of searching for an answer to this and found a countless number of users having problems with DVD in Media Center and no collective solution. How can it be this difficult? What is the problem with Windows 7? Why can I play a DVD of a film of 1955 (Mr. Roberts) and not of today's movies? The only solution that I come up with to this day, even after checking with the maufacturer of my optical drive, should consider buying the codec itself, if that is what is lacking, or a DVD player to possibly of Roxio. But after the piece of hugh of money I paid for my software Windows 7, I would not have bought anything others of another company. I wouldn't think to go back to XP, but I've had far fewer problems. Any help would be appreciated. Don

Hi Mary - thank you very much for your answer. My PC is a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop computer. I just got the phone is turned off after a few hours of troubleshooting with Dell hardware and software services. Dell is sending a technician to replace my optical drive. They hope that clears the problem, but if not, they say that I might have to reinstall Windows 7. This is happening due to your pointing me in the right direction with your post, and troubleshooting I could do before, I called Dell. I had different problems for a while, and maybe they'll finally get fixed. Thanks again, Don Don

Yes, it will work. However I recommend to buy the disk to upgrade of the United Kingdom.

The Windows Vista DVD upgrade that you get in the United Kingdom is different from what they get in the United States.

  • Vista 64 Bit Home Premium does not start when a disc is in the optical drive

I tried to understand this for a long time, but I thought I might as well ask for help.  I use Vista 64 - bit Home Edition Premium and the problem I have is that I cannot restart my machine if a disc is in the optical drive. Specifically, if I have a DVD or Bluray disc in the optical drive (IE a BD - ROM drive). When I restart my computer and a disk is present, the startup process is going past the initial windows screen, but that's how far it goes. My desktop (I don't have a password to connect). Initially, I thought it was a matter of priority to boot but the boot process starts from the hard drive but stops at half way through. Then, I went into the BIOS and removed the optical drive completely from the boot priority list.  But there is no change in behavior. The process stops with the only thing visible on the splash screen is a black screen and the hard drive light flashes and goes out from time to time.  I use this computer as my Home Theater PC and sometimes I have to restart my machine when a movie DVD or a Bluray movie is in the optical drive. I would appreciate any response that can help me solve this problem...

    Thanks in advance...

There may be something wrong with the files on your hard disk.  We will try to update to see if it helps:

Do a startup repair, boot from the disk Installation of Windows Vista genuine (or one that you can borrow from someone) or a recovery disc.  Here is the procedure: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html.  You may need to change the BIOS to do first the CD drive in the boot sequence to boot from the CD.  To do this, hold the screen that tells you the key F to push to enter the menu start or start of installation.  Push it quickly. Make the changes, save your work and exit.  Put the CD in the drive and reboot.  When you are prompted, press any key to boot from the CD.

If you do not have a floppy disk, you can make a bootable recovery disk by using http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD.

If this does not resolve the problem, try the following:

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps (I believe you need a disc for Installation of Vista to do that, even if some Installtion OEM disc might work, but probably not all the recovery discs).

    1. put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.

    2. press a key when you are prompted.

    3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.

    4. click on repair your computer.

    5. click on the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

    6. in the System Recovery Options dialog box, click command prompt.

    7. type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note If rebuilding the BCD does not resolve the startup problem, you can export and delete the BCD, and then run this option again. In doing so, you ensure that the BCD is completely rebuilt. To do this, type the following commands at the command prompt Windows RE:

    ·        bcdedit/export C:\BCD_Backup

    ·        c:

    ·        Boot CD

    ·        BCD attrib s h - r

    ·        Ren c:\boot\bcd BCD.old

    Bootrec /RebuildBcd

If this does not work, or if you do not have the disk, try EasyBCD http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 and see if that works and does everything well.  Make sure what you are doing or you could mess up your boot files and you'd be in a lot of trouble.

I don't know if the problem is even caused by startup files (but it is possible if it is not the BIOS), but you'd better check and if the procedures are followed to the letter as stated there is no harm in trying.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

    Hi VanHylant,
