2 physical CPU considered 4 CPU in ESXi

Hello

I had a problem on a UCS B200 M4 blade. the blade contains 2 physical CPU E5-2660 [email protected] (10 carrots each)

ESXi 5.5 u2 (with or without custom image cisco) installed successfully.

But ESXi 5.5 see 4 physical CPU with 5 cores of each instead of the 2 physical.

I have no idea why, maybe the bios features but do not know which?

Someone has an idea?

Thanks in advance.

Hello

Is the question on the community of cisco. It seems that the E5 v3 adds a new feature called COD (Cluster on Die).

Unfortunately this feature is not supported by VMware for now (even in u2 5.5).

It is possible to disable in the bios.

Thanks for your help.

    Hi all

    This is my first post in the forums and will gladly start to participate more now that I'm working a lot more with vmware products

    My question concerns the change of physical processors allowed for ESXi 6. If my memory doesn't fail me ESXi 5.5 has been licensed for 2 processors physical (we have two processors in our ms), and we started to update some of them to 6.0. Now, after having entered the ESXi license, we noticed a difference (large and small) in what he says that he has been approved for...

    VMware6License.jpg

    Someone please tell me they just made a mistake, because if they did, it's a step unhappy return in my opinion = / (and we will have to keep 5.5 on our servers)

    Thank you all!

    Kind regards

    Martin

    I just ran a quick test. I installed ESXi 6.0 with a single processor as a virtual machine and is joined with the license of the hypervisor. He showed "1 physical CPU" as a license. I then shut down the machine virtual and added a second processor. After starting the virtual machine, he showed "2 physical processors", as a license (as expected).

  • 1 physical CPU limitation

    Is it true that hypervisor free will support physical CPU 1 with unlimited cores?

    Actually, no point in adding an additional to a server physical CPU if you need to continue using the free version of the hypervisor.

    To increase the physical CPU at 2, I would need to buy VMware vSphere Essentials Kit?

    Although there is no limitation on the physical processors that would be free esxi, you can use server with any number of processors with any number of cores to deploy free vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi). But it supports only 32 GB of memory.

  • Win7x64 Home Premium does support double physical CPU (Xeon 3.4) with HT - to see only two graphics in the CPU monitor.

    I have a workstation Dell Precision 670 with dual Xeon 3.4 GHz CPU with Hyperthreading.  I installed Windows 7 x 64 home premium and now cannot see two processors/cores in the system monitors backed up by the release of Registry.  This means that two physical processors or hyperthreading is not supported by Home premium.  I didn't know that this referred to in one of the official literature I've read (and I thought that all the flavors supports two physical processors).  Can clarify you if it of Dual CPU support or lack of support of HT for my processor (I think they're Prescotts of memory).

    Here is the result of a record query, it seems to list the two physical processors and not virtual cores HT.

    (Turning things and disable in bios), I confirmed that I see in the Task Manager, msinfo and CUP-z 1 physical processor with 2 threads.  BUT in Device Manager I see all processors & carrots (4) and all report that they function normally.  So it seems to me there is a missing communication between the end user of things and what is seen in the Device Manager.  I tried the option in msconfig to force 2 CPUs, but that made no difference.

    You need Pro see two physical CPU slots, double or not.

  • Physical serial ports are supported in ESXi?

    Physical serial ports are supported in ESXi?  I install Windows 2008 SBS on a HP Proliant ML350 G6 ESXi (version of stick USB HP) running. The server comes with a serial port on board.  I was hoping that connect an external modem and expose it to the virtual server, Windows SBS 2008 to serve as a network fax.  Is this possible? Alternatives if not supported?

    It would be a no.

    There are TCP/IP USB devices, do not know if there are similar devices for the series, but NO physical devices, sound cards, usb, parallel, series can be transmitted to a virtual machine.  That's because ESX uses vmotion, and it was designed to let the virtual machine move between machines, so allowing physical connections so would interfere with this operation.

  • comparison of physical CPU and vCPU cores

    Hello

    I'm an admin of VMWare and recently asked by a customer in our Cloud Computing environment to add an extra vCPU to one of their virtual machines so that it aligned the physical counterpart that they had migrated away from more.  The physical version had 2 processors quad core (clocked at 1.4 Ghz) and the virtual version has now 2 vCPUs (The ESXI host a 2.4 Ghz CPU).  Since then, I've been asked how to compare the two and I am struggling to explain their project...

    The user connects to the physical computer and run the Task Manager and sees the 8 cores working away

    It then records in the virtual machine and see the two processors working away.  You can say that he thinks that the performance piling in ESXi...

    How to compare the two scenarios and how can I explain that is comparable in an ESXi environment - and is it really comparable?

    The way I see it, adding a second processor on the virtual computer which means provide 2 physical processors on the host are available, instructions can be performed on them by the customer, which means that 2 at the same time.

    On the physical server, the 8 cores can be used simultaeously then, how this can never be comparable?

    Or I have this completely wrong?  Performance and the remains has never been my strong point!

    Advice or answers on the above would be welcome

    Thank you

    Hello.

    Each vCPU is mapped to a logical processor, which is a physical on your host system kernel if you do not have active Hyperthreading.

    I don't like the physical to virtual comparison, but of course I know my clients.

    In most cases, the physical resources have never been effectively used, as the operating system or application running on the top was not able to use the 8 cores of the two processors for example four hearts in your example.

    So most of the time you can get the same performance with only 1 or 2 vCPUs after moving to virtualization.

    If you want to know more you can read the resource management Guide: http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-501-resource-management-guide.pdf

  • What is the difference between virtual and physical CPU cores?

    I understand one is virtual and the other is physical. My question is, if I run a physical system with two physical processors quadricoeurs, which would be an equivalent virtual machine configuration, assuming I use VMware on a dual CPU quad-core server?

    Would be - this 4 x vCPU or 8?

    Run perfmon to see what treatment power is actually using a period reasonable period (x days)...

    You generally assign virtual servers less vCPU than you should in physical cores before conversion, or building a VM... Where you had processors dual core quad now, the reality of things would be that it is really only with the power equivalent of two hearts (crete)...

    Beauty to go with a virtual server is that you can assign a n vCPU VM start (for example, two for a multi-thread aware or SMP, application server) and add later if the performance requires it. The majority of the VMS is built with one vCPU to start, unless you KNOW (beyond doubt) that demand on the server will need vCPU more and the software running in the VM actually fully benefit the granting of vCPU more to her... I have, in general, set the alarms I know where the application of the CPU is abnormally high (or above the normal threshold) on VM (email is sent)... This allows me to monitor the requests to the server and adjust it accordingly.

    You can also grant a greater share value VM for resources, so it has a higher priority than the other virtual machines when he needs these resources.

    Of course, there is much to be said for having a host server (for ESX/ESXi) who has enough power too... These days, I wouldn't recommend becomes a new server (for a production environment) with anything less than the Interior, dual Xeon 5620... Larger environments might require higher speed Xeon 56xx or maybe even 65xx or popular 75xx Xeon series with more cores per socket... This is a capacity adequate session/run planning would have come into play...

  • Share of CPU between ESXi hosts in a cluster?

    Is it possible to configure a cluster with a pool of CPU resources such as all CPUS of all ESXi hosts in the cluster are in the pool and if a virtual machine starts using more CPU that's current host has it can draw another ESXi host CPU to deal with?

    A virtual machine can use CPU only from the host where the virtual machine works... There is no way to allocate CPU of multiple hosts to a single virtual machine.

  • Level microcode CPU nested ESXi 6.0 error

    Hello the VMware community!  I've built a budget at home and execution 5.5 vSphere lab / vCenter node cluster 2.  I try to put in place an environment vSphere nested 6.0 for testing purposes and met with an immediate obstacle.

    My first step was to create a new virtual machine to a host 6.0.  I activated the option of cpu expose hardware assisted 'display' in the guest operating system and began to install the vSphere ESXi 6.0 on the virtual computer operating system.  Almost immediately, I was faced with the following error information:

    ~~~~~
    VMware ESXi 6.0.0 (VMKernel Release Build 2494585)
    The system has found a problem on your machine and cannot continue.
    Not supported microcode level 0x00000000
    Please use the microcode patch level 0 x 01000065 or higher with processors AMD family 10 h B3.
    ~~~~~

    I did some google-foo and it seems that what which either update the installation of operating system try to use cannot be done from a guest operating system...  So it would seem the OS must be installed directly on the host computer before guests 6.0 work.  Another summer in this way, anyone?  Am I close?

    Hello world.  Thought I would let you know how I managed to solve this problem.  The credit goes to this external blog post:

  • 8 physical CPU cores - how can I use all cores effectively?

    I have a couple of servers Dell PowerEdge 6950.  Each server has 4 sockets to dual core for a total of 8 physical cores.  I will be the host of many servers Windows 2003 server and 2008 Standard edition.

    If I set each virtual machine to use a single virtual processor, this just drop a load on a carrot and let others 7 carrots wasted, or it covers the single virtual processor between all eight physical cores load?

    One of my virtual machines will be host to a MySQL database using a fairly heavy CPU load and I want to exploit the full potential of my servers.

    Thank you

    the vmkernel Scheduler will cover all UC hence it will be used effectively.

  • Distribution of load among the groups, only one thread limited to physical CPU (& memory)?

    I was not able to discern, documentation, I read so well how the load of a virtual machine is distributed should the load exceeds the limits of one CPU heart.

    At what level is the distributed load between the physical processors cores and especially between physical servers?

    At the level of the Virtual Machines,

    At the level of the process.

    At the level of the threads, or

    Somehow secondary thread?

    I'll ask another way; the ESX provides virtual processors that exceed the capacity of the hearts of single-processor or single servers, which also has the ability to run a single thread that consumes the entire capacity of the virtual processor?

    Can someone point me in the right direction?

    There is good documentation for this issue?

    AiwarikiaR-

    I don't think that it is wrong, unless you only have 1 VM.

    If you have more 1VM, with the processors maintain will almost always help them performance.

  • 10 ColdFusion does not seem to use all 8 cores (2 physical cpu on physical hardware)

    I have a time hard to believe that we write this incredibly excellent code to have more than 100 users never do our server over 25% spike...

    How can I check to see how many CPU is using ColdFusion or the number of processors it will use?

    Thank you!

    One of the ways of loading CF with use is to use Apache JMeter. Reference:
    https://JMeter.Apache.org/

    Briefly. In Jmeter to Test Plan, add Threads (users) then thread group.
    In the Group of threads add Sampler HTTP Request.
    Inside the Group of threads increases the number of Threads 1 to 30 of say.
    Change the HTTP request to include the server name or IP of FC
    Port 80 or 8500 for example function built in CF webserver or IIS / Apache.
    Path to the CFM file your going to use it.
