A video that I shot is pixelated and fuzzy. I think I have the wrong codec.

I shot images on a camera decent (not HD) - a Canon Vixia HFM30, it must have a decent image quality. I saw the regular difference between HD and video footage, but it's horrible. It was exported on a Mac on iMovie, then transferred to my Mac Book Pro. I tried to do some research online; He pointed toward the download or purchase the appropriate codec. Reading an article on Apple's site, it says to go to > Finder, then file, then > news > name and Extension to find the used extension. I don't see any extension. I know what they were referring.
