Add hosts to new cluster HA - downtime?

Running two ESX hosts v4 - update1. All VM lived on DAS until recently. Implemented ISCSi SAN and reinstalled all VM shared LUN.

Verified that both hosts have access to the same Lun, same config network and DNS seems to work fine.

Create a cluster HA with VM followed active and I'm ready to add my two hosts.

Can I add my hosts to the HA cluster whithout incur no downtime safely? Installing the agent HA requires a reboot?

Thank you.

same answer applies. Adding a new host in a cluster CVS can be done online.

    Hello

I'm building a new environment of virtual machine with vSphere 4 and vCenter 4.

Think I may have a problem with licenses!

I have two hosts and use a NAS with NFS server. The servers have been built, vCenter has been installed. I'm creating a new cluster for the hosts, but when I try to complete the process I get an error informing me that "license not available to perform the operation. the license of vsphere 4 advanced host does not include VMware DRS upgrade the license. »

I bought and installed the following licenses on my 2 guests - VMware vSphere 4 Advanced for 1 processor (Max 12 cores per processor).

And VMware vCenter 4 Foundation for vSphere for up to 3 guests.

Any ideas on the license error?

    Kind regards

    Keith

    Keith,

When you have generated your cluster, you have selected the checkbox 'turn on DRS '?  If so, it's a perfectly valid message.  The Advanced Edition does not come with the Distributed Resource Scheduler.

Check here - comparative vSphere Edition license for more details on the license editions support which features.

    Hope that helps,

  • Add hosts with existing virtual machines for 'Greenfield' active DRS Cluster

I'm currently involved in a project for the hypervisor 5.5 and vCenter. Existing are 2 physical servers with redundant everything and 8 SAS hot swap hard drive bays. Initially, 8 bays only 4 have been populated with hard drives. Hard disks have been removed, ESXi 5.0 has been loaded, 4 virtual machines created on each server and all lived happily ever after.

Now, I would like to upgrade these servers to 5.5... as follows:

I filled the remaining 4 bays on each server with some hard disks and created a second strip of sufficient capacity (twice the capacity of the 4 original disks). I'm stop servers, past the stripe for starting a new band of readers and installed ESXi 5.5 on the new band. The old Strip also remains in tact, so that I can start to ESXi 5.0, if I set to boot from the original soundtrack or boot to ESXi 5.5 if I boot to the new band (two operating systems starts very well, are properly networked, configured vCenter, etc.).

When booting in 5.5, he sees his own, new band and is also the soundtrack which is listed as a second data store attached (I think actually I want to make possible migration of the simple VM from the old to the new data store), both are disk space of LSI, Non - SSD, Type VFMS5.

Panic sets in when I start both computers in 5.5 and the time comes to add 5.5 hosts in a cluster (I also want to test the vStorage DRS and HA) and I've reached the setting of the, "choose Resource Pool." I'm scared to death that choose the first option, "all of the virtual machines in this updated host in the cluster resource pool root. Pools of resources currently present on the host computer will be deleted. "will mean not only a reformatting of the new band which I would like to add to the cluster, but also the still attached old band that includes the data that I want to keep. I don't want to lose data or virtual machines on the soundtrack, but to migrate them in a cluster of 2 servers ESXi 5.5. I was really hoping to migrate data to new tapes on new hosts and then re - purpose boards 2 original (on both computers) as a third table vStorage.

    Issues related to the:

    1. If I choose the option "put all the virtual machines from the host in the pool of resources of the root cluster. Pools of resources currently present on the host computer will be deleted. "with all the drives connected, all my data will be lost?

    2. If I pull the 4 original disks (5.0) and use the option 'put all virtual machines from the host in the pool of resources of the root cluster. Pools of resources currently present on the host computer will be deleted. "that with the new arrays connected (5.5) and then reconnect the old paintings after that the hosts are added to the cluster, will be only the re added still get sucked into the tables and data deleted?

    3. choose the second option, "create a new resource pool for virtual machines from the host and resource pools. This preserves hierarchy to pool resources in. the host' a safe option? If this option works, no matter if I have my original array attached when you add hosts to the cluster?

Last point: by reading all the documents I found it seems strongly suggested to set up guests who have not a deployed virtual machines, that's why I'm going to great efforts to try to keep the new hosts as empty as possible and with 1 port base networking while waiting to complete the configuration. Does it matter if I migrate virtual machines or add them as guests to the ESXi 5.5 before or after I have add hosts to the cluster?

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'd go with option C.

VSAN I would agree has some stupid requirements, but that they were aiming for is almost class company SAN at a decent price by using the SSD as caching tables, but as you said if you don't need not good I would continue to go with a NAS NFS solution.

  • Add ESXi 4.1 host to ESX cluster

Can I add a new host ESXi 4.1 to a cluster of ESX 4.0 flawless on the servers in the cluster to the new host ESXi 4.1 once it reconfigures the AP for the HA cluster?

IF not is there a reason that I can not add the server to the cluster during the day without any problem?

Thank you for your help with this.

You should have no problem adding 4.1 host in the cluster.  However, in order to manage a crowd 4.1, you MUST run vCenter 4.1

.. .on a side note.  Usually, I add hosts in the cluster in maintenance mode.  Once it has been added, exit the maintenance mode so the HA agent can be installed.  In addition, none of this will cause an HA event.

  • migrate to esxi free host in the cluster paid with minimal downtime

Please excuse my ignorance, I am very new to VMware and I am familiar with the concepts of other virtualization software, I used, but not some of the termininology, and maybe that's why my research are not turning to the top of what I need.

We had been using the free esxi hypervisor based to host some server hosts.  These servers are running a copy of our database and are used for reporting applications.  They are also setup with files VMDK provisioned very large and thick (> 300 GB!).  They were spread great for a year now.  However, we just bought the VMWare "vSphere 4 Essentials Plus" kit for the creation of a cluster of 3 machine, with a few redunancy and other features we wanted.  We also have a new san to go with it.  We are very pleased with the product and move to her!

On the other invited VM running on this host, (and several other hosts, its amazing to see how they arise) I stop the virtual machine and the vCenter Converter allows you to migrate the virtual computer to the new cluster.  At the same time, I would like to convert it to the thickness of a provisioning. However, because these clients have very, very big thickness provisioned HD, its research as they would take five hours or more to migrate. (other VM moved to essentially 1 GB/min)  These report servers can go without updates the master DB for several hours, but servers should always be available. I can't have them down for 5 hours. There are a lot of historical reports are refreshed by the end users.

Is it possible for me to do what follows somehow? I can't understand:

    • disable the DB update
    • closing comments, take a quick snapshot and then launch the guest.
    • While his copy running (and not updated) main and VMDK files file to the cluster (therefore only changes to files in the snapshot file)
    • on the new cluster, once copied (or during the copy) convert the VMDK to a thin provisioned (given that only about 85 GB of data is used in fact to this topic).
    • Finally, bring up new comments on the cluster at the same time I get comments on the old host (and ignore the changes that have taken place on the snapshot file, since its mainly a readonly report server)? and re - activate the DB update.

For end users who would be about 5 minutes total of downtime (basically, two reboots) which would be much easier to deal with than the 5 hours (each!) of how we are past other virtual machines would.

If the stand-alone host has the same type of CPU and family, you will be able to add it to the cluster otherwise just add to vCenter. You will always have access to other features.

  • Create the new host to the Cluster and Cluster

    Hi team,

Have we not document or steps to create the new Cluster and add host to cluster?

In addition, what are the post configuration that must be done on the ESX host? As switch, Nic, the data store Configuration?

Should we add the storage front of cluster before adding the host?

A process document or a step will be really useful.

We plan to automate the process and any entry is really useful.

For starters, it is User Guide PowerCLI, that comes with the installation of PowerCLI.

And there are a lot of messages and blog discussions in this community that meet some or all of your questions.

See for example establishment of data centres, Clusters and adding ESXi host VMware vCenter 5.x with PowerCLI

Storage is assigned to ESXi hosts and for use in a clustered environment, you will probably want a shared storage.

Maybe you need to split issues separate, more specific issues.

This would make it easier to respond in this community.

  • Create a VMFS and add it to all hosts in a cluster

Hi, I'm trying to create a script in order to create a data store and then present it to all hosts in a cluster.

You must be connected to the Cluster Get

You need not create the data store on all nodes of the cluster.

    Just 1 host is sufficient.

And the creation of a new store of data forces a new analysis.

  • Cannot add hosts again Cluster?

    Here's the situation:

3 servers to new ESX 4.0 I am wanting to add to a new brand

cluster I created. I activated the cluster for HA, DRS and VCA

and to add these 3 guests to it.

I get the message error "the name 'host_name' already exists.

This may be the cause? The documentation I've read, he says that

a best practice to create an empty cluster first and then turn it on

features that you want such as VCA, etc. and then add the hosts.

I'm doing it, but I'm not having any success because of this error.

Also, as a note aside... when I go through the add hosts Wizard and it

Gets the license section. I have 2 options... Choose the mode of assessment

or choose from a list of existing licenses... the problem is that the

List of licenses... in this case 3 for guests I have already install

with their appropriate licenses are grayed out. I can't select the

licenses, so I leave the assessment and move. Is this normal?

I appreciate all help... Thank you!

Are you a right click on the evc cluster and by selecting Add a host?  If the host already exist in the virtual Center, just drag and drop them on the new cluster.  Ant add you host twice to vcenter.

  • Add host to cluster: "Timed Wait vpxa to start."

I have a group of 15 guests ESXi 5.0, with a 5.1 vCenter / Enterprise Plus license. This works well for some time, but two of my guests have been disconnected from tonight and am now troubleshooting.

When I go to reconnect them, I get an error saying that "a general system error: timed out waiting for start vpxa» I did some research and found that it was generally linked to snapshots, but none of the virtual machines on one of my hosts not connectable have snaps at all.

    I tried:

    -Restart services vCenter

    -Restart vCenter

-Restart the services on the host

    -Reboot friendly hosts

    -Reboot hard and cold hosts

-Switch off all virtual machines on the hosts and pass by the maintenance mode

-DNS works between hosts and vCenter and vice versa

-Time is correct on the hosts and vCenter

-Network connectivity between hosts and vCenter is good (all on the same switch)

However, nothing seems to work, and I can not add these hosts on my cluster. What is strange, is that I can connect directly with vSphere, but I can't get them back in my vCenter. I spend the usual guests when add (where you are asked to assign a license, etc.) and he sees the virtual machines on the host I add, but the time out with this error after 5 minutes.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

AHA! I found this article which he sorted:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=2031894

Note that (for Googling useful), you will need chmod 777 /etc/vmware/vpxa/vpxa.cfg before you can edit it and then chmod 444 it over once. Restarted the vpxa service and I could add the host again.

  • Restoration of host/VM statistics after add host to cluster

After the removal of certain hosts in a cluster and then add, all the statistics of the virtual machine are gone.
Is it possible to retrieve these stats?  He has them only for 'real time' and 'day', which is the time, since they have been in the cluster.
Oh and keep in mind, when a definition of the alarm is selected in the right pane, a cluster can ALSO be highlighted in the left pane, so hitting delete, deletes the item currently highlighted, and this could be a cluster. Oops!  and right-click on the task in vSphere client, the Cancel option is grayed out!  (and yes there is a confirmation "Are you sure" after delete...)

When you remove a host to vCenter, it assumes that the entity is more managed and you will lose all the performance statistics, including virtual machines. There is no way to restore this information, once added, vCenter will continue to collect and by the work of roll-up, you will begin finally to see your weekly, monthly, statistics etc.

  • Add host in EVC enabled cluster?

    Hello

I have a 3.5 HP DL380 G5 server with two Intel Xeon 5150 CPU ESX host. Today, I turned off all the virtual machines on this host and tried to add the host in a cluster active CVS, but it says that the material of this host is not compatible with EVC. But in this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1003212, it shows that the Inter 5150 CPU is supported by VCA, why he still say it is not compatible?

    Thank you

    Steven

    Hi Steven,

For your DL380, you have the following enbaled in the BIOS of the server:-they can be found under "processor Options.

    Intel Virtualization = WE

nX (execute people with reduced mobility) = WE

Two above must be turned on to that compatible with the functionality of CVS host.

  • Deployment models for the new cluster - "A" failed to Connect to Host

    Hi all

I reorganized my ESX 3.5 2 130756 machines in a new cluster (they were already members of another cluster & lt; - this can be an important factor here).  When I try to deploy new virtual machines from templates to the new cluster, almost immediately, the task fails with the error "failed to Connect to Host."  Here's what I did on troubleshooting:

-I confirm that nothing has changed on the console host IP and DNS service on the ESX host configuration

-restart services on the ESX host management - tried again, failed.

-removed and added hosts in cluster - tried again once, didn't

-disabled DRS on cluster - tried again, failed.

-confirmed I can deploy templates to other clusters

-confirmed I can deploy a new virtual machine custom again cluster manually

-restart the ESX and vCenter server hosts

-removed ESX cluster hosts and destroys Cluster and file

-recreated cluster and added guests, same error

I think I've tried all the basics, but please let me know if you think something else to try.  In the VirtualCenter newspapers, there are the following entries whenever the task fails:

Unexpected exception received during the NfcCopy

(SERVER_Template) (vim.fault.HostConnectFault) unexpected exception during clone. Abandonment.

It seems that the model does not really know where he lives.  I am trying to convert a virtual machine model and try to run a migration on it to a host.

Otherwise, you may need to remove the inventory model and look for the data store that it is and resave.

  • Need help: vSphere 4.1 old cluster to a migration 5.1 new cluster

    Need help!

Well, we need to replace the old vmware 4.1 (3 former hosts in cluster) with the most recent output 5.1 (3 new hosts in cluster).

We have 3 DAS old_hosts connected to the SAN HP P2000 G3 FC (we have only a single SAN who has 2 active FC ctrl with FC port 2 each - if only one FC port is free).

As the new material is very different (1 Xeon E5335 2 GHz for every former host) and 2 Xeon E5 - 2630 2.30 GHz for each new host I'm not so sure be allowed to add new_host to the old cluster, not you?

If this is the case, that is the best strategy to run a migration as possible interruption less?

Anyone can suggest me what logical steps, we need to achieve our goal?

    (b) create new cluster with EVC mode enable (based on the old family)

so, I don't do any CVS operation on the old cluster?    Y/N

Nothing changes in the old cluster and other Word is YES! operation of EVC.

    (d) to migrate all your virtual machines in esx old new host esx (with sufficient resources)

When I see in my inventory vcenter the old and the new cluster in order to migrate a virtual machine between them that I have to drag and drop the virtual machine on the label of the new cluster name? It is enough, or there is another way to do this?

Yes, you can drag and drop again cluster or you may use the Migration Wizard to migrate the virtual machines. Both way can be works.

When I have all the virtual machines in the new cluster, the situation is:

-cluster hosts are running in VCA mode

-VMs are run in EVC mode

so if I now turn off the CVS mode on the cluster hosts automatically will work with all the features of the CPU or they should be stop/start?

VCA mode cannot be disabled for virtual machines operating in EVC mode. If you want to disable, you must stop your virtual machines before first VCA mode off.

FYI, the VCA mode is for mixed with different hosts of the family of processors, but in your case, the VCA mode is you help to minimize downtime and the planning of your downtime for virtual machines. If you don't want to use the old family processor, then you must turn off your VM and migrate to new hosts. So in this case, you have no need to allow the VCA. This CVS is you help migrate live Webcam virtual machine to the new family of processor host without downtime. Because virtual machines live runs on the cpuID of processor mode the lowest.

If you want to disable the VCA mode on the cluster, you need to do that there is no VMs is under tension. Because to the VCA ID CPU mode will change.

    Just my cents

  • Addition of virtual computer network to a host in a cluster level

    Dear all,

I have two hosts Esxi running in a cluster under vcenter. The two hosts have two physical NETWORK card connected to the network and configured as trunk ports to VLANS, all traffic through VLAN for which we created them 'virtual machine port groups' under vswitch0.

Now for a new requirement, I need to add a new "virtual machine labeled network" under vswitch0, can I do vcenter, as I am connected to vcenter and I click on my desired host server go to his networking > vswitch0 properties and click 'Add to create my group of port required under vswitch0.

I used to do this on the hosts when we did not have a vcenter and ran hosts without a cluster environment. But now we have vcenter and the foregoing gave two hosts are under him. Can I do this with all the problems? I have to perform the same operation for the second host in the cluster?

If anything is unclear, please let me know. Waiting for your response.

    Thank you

You can create group ports for vCenter vm as well for a specific host.

    It won't make a difference.
