2 guests ESXI 4.1 + 1 SAN + how-to vmotion/ha.

Hi all

I just finished with the configuration of two hosts 4.1 esxi, vcenter, storage san; For now, I have a couple of virtual machines running on host 1 (virtual machines are stored on san, I activated with san multipathing LUNS are presented only to host 1 right now).

I want to activate vmotion & HA.

Basically, I want to be no interruption of service, as in, if a physical host switches the other Sockets. all of my virtual machines should be stored and managed the san.

What is the best practice approach?

Create a cluster? I then make my LUN for both esxi hosts? It is not yet clear. This new cluster has its own iscsi? I have to present LUNS to this new iscsi host?

Can you please advise with a pdf file or a walkthrough.

My vcenter's vmotion license and vmwareHA.

This is a good news

The fact that HA works means that you shared storage and the network configuration is identical on each host.

requires specific additional VMkernal and vMotion for vMotion

Thus, on each host vSwitch, you add a VMKernal and check the vMotion.

It takes an IP address for each VMKernal server and vMotion.

After installation make sure that guests can each other on this specific IP ping

Then vMotion option will be available.

Here is a video that will explain everything

  • VSAN guests can access the FC SAN storage at the same time?

Soon we will invest in new ESXi hosts and we want to design them for the ability to VSAN. But since VSAN is a fairly new technology, we also want the same hosts to act as our old guests and have warehouses of data in our SAN (FC SAN attached storage) environment.

Host VSANS have access to VSAN and FC SAN storage at the same time?

What advantages and disadvantages do you see with this design?

Yes, there is nothing to stop an ESXi participating both host a cluster VSAN, and also had access other storage taken in charge of protocols such as NFS, FC, FCoE or iSCSI.

However, you will not be able to use the LUNS or Volumes presented on NFS, FC, FCoE or iSCSI for storage VSAN.

VSAN requires local disks to build the VSAN data store.

I guess the only concern would be the additional management that comes with having many types of different storage, but this is true even if VSAN wasn't in the picture.

  • ESXi 5.5/Workstation 8, how to make my computer prompted with different CPU

    Hello gurus,

Let's start which is my goal. I need to create a virtual machine with different hardware (I have no problems with the HARD drive and RAM options). I need the CPU on the system invited to be Intel or SMA.

My host system is with Intel CPU and Intel part it I don't find any problem. But there the prompt with the SMA is the trickiest part. Does anyone know any thing or any software that can make this possible?

I also tried to build ESXi 5.5 as a guest on my workstation, but here I can't find how to (if possible at all) the CPU ADM.

PS Comments OS it is win2k3/8/12

    Thank you!

    Hello Asen,

You can abstract only that physically you have, so you can't emulate AMD CPUS on Intel CPU hardware.

For guest with AMD CPU instructions you must use physical server with the desired provider in your case with AMD processor installed server.

    Kind regards

  • HA - guests with local VMFS and SAN devices

I have 4 guests of u2 ESX VSphere DRS cluster and you want to enable HA.

The hosts have all VM on DAS and share SAN volumes.

The machine virtual on the DAS is non-critical test servers which will not need failover in the event of a host failure, but will the VM SAN.

    My question is:

How will the HA react in this environment? There are toggled it can (the basic VM SAN) and ignore the das servers?

Havn't had any material to spare to test now

    Thanks in advance

Exactly.  What can the failover is going.

  • Best practices for transportation of guests of storage Local to SAN

Our company has finally implemented a storage area network to take advantage of vMotion and HA. Does anyone have suggestions on how to spend 15 virtual machines guests with a total of 4 TB San with a minimum of effort and downtime? The way I see I have the following three options, but would like even though some entries:

    1) powering of each guest, manually move the files hard to the new data store. update parameters (not really a viable option)

    (2) use the vCenter Converter to move them to a new data store

    (3) use the option migrate from vCenter to move everyone to a new data store. I'm not sure I can use this option as vMotion is not yet on.

Yes - if you can wait for SVMotion, then it would be the ideal solution.  No downtime necessary!

  • relocation of esxi start from the san LUN

I have 1 SG by ESXi host and its start-up dedicated to san lun and other LUN datatore. IF I had to reinstall the host esxi via kickstart, do I need to unmask the LUNS of the SG data store before installing?

I used to do if Imaging is automated. If I do this since an ISO just be careful. That's what I do.

  • Learing ESXi 5... How to display the o/s on a workstation

    Hello world

Learn how to configure vmware server esxi 5.0 at home and everything is good so fare.

IV; e got 2 images loaded and running (SuSE Linux and a Windows 7)

I downloaded the vmware view client and installed on my Windows 7. iMac, iPad devices, but can not access the virtual machine installed.

Any guidance appreciated on how to access the VM to a workstation as if it were a regular "deskop. I installed the vmware vsphere client, and it works well.

    Thank you

VCenter server doesn't seem to have a trial/eval version, so I have to learn another way.

vCenter is available on a free trial. Proabably you can install ESXi environment first and then start with a view

  • ESXi 5.1 separating SAN traffic w / VLAN

So I learned this week that vSphere 5.1 VmKernels no longer support multiple gateways.  This causes me some confusion with how to properly configure my for my SAN.  I thought it was best practice to separate traffic, so I created VLANS separated for management and for data traffic (SAN).  Since they are in different subnets, they have their own front door.  When you try to configure it I started having a few problems before I realized that the gateway that must remain the same.  I contacted VMware and initially they said gateways may be changed before finally stating that they were incorrect and that there may be 1 door entry.  The answer I got on their part at this time there is that I don't in fact want to split the VLAN and leave the front door on my vmkernel for only san traffic they stated that both that my VLAN was correctly setup that vmware if you just know where to send data and it wouldn't matter.  When this 'magic' was not they told me I must have a problem of vlan and they couldn't help me.

Could someone give me an idea as to what the best method is to do this?  I found an article that says you can manually add a second gateway via the CLI, but when I tried I received an error message indicating that the route existed.

    VLAN 18 (172.27.18.x/24 w/gw 172.27.18.1) - management

    VLAN 40 (172.27.40.x/24 w/gw 172.27.40.1) - data/SAN

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Greg,.

    Here is an example of configuration using VSS;

-vSwitch0 = management is on VLAN130 (port, no VLAN ID configured access)

-vMotion = vSwitch1 is on VLAN131 (port, no VLAN ID configured access)

-vSwitch2 = IPStorage is on VLAN132 (access port, no configured VLAN ID) - L2 subnet gateway disabled

-vSwitch3 = comments Networking (ports of junction, tagging VLAN)

In this example, management and IPStorage be separated on different VLAN and for more security VLAN IPStorage has the gateway disabled (so traffic can be routed elsewhere).

From the storage point of view, simply presented in your storage space (NFS exports for example) on the same VLAN as your port IPStorage kernel VM (or VLAN132 in this example).

    See you soon,.

  • Take a snapshot of a lun SAN: How do I disassemble the virtual machine?

SAN is FC 9958E Hitachi, ESX 3.5 update 2.

I try to take a snapshot of a lun (with a virtual machine in this regard) san and must turn off the virtual machine and disassemble the VMFS virtual machine so I can do that there is no I/O will the lun when I take the snapshot.

How can I (of) a virtual machine of the VMFS without making the other virtual machines running in the same cluster? I know that the VMFS is a system of shared files grouped campaigns, exclusive property of vmware. Does anyone know the command to use?

If anyone has any info on this subject, it would be great.

This is the documentation is 1.5 ESX, released in 2002.

The command no longer exists in recent versions.

  • ESXi 4 Boot from SAN?

I heard that booting from the San with ESXi is supported with the 4.0, but someone tried?  I'm looking at a fervent IBM DS3200 SAS for a small deployment I work on and I wanted to check it works for others before that I have try.

    Mike

    Hi Mike,.

This works. You must configure SAN setting first in the BIOS. Then the Setup program will detect the LUN. other things are almost the same as the installation on a local hard drive.

  • Guest my account do not charge, how to fix?

When I turn on the account invited on my windows vista, a message appears that says: cannot load the account, sign out, then go to my account of Anwar Directors that works well.

    Hi ToonTimmer,

    ·         You did changes to the computer before this problem?

This problem may occur if system files associated with the guest account is missing or damaged.

I would like to create a new user account and check if that helps.

    Create a user account: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-vista/Create-a-user-account

If the problem does not occur in the new user account, you can transfer the files from the damaged to the new user account by using the article user account "difficulty a user profile is corrupted.

  • Collection of VM guests esxi newspapers

    Hello

I just thought I would ask though I doubt it's possible.

Is there a way to collect newspapers on the virtual machine to all the files of relevant journal on the ESXi node on which the virtual machine is running.  I'm not just referring to newspapers located with the virtual machine, but all the other newspapers, hostd,/messages...etc

I guess what im wanting a quick way to collect data on a virtual computer, so I can solve problems as they come upward instead of search.

I already have something like this just as a script, but I'm just curious...

    Thank you!!

If you want to collect messages and other vSphere newspapers use syslog.  vCenter 5 comes with a syslog collector program, or you can use something like Kiwi syslog.

Logs of comments is already stored on the VMFS data store, so no point their capture.

Is that what you are looking for?

  • ESXI free Version host failure - how to recover virtual machines?

    Hi all

I ran a VMWare lab at home with a free version of ESXI 4.1.

My server does not and I have to reset all the settings management of ESXI and I lost my virtual machines.

I solved the problem, but I lost the virtual machine.

When I navigate through the data store I can see the virtual hard disk for my servers.

Is there a way to recover these virtual machines?

I guess that I'm not the first to ask this question, so if you could point me to any page with some instruction, it would be great.

    Thanks in advance,

    Fabio

Welcome to the VMware forums communities.  In each folder of the virtual machine, you should see a VMX file for the virtual machine.  This is the configuration file.  Right-click on it and select Add to the inventory.  Then follow the instructions of the wizard and after the virtual machine market.  If your network configuration is the same as previously, then you should be good to go.

  • After you install Esxi, I don't know how I can install other modules as converter and Vcenter

I downloaded Esxi installable and installed without problem.

But after downloading the installer for other products, I can't boot from the cd...

I need to mount the cd with instructions for bsd?

    thx for your help

vCenter and other plugins to be installed on a physical Windows Server or machine virtual Windows Server.  I would recommend deploying a VM of Windows Server on your ESXi host and then mount the ISO for this virtual machine, install vCenter and then go from there.

If you have found this helpful at all prices please points using the correct or useful!  Thank you!

  • vSphere ESXi 4.0 Build 171294 how can I access my USB hard drive?

Is it possible to mount the USB hard drive with VM server with vSphere, ESXi 4.0? Thank you.

Your server must support Intel VT - d (IO done and this is not the same as VT (Virtualization Technology) x).   The only option would be USB over IP.
