  I corrected by running Windows update and got the above error. For a little history, I am running this windows on an IMAC in a Bootcamp partition. I was trying to run Parallels for Mac OS and that's when the problems started. I look at my computer properties and note that the State of Activation of Windows is not available and the product ID is not available. I tried Windows Activation and it lets me know error code is 0xD000034. I don't have a lot of items installed in Windows 7, but if resettlement would not be a huge problem, but if there are solutions out there that would save me some time.

  I took my laptop Acer in a shop repair to fix a broken power button and since then Windows 8 has been asking me to activate. I don't know how it happened as the repair guy was not supposed to make software changes and as far as I know he didn't.
  Now, I am unable to apply the updates to windows on my laptop.

  From what I have learned, this problem is caused by a problem with the software protection service.
  When I check the status of the Software Protection service, it does NOT work and when I try to start it manually I get "error 5: access is denied."

  I tried the SFC/SCANNOW command. and he reports new for me that all is well.
  I changed around some permissions on drive C, make sure that my user name is listed as the owner and I still get the same error.
  I have reset Windows 8 by default using the method to clean it thoroughly and I STILL get the same error.

  I'm losing my mind here! I know there are some wizards real tech here and I really hope for more help. Thank you again for your time...

  If you mean that you can not activate automatically, try to do it manually:

  To activate manually, go to start, search, and type in slui 4 enter.  Enter your country and press Next.  You will be on a screen with a phone number and a bunch of codes below.  Dial the number and browse automatic guests until you get to a human being.  Have your handy product code because it will be asked.  Explain the situation, but it's the same PC and only installed on this PC.  They should give you a code to enter on this screen to activate Vista.
