  Hey all, I met several times before - bit of a design on a flaw in Microsoft if you ask me.  If that's what I think is, you set all files with the extension ".lnk" to start with vlc.exe (or another program).  In short, here's what you need to do, but be careful in the registry.

  Do exactly what the instructions, exactly how they say to do it, and if something seems wrong, get the help of a technician or someone more experienced.  Make a mistake in the registry can make your system unbootable more or less well.

  1. Click on theStart Menu, typeregedit in start search and pressENTER .
  2. Navigate to the following registry branch:

  NtVersion ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\ [ext]

  Replace the [ext] with the real extension of the file you want to restore the file type association to return to the original Windows 7 by default (probably .lnk). If you unsure, simply browse through all the Sub-touche under FileExts .

  1. Delete the subkey namedUserChoice .
  2. Exit the registry editor.

  Recently changed the Windows 7 default to another theme that I created using my own images.  For example, theme custom 15 images Fund rotation every 10 minutes.  It is the only change I am aware to the theme.  After that, I noticed that all my default icons for applications have disappeared.  Example, Word 2007 icon appears next to a .doc file.  Now, it shows only the icon for unknown elements.  He always knows the default application, just not the icon normally.  It is a problem now with all the files on my computer.  I prefer to see the default icons instead of disable "Hide extensions of known file types".

  I even went back to the theme by default in Windows 7 (and other) and the problem persists.

  Ok.. I'm totally guessing here, but try:

  Go in run (Windows key + R) and type
  %windir%\system32\Control.exe/name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms

  Now, select the desktop and then "Set this program by default."

  If this does not work, right click on computer and select "Properties".  Then choose 'Advanced system settings', then 'Performance '.  Make sure 'Show thumbnails instead of icons' is checked.

  Finally, if this still doesn't work, then go in run and type
  \AppData\Local C:\Users\[user name]

  Where [username] is the name of your current user account.  Then, click on "Organize" and then "folder and search options."  Then click on the 'View' tab and select to 'See the hidden files.'  After that is done, a file named IconCache should appear.  Remove the suction cup and reboot!

  NVIDIA is a manufacturer of motherboard chipsets and video cards. Your problem is probably related to the latter. If you see an error message mentioning Nvidia, please report it returns with the exact phrase.

• My desktop icons have a white rectangular box with the logo of Internet Explorer inside on the name of the program. Cannot change icon images.

  Most of my icons have the logo explore inside a small box, but stills has any name on the devices of the logo program. I tried to change in properties but it will not change.

  Fixed it myself. Able to run for each research program and then was able to restore it in a few days.
