Add a layer mask

Hello

I came across this thread in the forum of items https://forums.adobe.com/thread/798304 and had the same question for the CC PS (I don't have the elements to see if this suggestion works there). I tried to add a selection to the layer mask to my pressing Shift/Ctrl and clicking on the thumbnail of the mask, but it does not work (the result has been to deselect the new selection and simply load the mask selection). Other/different way could there be to do?

Thank you

-David

What operating system do you use?

The same procedure, spoken in the post that you linked to should also work in photoshop cc

But it probably really can't load the existing layer mask selection.

After that you have the choice, you want to add to the layer mask, simply target the layer mask (click on the thumbnail of the layer mask to make it active), and then fill the selection with black or white.

  • Script to add the layer mask to all layers but the background?

    I have been a professional editor/Retoucher for photographers for the past three years. I use a lot of stock, but I've never branched in scripts so far. I am trying to refine my workflow and scripts to not appear to be the next logical step.

    I do a lot of work in the interiors, which is essentially manual HDR. Here's my current generation process, which I would love to find a way to script. I tried to be very clear, but let me know if it needs to expand. I use Photoshop CS5.

    1. pull brackets, color corrected TIFF in Bridge.

    2 re-order as needed, with the main exhibition downstairs. Click on 'Tools' > 'Photoshop' > 'Charge in the form of layers Photoshop"to get a PSD with layers in the correct order and main as exposure layer from bottom (base).

    3. manually go through each layer and add a layer mask hide all each layer except the background layer.

    4. Save as a PSD, using the original name of the background layer as the file name. To do this, I just copy the name of the layer (example.tiff), paste in the Save dialog box and then use the drop-down menu to select PSD (save as example.psd).

    I hope to automate steps 3 and 4 as they are the majority of your time for me. Any contribution is appreciated!

    Thanks again.

    Yes, your change is good.  This way the last layer will not have a mask applied.  I wasn't sure if you wanted that, but in the control for the background layer.

    Regarding the economy, what file format would you save on?  Here's how to save a psd:

    docRef var = activeDocument

    var doneFolder = new Folder('/c/photos/')

    var NomCouche = docRef.activeLayer.name

    var psdOptions = new PhotoshopSaveOptions();

    psdOptions.layers = true;

    app.displayDialogs = DialogModes.ALL;//include this line if you want that the coming dialog box.

    docRef.saveAs (new file (doneFolder + "/" + NomCouche + ".psd"), psdOptions);

    app.displayDialogs = DialogModes.NO;//Resets at ALL - you won't let it work on.

  • 'Add a layer mask "command.

    Hello

    Anyone know if there is a command 'add a layer mask "?  I've searched high and low and can't find it.  I could do an action assumes, but I thought I might ask the experts.

    Thank you.

    Just add a button in the menu photostops LAYER / LAYER MASK / REVEAL ALL or HIDE ALL if function

    you want a new white or black mask.

  • How to add a layer mask?

    It may be simple, but it seems confusing, please I need help

    Assuming that the variable myLayer is a layer object, the collection of all its masks is: myLayer.property ("ADBE Mask Parade");

    and his children are the groups of actual masks (which can be renamed). To add a mask to the collection, you do:

    var myMask = myLayer.property("ADBE Mask Parade").addProperty("ADBE Mask Atom");

    You can define the name, color, attributes of Rotobezier etc. (optional):

    myMask.name = "My mask";
    myMask.color = [1,0,0];
    myMask.rotoBezier = false;
    myMask.maskMode = MaskMode.ADD;

    To set its keyframable properties: property maskPath has special propertyType (SHAPE).

    You must create a Shape() object like this before you set the value:

    var myShape = new Shape();
    // set the vertices (coordinates of the vertices in layer coordinates, not comp)
    // + the inTangents (coordinates of the incoming Bezier handles with respect to the the corresponding vertices)
    // + the outTangents (coordinates of the outcoming Bezier handles with respect to the the corresponding vertices)
    // + the closed attributes
    var w = myLayer.width, h = myLayer.height;
    myShape.vertices = [[w/2, 0], [w,h], [0,h]];            // here: array of 3 "points"
    myShape.inTangents = [[0, 0], [0, 0], [0, 0]];        // array of 3 "vectors"
    myShape.outTangents = [[0, 0], [0, 0], [0, 0]];        // array of 3 "vectors"
    myShape.closed = true;
    // now set the value:
    myMask.property("ADBE Mask Path").setValue(myShape);

    In this example, all the tangents are 0 which gives a straight contour mask.

    Unless you have your loan of shape data, insert more complex values of the tangents is not so much straighforward.

    My normal layer mask does not work correctly.  When I click on add a layer mask, I get this instead.  I change a setting by chance?  He won't let me see where my traditional black and white mask.

  • Can I use more than 1 layer in a single layer mask?

    Hi all!

    I am a beginner in Photoshop, so everything I do to this tent to complete the tutorials.

    At a given time of the lesson I started today, mentions of the description that I must make a selection in the left part of the image, add a layer mask and press Ctrl + Backspace to make the selection disappears. I did it, no problem.

    The next step is to do the same in the upper part of the image.

    My problem is that I already have an active layer mask and I can't repeat the same steps because I am not allowed by the program to create a second in the same layer.

    What Miss me?

    Its very easy really and you do not need more of a mask. The author would probably include a photo of the layers palette for orientation.

    I have not used a path to create the edges of the pieces of the puzzle here, but the principle is exactly the same.

    Hope that helps

  • I want to see the layer mask instead of the thumbnail of the layer mask in the layers palette.

    I don't see a thumbnail of the mask layer instead of the layer mask itself when I add a layer mask to the CS6.  How can I change this so the layer mask

    appear in the layers palette?

    Thank you

    Marc

    From what I remember of the CS6, it's the same CC follow these steps: in the layers palette, click on Panel options

    Click on the larger thumbnail

    The layer mask should now be big enough to see. Otherwise, you need to display it on the screen by alt clicking on

    on a PC option by clicking on the layer mask on a Mac

  • In RGB mode, why paste 50% gray in a layer mask actually put K 59% in the mask?

    Create a new (small) document in RGB mode, 8-bit, transparent background.

    Fill the layer 1, resulting with 50% gray, 100% opacity.  The reports = (128,128,128) RGB eyedropper.

    Copy the layer to the Clipboard.

    Create a new layer 2. Fill it with green #00ff00 (content doesn't really count).

    Add a layer mask to the layer 2.

    Wear this mask during installation.

    Paste the contents of the Clipboard.  The pipette noted the content of the mask as K 59%.

    I expect 50% gray (or K 50%). Why have I not 59% K?

    Additives:

    I'm using CS3 on Mac. I didn't get to see if the same thing happens with newer versions of PS.

    Apply the layer mask in the layer 2. Excerpt from the transparency in a new layer.  The pipette gives the RGB of the

    new layer as (106,106,106), with pixel-by-pixel variations plus/minus 1.

    Take the difference between this new layer and layer 1; the pipette gives the RGB difference as (22,22,22),

    Once again with variations of plus/minus 1.

    Paste the contents of the Clipboard into a new layer.  The pipette gives this new RGB content

    layer as (128,128,128), both without and with a black & white adjustment applied.

    Create a new layer, add a layer mask, fill the mask with 50% gray. The pipette gives the content of

    the new title (128,128,128) (now as expected) master.

    The 50% gray used above is just for simplicity. I am really interested in inserting a complicated RGB

    image containing only shades of gray in the layer mask. This example shows that the collage will not

    preserve the levels of gray. Indeed, when I replace the first 50% of grey with a black and white gradient.

    the differences between the initial gradient and in the mask included roughly quadratic between 0 to 0,

    22 128 and 0 to 255.

    It is a grayscale image, interpreted according to your work of gray.

    Use Gray Gamma 2.2 and you will get 50%.

    EDIT: actually I think you could use sGray, who has the accurate sRGB transfer function - which is not strictly a pure gamma. But it wouldn't be right with for example Adobe RGB.

  • stubborn layer masks

    Hello geniuses. I think I accidentally changed something in photoshop (cc) and now I seem to be stuck with vector masks. You can add a layer mask to the other layers of filter, right? If I add a layer of color, I should be able to add a layer mask - I am sure that I did a few weeks ago on another file? But this time I can get a vector mask. The icon at the bottom of my window of layers is the vector and is greyed out from under layers menu top layer mask. I did a quick search on google and it said the Brush tool for layer masks and pen tool for vector masks, but I am certainly on the Brush tool then why doesn't it let me have a layer mask? What Miss me? What else can I try please?

    Sorry for the misunderstanding Silkrooster. I know where you are coming-it will only process the instructions proposed then I must say it "deal with this path" somewhere.

    And you were right.

    I made you a screengrab but trying to recreate the issue, I think I found the answer. The layer mask option passes to the vector mask if you press and hold down command. I have to have my thumb on this subject - I can't imagine why - habit perhaps? I think that's my answer. Thanks for helping me out.

  • How to copy a channel alpha to an adjustment layer mask?

    I can copy a mask in alpha channel to a layer of the image by Ctrl + click on the alpha channel, then by clicking on the icon Add a layer mask in Photoshop CC, but it does not work for an adjustment layer. How can I copy the mask to alpha channel to the layer of an adjustment layer mask? Thank you.

    Drag the Alpha channel down to the channel to load as a selection symbol.

    Return the Panel layers, click the adjustment layer and choose an adjustment layer.

    The Alp\ha channel is displayed in his mask.

  • How to view the alpha channel of the layer mask in the layers palette?

    Help out me people CIHI...
    CS5 using - in the past, when I added a layer to a layer mask, it would appear in the palette as the alpha channel, which was very convenient. Now, when I add a layer mask, it appears only as the icon of mask; that is, square gray with a white circle in the middle. I have no idea what I did to go from one to the other, but I'd like to return the alpha representation!

    TIA,

    Toby

    Looks like you have set the layers panel to "no thumbnails. Right-click on a layer thumbnail (not a mask thumbnail) other than the bottom to see the thumbnails options.

  • Help! White paint or brush tool on layer mask work suddenly

    I worked with almost all the versions on Photoshop for many years.  Not an expert but with continued several years of experience.  All of a sudden, something happened which led to my being more able to work with pictures in PS5 until it is resolved...

    PS5 / Windows 7 / 64-bit

    As long as photographer frame of my work with images more often is to work in layers.  Create a duplicate layer.  Changes to this layer.  Add the layer mask to this layer.  Use the tool brush to paint in which changes to the duplicate layer will be exposed and see what parts of the lower layer.

    To do this the black square on the toolbar is on top for "paint"and let the lower layer to be seen.»  The oppisite white color square is used on top to cover a lower layer so that the top layer is observed.

    All of a sudden, I guess I touched or pressed something I don't have, I can no longer use the white or cover the tip of the tool.  Once I expose all or part of the bottom layer, I'm not able to re - cover all or part of this layer again.  When I go to strictly colors 'paint', I can now also no longer to paint with white color.  All other colors works but not white.

    Thanks in advance because I'm totally oyut business until it is resolved.

    Bruce

    Please check that it has not corrected the problem.  A multiply by White yields without change, which explains exactly what you saw.

    Also make sure that you have not a selection, because you won't be able to paint outside a selection.

  • A shadow scope-missing 'layer mask hides effects' of discoloration in CS5

    I'm using CS5.  I want to create a shadow of discoloration on a form/box. See the image attached below.

    In Photoshop, it's easy by:

    (1) create a form
    (2) add the layer mask to the shape layer
    3) click on gradient, gradient to increase the value and the value gradient color black white
    (4) gradient drag where you want on the form.  The shadow will bleed actually through the form and not only on the edges, which is not wanted.
    (5) open the layer styles, under Merge Options, select mask the layer mask effects and it will get rid of the shadow appears in the middle of the form and you'll end up with drop shadow perfect, faded around the edges (see below for finished product).

    Fireworks is missing from step 5.  There is no blending Options and there is no effect of mask mask layer.   Or if there is, I have not found. I'm using CS5.  Any ideas how to do this in Fireworks?

    fading-drop-shadow.jpg

    Clone of the form. Change the color of the clone of gray, and in the properties panel, change its type of edge to the pen.  With the clone still selected, choose commands > Creative > Auto vector mask. Select the type of mask down, left by clicking on its image and then apply it. In the layers panel, click the new group of mask to select. Click on the subject of black mask on the right of the two objects related to operate the gradient adjustment handle. Shorten and rotate the gradient until you get the desired effect.
