Add existing ESX without formatting data warehouses

Hi all, I am new to scripting, trying to find a script that adds disks to host ESX just as we do on vcenter.

Rescan Disks - storage add - select disk/Lun - naa ID is known - Keep existing signature - finishing

Scenario is that: I have 50 + replicated discs that I have to import the site of recovery with a known naa.ids

Lun ID as below:

Disk Fibre Channel (naa.500506680180831a8000000000000505): 1

Disk Fibre Channel (naa.400503480180821a8000000000000502): 1

Disk Fibre Channel (naa.300503380180811a8000000000000511): 1

Disk Fibre Channel (naa.200502280180851a8000000000000435): 1

...

..

Let's say I have 2 ESX hosts nonclustered.

ESX1 and ESX2

How do you want to add these 50 disks to the ESX host with a powercli script?

I'm working on this problem awhile, but could not find a satisfactory answer.

PS: Keep existing signature is not a must, could be assigned a new signature. All I need is not for formatting the disk cause there no are data inside.

Thank you...

It's what

$esxcli.storage.filesystem.mount

allows you to do.

Take a look at Management VMFS volumes

You can do the same thing, with the same settings, with the Get-EsxCli cmdlet

  • can I reinstall ESXi 3.5 (u4) safely (without losing data warehouses)

    Good evening

I use VMware Workstation for awhile but I'm pretty new in the world of Infrastructure. I'm trying to prove some things on a whitebox House before making a proposal to work. Thus, everything that follows describes my staff, from the production environment, no company

In order to do things according to the needs, I'm juggling with live data between an old linux server, the new ESX host and my personal workstation.

I installed ESXi 3.5u4 on the new host and things work perfectly. I p2v had the old server linux (with all its data) and it is solid as a rock. Life is happy.

I now try to trap a promise 300tx4 and hotswap attached box from the old server and move them to the new server.  I am aware that it's not supported hardware, but I am struck the problem described here: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/186240

I would like, before continuing a HCL card, try reinstalling under 3.5iu2. Otherwise, I would try disabling my onboard Controller (nForce) and just use the promise card.

Since installing ESXi nukes the reader target, I know I'm losing this data store. Is there a way to preserve my other data warehouses, however? They remain available for addition/re-registration under the new facility? I have all supported and in security, but LeRiz, it would be REALLY annoying to have to rebuild that.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions,

    DC

    Hello

Yes, he should be all right.

Make sure you just for the re - install that you keep the previous VMFS, otherwise you will lose your VM.

  • Add several drives on different data warehouses

Hi all, I'm new to the script. I'm trying to script adding disks to different stores of data on different hosts (not clustered). Let's say I have VMs called VM1 and VM2 I get this info from file adddisk.txt. I want to add disks to the virtual machines, but I don't know the name of the data under specific host store. If VM1 is Host1, under name of data store is: Datastore1 IF VM2 is under Host2, name of data store is: Datastore2 so, how can I add records to several virtual machines without knowing the name of the data store? $servers is a get-Content "C:\Scripts\AddDisk\adddisk.txt" New-disk hard - VM $servers - CapacityGB 30 - DiskType Flat - data store 'DatasoreName' StorageFormat - thin thanks in advance.

    Try like this

    Get-Contentt c:\Script\adddisk.txt | %{  $hostname = Get-VM -Name $_ | Get-VMHost | Select -ExpandProperty Name  if($hostname -eq "esx3"){    $dsname = "Datastore3"  }  elseif($hostname -eq "esx4"){    $dsname = "Datastore4"  }  New-HardDisk -VM $_ -CapacityGB 5 -DiskType Flat -Datastore $dsname -StorageFormat Thin}

The Get-Content will read the file line by line.

We execute the codeblock to each line (construction ForEach - alias is %)

Essay on equality of strings is done with the operator - eq, the = operator is used only for assignments.

  • Formatted VMFS3 ISCSI data warehouses are compatible with ESX5.5?

    Hi all

I'm currently building an ESX 5.5 environment to run in parallel with my environment 4.1 existing and need the new 5.5 ESX servers to connect via iSCSI to a couple of VMFS3 formatted lun.

I can't see them via the iSCSI storage adapter, but when I try to mount it asks me to format first. I wanted to confirm if anyone else had this problem or has confirmed that VMFS3 is fully compatible with ESX 5.5 connected via iSCSI.

    Thanks in advance.

Looks like that the MTU on my NICs is set too high. Once I lowered around 1500, they began to present correct data warehouses.

Thanks for the help, I think I have a handle on it.

    Thank you, MP.

  • Move LUNS from physical Windows area to an ESX VM without formatting

Hello. I'll convert machines physical (with converter stand alone) in virtual machines on my ESX servers.

These servers have local drives (for the OS, the quorum and other data readers) as well as multiple LUNS.

    First question:

My thoughts were to convert only local drives (jump the LUNS as they are already on the SAN). Then have the path of the SAN people (let me see) to my ESX servers. BIG draw back is that when I first plug a logic unit number, he wants to format. How can I connect to it and knew him ESX as store data without formatting? On the page [disk/LUN - formatting], there is no way NO format.

    Second question:

When you allow an ESX box to see a logic unit number that uses a Windows box, there is assertion that ESX wouldn't let me even see. It happens just to expiry. Is anyway about this or what I was removing people SAN paths to my Windows boxes and then add first to my ESX boxes later?  The SAN is controlled by another agency and this would add a lot of time in the middle and these servers are critical and can not be down for long.

If anyone can provide fairly detailed steps I would really appreciate it.

    INFORMATION:

    vCenter

    4.1.0 345043

    ESX servers

    4.1.0 < various levels of patch >

    physical boxes

    Windows 2003

    SAN

    Hitachi Fiber Channel

    (1) you can use these LUNS as RDM (raw device mapping), in which case you do NOT have to reformat them.  You just create a mapping of RDM.  See page 140 of this document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_esx_server_config.pdf

    (2) Windows will apply the locks to the volume.  You need service entirely volumes of old guests prior to commissioning for the new ESX hosts.

  • ESX host managed by VirtualCenter servers all see the same SAN LUNS / data warehouses

    Scenario of

I have two separate deployments of VirtualCenter (in the same physical location) VCA and VCB with each deployment management 5 x ESX hosts (10 in total).

All 10 hosts are allowed to look at the same SAN LUNS / data warehouses?

Or I have to isolate five VCA hosts and five guests to their own SAN LUNS VCB / data warehouses?

Basically, we have our direct environment and we are on the beta program for VI4.

I want to turn off a virtual machine in the direct environment and then pull it out of the inventory.

Then I want to go the VI4 Beta and browse the data store and add this virtual machine to inventory.

These two environments may see the same LUNS / data warehouses.

I did and it works however I want to make sure that it is an approved practice.

You can do that normally without any problems. Even if the virtual machine is in a different datacenter inventory and there Powred-Off. You can map the logic unit number on the VI4 and add to the inventory of the VI4 another host.

Recently, I did this practice to migrate from host with virtual machines in a different subnet to the host who knows the same setting SAN LUN in the other subnet.

  • How to add a LUN VMFS format without formatting? in vSphere 5.1

Hi people, we need to mount a store of data that was previously seconded.

Is it supposed to be an option called: EnableResignature or > DisallowSnapshotLun but is not present in vSphere 5.1.

Can someone has a workaround for this? We just need to set up a data store without formatting!

We use vSphere 5.1 Ent.Plus Lic.

    Help, please!

    Concerning

You can always re - mount an individual to a host data store if he is always aware that the data store was just disassembled.

Options EnableResignature or DisallowSnapshotLun is relevant only if you present a new LUN with the VMFS volume to a host that already has a volume mounted by the same UUID of VMFS (for example a volume snapshot of SAN-side).

Since few releases ESXi, you don't even have to set the options manually beforehand. It comes when you add the data store in the vSphere Client will ask you what to do, whether it is the will of the volume. Will simply means just assign another name VMFS UUID and the data store, that's all.

He does not reformat the LUN. So that you can move forward, then up the LUN.

  • ESX 3.5 can not see data warehouses, (but can HBAs)

I have a problem with multiple ESX servers that I'm putting it online.

They use a San, and LUNS are configured correctly and are on the configuration of the storage adapters page.  However they are not in a storage configuration.

I tried to add data warehouses, but the LUNS are not listed. I also tried a new analysis of the HBA and even reboot the host.  LUNS have not appeared.

In addition, a couple of live servers in the same farm "fell" ONE of their inventory.  I am very reluctant to perform a new analysis on the living hosts where it falls the rest of the LUN.

Someone at - he seen this before?

    Iain,

If you can see them, then your zoning is OK, but if you can't access it, you must check your LUN masking is implemented correctly.]

Check your zoning and your mask and let us know how you go

  • I can add a column to an existing table with the data.

    Hello

    I'm working on
The Version of database: Oracle 9i

I can add a column to an existing table that already has data with below given command.

    ALTER TABLE table_name
    ADD the definition of the column_name column;

    Kind regards
    John

    Add to that:

If your new column is NOT "null", you need the task in 3 steps:

    1. Add the column without a NOT NULL constraint
    2. the default value of the new column added.
    3. Add the NOT NULL constraint in the new column.

  • Assessment vCOPS 5.7.1 - did they add a way to exclude specific data warehouses?

    Hello

I tried vCOPS in the past and I know that this was not possible.

I just started a trial now, but I still want to exclude all data warehouses and a couple more which come from a file server that is always 99% full. These data warehouses are not used for virtual machines and shouldn't affect calculations in vCOPS.

Is there a way to exclude the calculations? Thank you.

Put all your data warehouses in vCenter the in a folder called "LOCALS" (or something else you like) - this folder will also be known by the VCOPS (may take 5 minutes). Then in VCOPS create a new strategy and clone of "Ignore these objects." On the page of the association take place 'record' and add your folder "INHABITANTS". Check 'current effective policy', it must be on "ignore objects.

Now, whenever you add a host to vCenter, make sure you put this local data store in the right folder "INHABITANTS". This way you will have exclude them calculations.

  • Add new data warehouses to LM - Bug?

    I am trying to add a new data store to my new brand LM, for I am in 'Resources' - & gt; "Hosts" - & gt; Click home or right click on property - & gt;

Under "available for this host data warehouses: ' I can see my two new LUNS which I attach to the availble early host and no tick on the front, then Iticked them and click OK.

Then I went to the tap data store, still don't see no new one here.

I missed any thing or it is a bug?

Org are you?  If I remember correctly, you must make the data store available as a resource to the org.

  • Data converted without format... What is that called?

    Hello

I am fairly new to this forum, but made SQLs for the past 4 years.
I often see this "construction" that confuses me a bit:
    SQL> select date '2010-02-01' d from dual;

    D
    -------------------
    01/02/2010 00:00:00

    SQL> select interval '3:15:20' hour to second i from dual;

    I
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    +00 03:15:20.000000
I understand that it helps the user don't not to specify the input format data (even though I think that it is not not a good practice), but I don't know the name of this technique, and where, in the official documentation I can read more about it?

I would like to know things like:
-is it stuff, or only SQL SQL * more?
-What is the predefined entry format
-What version he did became available
    -etc...

  • Upgrade question for data warehouses - want a confirmation

I have read in the upgrade guide and think I have the answer, but would like a confirmation e-mail.

    It's my current scenario:

Three ESX 3.5 update 3 guests share a single fibre channel LUN and two iSCSI LUNS. The LUNS are all VMFS3 format.

vCenter 4.0. (It was just upgraded from 2.5 to 4.0 today)

I would add a fourth server from vSphere ESX 4.0 in the data center. I would like for this server to be able to share the same LUN VMFS3 as other ESX 3.5 hosts. Then I will move the VM from 3.5 servers to the servers of 4.0 one at a time, the upgrade of the VMTools on the virtual machine I. When I get enough VM on one of the servers of 3.5, I can pass this host to 4.0, and then keep the VM off the coast of 3.5 moving slowly until they are all on 4.0 hosts and guests 3.5 have been upgraded to 4.0.

I want to confirm is that I can add a shared LUN of VMFS3 existing to the new host of 4.0 without the host 4.0 formatting or otherwise destroy the VMFS3 data store and the VM 75 who live on that.

Looking at page 10 of the guide to upgrade, it says "no VMFS upgrade is required if you are upgrading an ESX3.x with VMFS3 data warehouses, then I guess it's ok. I guess that I didn't know, what if I shared a LUN exist with a new server, ESX4, whatever this scenario changes?

    Thanks for your help.

I want to confirm is that I can add a shared LUN of VMFS3 existing to the new host without the host 4.0 4.0 formatting

That's right, what ESX 4.0 is non-destructive, unless you explicitly tell it to erase / format partitions.

If I shared a LUN with a new server, ESX4, change something about this scenario?

I don't know exactly, but ESX version 3.21 of VMFS, 3.03 3.02 introduced 3.31 VMFS.  ESX 4.0 is as 3.41 (I THINK), but it does not matter they are ALL compatible, these are revisions minor and no need to reformat.

  • ESXi with two data warehouses

    Hello

I created an ESXi server with 2 data warehouses (2 logical drives). on the logic reader1 esxi is installed, and datastore1 is located. in this datastore1 all evnironments tests are recorded. on the second locial drive2 datastore2 is registered. There are all produvtive stored systems.

When I added the second esxi data store it says that all existing data on the logical drive will be removed. No OK no problem right now.

now logic disk1 ranout (datastore1) of space (50 GB hard drive). So I decided to replace it with a new hard drive with a lot more capacity. During the procedure to install esxi on the new drive hard I won't lose all data on logical disk1 and datastore1. but again not problem - test only environments (2 machines) it.

But if I add my second drive to esxi - will I lose all the data on it too? or is there a workaround for just add to esxi without losing all my data?

    Thanks for help.
