13.10 Ubuntu / kernel 3.11 support
Is there a timeline for support for what will be the predominant desktop Linux distribution at the time of its release?
- The TP should focus on support: 12,04 LTS, 13.04 and 13.10.
- 13.04 12.10 and even are not supported from the beginning of 2014.
- Almost everyone runs LTS, or one of the last two versions at some point (all other versions are not supported at this time here)
- Details at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases
I know that this should be obvious and should have been discussed before, but I'm just trying to give good feedback for the tech preview.
If anyone has a patch that works, (similar to 3.10 questions), hook me up!

Host kernel taken Linux supported for vmware Server 2?
VMware is advertising that VMware server can be installed in 64 bit, Linux, but that's not true. I can't install it in one of my 64-bit Linux host. Only legacy distributions are supported. I use openSuse 11.2 64 bit or Ubuntu 9.10.
Is it true that VMware is NOT recent Linux kernels of Pentecost compatible 2.6.3x? Only legacy host kernels Linux is supported?
When this catastrophic situation will be fixed in the new version of Pentecost?
None of the patches to install VMserver or workstation on more recent than AFAIK 2.6.26 kernels are officially released by VMware.
If you really think that you need a core of bleeding edge, you must use these patches not supported.

No Bluetooth on Satellite C50-B-15N with Ubuntu 15.04
Just bought this laptop, and was happy about, until I noticed that my Bluetooth device is not available in my BONES. Bluez says there is no Bluetooth device connected, but lshw says there IS one. A Wi - Fi connection works normally.
lsmod | grep-i shows from toshiba:
toshiba_acpi 28672 0
1 16384 toshiba_acpi sparse_keymap
WMI 20480 1 toshiba_acpi
toshiba_haps 16384 0
toshiba_bluetooth 16384 0So I guess it must run, also because lshw shows there is a bluetooth device.
My "special" keys (adjusting brightness, touchpad toggle etc.) work either, which might be a related issue.
I tried with toshset, but it says: "light of kernel toshiba support not enabled. '
Is there a solution? I started thinking about returning the laptop because of this... :-(
As I'm not mistaken, the laptop supports Atheros WLan and BT combo card.
I recommend you to check the Ubuntu community to get support for this device:

-Hello
MySafe seems to be a 3rd third party tool. Has nothing to do with Toshiba.
Ubuntu is also not supported. However, in my opinion, you installed MySafe to access these files
Without MySafe installed, you will not be able to recover the files secured by MySafe. It's my personal opinion

We are trying to install a PCIe 6251 DAQ card in a box of Gentoo 64 bit running Linux kernel 2.6.28 - gentoo-r5 4.3.2 - gcc and glibc - 2.8. We have installed RPM utilities to manage the installation. The current problem is that we are not able to compile and install the kernel modules: nidmxfk, nimsdrk, nimstsk and nipxirmk. Here's a summary of what we have done so far, and to what extent we got.
First of all, we have changed the configuration of the kernel that we could export the init_mm unused symbol by changing the configuration option of the CONFIG_UNUSED_SYMBOLS = o kernel and recompile the kernel. Then we installed LabView 8.6.1. Then we ran the nation 1.9 installer who has installed the source code in vain on the compilation. To resolve this problem, we have changed the function of pte_offset to pte_offset_kernel by editing the file/usr/local/natinst/nation/configures following the instructions here:
http://decibel.NI.com/content/docs/doc-4511
We were then able to compile and install the kernel nation module thanks to:
. / configure
do
make installlsmod said that nation has been properly installed. Then we ran the installer for DAQmx 8.0.1 by:
. / INSTALL - nodeps
To do this, we have received errors indicating that LabView support could not be installed because check addictive (incorrectly we think) stated that labviewbase86 has not been installed; This caused the installer to have an abortion. Therefore, we refused to install support for LabView 8.6 and revived the installation program which produces the output:

At this point, after reading this report, we used the Gentoo rc update utility to add several scripts for the boot runlevel initialisation:
update of RC - a boot nipple
update of RC - a bunch of nipxirmu
update of RC - a bunch of mxssvr
update of RC - a bunch of nisvcloc
update of RC - a bunch of nidevlduWhen the computer reboots, you get an error message indicating that the following kernel modules are not: nidmxfk, nimsdrk, nimstsk and nipxirmk. lsmod shows that the nation and nipalk are installed, but no other kernel modules NOR are present. modprobe-l shows that only nation and nipalk are available.
So we have several questions:
1. we install drivers in the correct order? Should use us NI-VISA 4.5 or NOR-488. 2 rather than DAQmx 8.0.1?
2. What kernel modules should be loaded for this equipment run? How to compile and install the ones that we have yet, specifically nidmxfk, nimsdrk, nimstsk and nipxirmk? Are there others?
3. How can we get the installer to properly recognize that we have installed LabView Core and install support for LabView? Are there additional kernel modules related to the support of LabView?
4. What is the symbolic link that was not created in the DAQmx installation report? (ln: create the symbolic link ' / usr/local/include/NIDAQmx.h': no such file or directory)?
I apologize for so many questions, but these seem to be the last obstacles to obtaining OR runs correctly on this system. Is there other information that we can provide that would be useful? Thanks for any help or suggestions you can offer.
Craig
Hey Craig,.
Given that you use 64-bit Linux all kernel modules must be compiled for 64 - bit. User mode binaries can be 32-bit, assuming that you have installed the 32-bit support libraries.
NOR-DAQmx is a complex architecture and requires several kernel modules to support your PCIe card. Most of these kernel modules have not been brought to support 64-bit Linux. Some kernel modules are components infrustructure that are shared with other pilots OR as NI-VISA and NOR-488. 2 and have been brought to support 64-bit Linux. Unfortunately, you need all the modules to use your hardware.
I hope that answers your question.

I tried viewing a presentation power point and got to page 2 and my computer crashed. Thought on... what he did previously trying to display a PPP file, but I thought that it was not my computer to the actual file. now I have my doubts and also this time an error message came that said... This problem occurred because your graphics card does not support the required version of DirectX. This version of Windows requires a DirectX 9.0 compatible video card or newer. can someone tell me what I should do next?
You left out which version of DirectX has been shown.
As far as I know, your Intel 945GM should support DirectX 9 and because you have XP sp3, you must have at least DirectX 9 installed.
I met the following, but it shouldn't apply to Powerpoint:
Some such as the Intel 945 GM Intel video cards have a design limitation which may cause problems when you try to run the Source Engine games. 3D graphics kernel does not support transformation of material, light and the vertex shader to similar technologies, which is an important part of the pipeline of 3D acceleration. Instead, this functionality is emulated in software that can reduce the compatibility and performance with 3D games.
I don't have a solution for you (assuming that DXDIAG, in fact, reports to have DirectX 9 or higher). You can see if you install a new driver support, but if it were me, I would be first contact Acer technical support or ask your question in another forum as one of the following conditions:
Intel graphics Forum: http://communities.intel.com/community/tech/graphics
Forum PowerPoint: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/powerpoint (select the corresponding forum for your version of Powerpoint). Include the results of DxDiag, including the version of DirectX. If there is something unusual about the image that causes the crash, include this info as well.Normally, for notebook/laptop computer, it is better to get the drivers of the mfr of computer rather than the manufacturer of the device.
Acer drivers for your computer are here: http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=535 (you want the Intel VGA for XP driver)
Intel has a newer driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Internet+Devices&ProductLine=Netbooks&ProductProduct=Mobile+Intel%C2%AE+945GM+Express+Chipset+Family

Did someone tried to get one of the OCZ revodrive SSD PCIe devices working on ESXi 4.1 technology? (e.g. ( http://www.Newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ene & DEPA = 0 & Order = BESTMATCH & Description = RevoDrive & x = 0 & y = 0) I've seen other people expressing similar feelings through google searches, but have never seen someone say they have tried and use successfully.
I know it does not exist in the HAL, but I wonder if someone took a chance and gave it a shot. I WOULD put one of them in my server to host my VMs who demand the best performance or FreeNAS allows to use this disk as a cache of read/write on a spinning media ZFS volume.
Similarly, no one knows if it's on the roadmap to be supported in a future version updated?
For search engines:
[OCZ RevoDrive OCZSSDPX-1RVD0050 PCI-Express x 4 50 GB PCI Express MLC internal Solid State Drive (SSD) | ] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227596 & cm_re=revodrive-_-20-227-596-_-Product | [View Details]
I'll be that person:
It does not in 4.1. You can operate it via some unsupported hacking and a driver in the Linux kernel does not support loading. Remember that this is really a software RAID, so you will end up with several small readers appearing in ESXi, rather than a single large disk, fast. I also had a problem with one of him disappearing from readers (probably a hardware failure, but it's still something to know for the record).

HP compaq 6730 s: SSDS for an 'old' Windows Vista laptop
Hello world
I'm doing a general upgrade to my old computer, which I use to work for the (somewhat cumbersome) analyses of data. I plan to increase my RAM memory of 8 GB (see post here) and now I'm wondering if the upgrade of my internal storage would change something.
Change my HARD for one SSD drive would be possible / advisable? Can what types of SSD I use in this model? Should I update my windows OS too?
I am currently running XP 32 bit (after downgrading from vista) alongside with Ubuntu 64-bit.
I think that Vista and Windows 7 are optimized for SSD (7 specially, as related here) so, probably, that I would need to go to W7 too?
Thanks sp much for your help!
Gonzalo
Vista is not optimized for one SSD in native mode. I recommend at least Windows 7 for one SSD. The current Linux kernels also have support SSD (active TRIM). You can install any 2.5 inches wide and 7 or 9.5 mm thick SATA SSD. My recommendation is a Samsung Evo 840 or 850 model. Avoid the MX100 Crucial he has caused a lot of problems reported here for reasons that have not yet been fully explained.

MacBook Pro glued on the filled during boot loading bar
My MacBook Pro (end of 2011; El Capitan 10.11.5) is recently become insensitive at the point of being unusable, so I decided to do a clean install, since I had to do one for a while anyway. Once I reinstalled El Capitan, I took my SSD (Samsung 840 EVO; 500 GB) out of the enclosure and put it back in my MacBook Pro, but it wouldn't boot. As a first step, it loaded so slowly that I decided to reset the NVRAM, who ends up helping just a little. The loading bar fills now halfway to the top with the usual speed, but after that, it takes a few minutes to complete. And once it is full, nothing happens. He remains on the Apple logo and the bar filled little matter how long wait.
I also put the 500 GB SSD with the clean install in an another MacBook (Late 2008) and it works fine, so the problem must be related to hardware, I just can't determine what exactly. I tried to do an AHT, but basic and extended trials got stuck shortly after and gave me no result. I had trouble with the kernel panics, so I suspect that something may be wrong with my RAM, as I exchanged the 4 GB to 16 GB just now. But before you go out and spend money on the new RAM, I wanted to know if maybe someone runs into this behavior before and knows exactly what's going on or if not how I understand what is wrong.
Almost all of the kernel panic seemed to happen every time I was using Photoshop or video in Safari streaming. I'll post an old report of kernel panic, but a problem with Time Machine has led to the removal of all my past, with the exception of the most recent backups. I hope someone can help me find another way to understand what is wrong.
Update: I just tried it on an other SSD (same model, 250 GB) which has been working well in my older MacBook and this time I get an error message as soon as the loading bar starts to fill to the top. It remains for a few seconds, then the MacBook stops and starts again; This continues in an endless loop. I have attached a picture below.
I really don't know how exactly to interpret this, but this looks like a kernel panic for me. What is my RAM after all? I appreciate any comment on that.
Connect the SSD to the external MBP via USB and see if it will start the MBP. If so, the internal SATA cable is suspect.
If you can get the MBP to start, then you can start to deal with panics of the kernel:

Also an EtreCheck report can be useful:

Ciao.

Hello everyone.
I have a MacBook air 13 "mid 2013. 5 days ago my mac started crashing everytime I close the screen without turning off it.
Once closed the screen, when I reopen it, I see the desktop with all the things I was doing for a while and then it stops and restarts automatically! It is very annoying. I tried everything I know. I formatted the mac using a version of El captain by USB. It solves nothing.
I can post the crash report. Close the display and re-open at 09:05:21 it.

Satellite R630-13F - bootable ISO need BIOS update
Hello
I have Ubuntu Linux on my R630-13F.
There is a known issue with Ubuntu & kernel 2.6.35 and freezing at startup, however the last BIOS 1.80 would have been remedied this. Currently I'm under 2.6.32 kernel to work around this problem, but I would like to upgrade. On the global site of Toshiba, the laptop computer sister, Portege R700 has updated the BIOS under various forms, including an ISO bootable. However, it seems here in the United Kingdom, the R630 has only a windows executable and the BIOS itself comes somewhere.
So, Toshiba can provide me with the format ISO bootable BIOS, or he will run to the breast, say a 'live CD' BartPE Windows XP? I suppose that the latter is preferable, if it works, because then Toshiba must not put any effort, but I don't know how the update process (if, for example, it must store the data on the hard disk and restart) because all you get is an exe file and no documentation.
Especially I don't want to go through the pain and the time to restore the laptop to windows 7, then re-restoration of Ubuntu.
Thank you very much!

How to install Win 7 on the second partition without erasing the Ubuntu?
Just do a dual boot ;)> So, Toshiba can provide me with the format ISO bootable BIOS, or he will run to the breast, say a 'live CD' BartPE Windows XP?
It s a friend of a user forum if you need an ISO bios so I ask an ASP in your country whoGood luck
