Help! White paint or brush tool on layer mask work suddenly

I worked with almost all the versions on Photoshop for many years.  Not an expert but with continued several years of experience.  All of a sudden, something happened which led to my being more able to work with pictures in PS5 until it is resolved...

PS5 / Windows 7 / 64-bit

As long as photographer frame of my work with images more often is to work in layers.  Create a duplicate layer.  Changes to this layer.  Add the layer mask to this layer.  Use the tool brush to paint in which changes to the duplicate layer will be exposed and see what parts of the lower layer.

To do this the black square on the toolbar is on top for "paint"and let the lower layer to be seen.»  The oppisite white color square is used on top to cover a lower layer so that the top layer is observed.

All of a sudden, I guess I touched or pressed something I don't have, I can no longer use the white or cover the tip of the tool.  Once I expose all or part of the bottom layer, I'm not able to re - cover all or part of this layer again.  When I go to strictly colors 'paint', I can now also no longer to paint with white color.  All other colors works but not white.

Thanks in advance because I'm totally oyut business until it is resolved.

Bruce

Please check that it has not corrected the problem.  A multiply by White yields without change, which explains exactly what you saw.

Also make sure that you have not a selection, because you won't be able to paint outside a selection.

  • Shift-click to create straight lines with the Brush tool is no longer works in 2015 CC

    Hello!

I feel a maddening thing I can't explain, maybe a bug or a dark environment?

If I use the pencil tool, I can click on the same spot on the canvas, then releases, then hold SHIFT key and click in another location on the canvas to create a straight line between the two points. This is expected behavior, and Photoshop has done this for years, as long as I can remember.

Until recently, the same has worked with the Brush tool. Since the upgrade to 2015 CC, however, shift-click on demand exactly as if I was clicking simply - he draws another full brush, but without a straight line connecting the two clicks. Weird.

Everyone knows the same behavior? (CC and Yosemite are completely up to date.)

If you click color, and then click on the sliders in grayscale. You will see if your black is 100%. Which fixed the problem on my end. thanks for all the advice.

  • stubborn layer masks

Hello geniuses. I think I accidentally changed something in photoshop (cc) and now I seem to be stuck with vector masks. You can add a layer mask to the other layers of filter, right? If I add a layer of color, I should be able to add a layer mask - I am sure that I did a few weeks ago on another file? But this time I can get a vector mask. The icon at the bottom of my window of layers is the vector and is greyed out from under layers menu top layer mask. I did a quick search on google and it said the Brush tool for layer masks and pen tool for vector masks, but I am certainly on the Brush tool then why doesn't it let me have a layer mask? What Miss me? What else can I try please?

Sorry for the misunderstanding Silkrooster. I know where you are coming-it will only process the instructions proposed then I must say it "deal with this path" somewhere.

    And you were right.

I made you a screengrab but trying to recreate the issue, I think I found the answer. The layer mask option passes to the vector mask if you press and hold down command. I have to have my thumb on this subject - I can't imagine why - habit perhaps? I think that's my answer. Thanks for helping me out.

  • Layer Mask question, please help.

    Hello

My layer mask does not work, do not know what is happening. I use 4 CS. I want to use the blend effect so I put the photos on a white background. I click on the layer mask on each photo, select the tool brush on the picture but does not work, is either appear black or white when I use the brush paint on it. So not bad, the foreground color should be gray & white based on layer mask, but it appears black & white instead. Please see the screenshot below. Please help, thanks

    Untitled-2.jpg

Hi, I'm going to try explain your problem.

In your posted example we see that you have three layers in the layers panel.

On each layer, we can see, on the left side, there is the thumbnail of the layer, it is a display of the actual image of your layer, then a thumbnail of the layer mask (the white rectangle on the right side).

A layer mask works as follows: you tell Photoshop to show or hide the actual parts (pixels) of the layer with the grayscale values. Indicates a white pixel on the layer masks Photoshop to display the area of the image with a (non-transparent) full opacity, while tells a black pixel on the Photoshop layer mask to hide the layer completely (0% opacity.) Gray values will therefore partially show the image data.

But you paint on the document, and you must specify Photoshop if you want to paint on the image (what you did in your example, and you don't want to) or if you want to paint on the layer mask (what you want to do). This indication is called targeting. It is simply done by clicking on the thumbnail of the layer or the layer of your layer mask thumbnail. (By clicking on different areas of a layer in the palette layers are different orders, you give to the program). For example, if you want to move the layer that you hide to another, in order to paint on his mask, sure to click on the layer of the other layer mask thumbnail in the layers panel.

In Photoshop CS5.5 and earlier versions, you'll see that a layer or its mask is targeted because there will be three contours around her: a black, a white and a black once again, as the actual layer data in the highlight 0928 your image layer. You should see these three contours around the layer mask to paint over it.

CS6 the target indicator is different, look in my image, we can see that the layer mask is targeted with white corners: I then have the part of the black layer mask by targeting the layer mask in the layer panel and then paint on the image where I want to hide the layer.

If you want to change the layer (photos, in your case), just click on the thumbnail, and you're ready to go!

    I hope this helps.

  • White color on the layer mask does not

Well, I have a problem... Each setting is fine, but when I open the layer mask on a layer, and if I have the black brush, it works very well, BUT if I brush white, it does not work. It's like the color white is on 0% opacity. It shows me an action in "history, but it's like I'm not even brushing."
Now, when I want white brush, I switched layer mask, brush black and then I reverse again, because as I said, the white color just doesn't work...
-Colours btw, work not in a layer mask

Is the Mode in the Options bar to brush on something other than normal?

  • Eraser tool does not work for the black layer mask

I'm trying to put a black layer mask and use Eraser tool to change.  Unfortunately the Eraser tool does not.  I'm not knowingly do anything differently that I did in the past.  Recently, I did a round of software updates for CS6.  I was wondering if anyone else is experienceing this and if there is a solution?

Verify that the in the Toolbox foreground color is set to black. (in front of when using the Brush tool)

Press D, and then press the X key.

And opacity and flow are 100%.

Most people use the brush on the layer masks and you might find that works better.

  • POLL: Blend mode options in the Brush tool?

layers.pngIt is a survey question for users of all versions of fireworks. In Fireworks 8, I noticed a difference in the properties of the Brush tool depending on whether the selection is an object or mask - in particular, the blend mode options do NOT appear in the property inspector when a bitmap mask is selected, * except * the object was chosen in the first place, as well as the Brush tool.

Please try the steps below and let me know the results:

    1. From the pointer tool, select a mask bitmap image (by selecting its thumbnail in the layers panel) and choose the Brush tool.
The blending mode menu in the property inspector?
    2. Now, with the still active brush tool, select the thumbnail of the object being masked.
The blending mode menu in the property inspector?
    3. Now, select the pointer tool and then re - select the Brush tool.
The blending mode menu in the property inspector?
    4. Finally, select the mask, with the still active brush tool again.
The blending mode menu in the property inspector?

In Fireworks 8 (on Mac OS 10.6.8), the answers to the above questions are, "no, no, Yes, Yes." So it is possible to use the blending mode of the options with the Brush tool when you are working with a mask bitmap image, but it's a complicated process to get these options appear. I'm interested to know if future versions of fireworks exhibit the same behavior. Anyone with a different version, please chime.

UPDATE: I still would like to hear from users of Fireworks CS3, CS4and CS5, CS5.5 on this issue! Please take a moment to help. All it takes is a Fireworks document with a bitmap object and a mask (not vector). Don't forget to indicate which version of Fireworks you are using.

Using Fireworks CS5 on Win 7, same results:

    1 NO.

    2 NO.

    3. Yes

    4. Yes, it still seems to work as expected with multiply that blendmode

Maybe the blendmodes are disabled simply because they are not that useful on a mask bitmap?

  • Posterization layer masks

I'm having a problem in Photoshop CS6 where I get the Posterization in a layer mask instead of a smooth gradient / transition. I'm 87% sure that translates a difficult transition that is visible in the final image (a TIFF image, not a jpeg).

I tried to apply a Gaussian to the mask blur, but this changes just the Posterization, is not to remove it. Do the Gaussian blur with the document in 16-bit mode makes no difference.

The Posterization is visible at all zoom levels. I tried setting the cache to 1 GPU based acceleration (and restart PS) levels, but still see the Posterization when you use a soft brush on a layer mask.

I read some of the other threads on the forum where people had problems with their graphics cards / monitor causing things to look at profiles Posterization when they weren't really. The examples in these threads seemed OK to me, so I think it's a Photoshop related problem rather than a general problem for me. I have attached two screenshots below, I hope that you can open them full size and see if they appear posterized to you.

I don't know what the problem is or how to fix it?

    Thank you

    gaussian-blur.png

16-bit mode for editing will reduce the introduction of banding, and if you finally convert 8-bit then Photoshop will dither the result. Dithering is enabled by default, I think, and it's in edition > color settings.

You need a graphics card with 10 bits per channel (30 bits) output (via the DisplayPort connection, I think) and a monitor that displays 10 PCB to reduce the display of bands that you disturb. I don't know the current state of management of Photoshop for 10 PCB display or what equipment is recommended. A search of forum for "10-bit" or "30-bit" can get you some information about this.
