Since the problem is on all of my PCs in various operating systems and upgraded to FF4 seems to make things worse, it looks like a bug in FF. Most of my friends who use Firefox have the same problem. It is a bug, or is it repairable? Does anyone know how to solve this?

  After, with great difficulty, eliminating the motor leads from my system, I tried half a dozen other things, but ultimately never gave up is fixed without wiping my hard drive clean.   Are you sure that they are in the format .aiff? It looks more like an actual audio CD for me (in this case, the music files will have a .cda extension when displayed in Windows Explorer).

  If it's an audio CD, then it probably has info CD-text engraved on it. You can install the plugin WMPCDText allowing WMP read this info. Unfortunately, there doesn't exist a plugin similar to iTunes.

  There is a pref extensions.enabledAddons you can find on the topic: config page.

  One possibility would be to have two versions of a user.js file to initialize this pref with extensions installed and enabled and copy one you need by launching Firefox via a cmd file.
  If you are that tight on memory, then you only need to run a version at the time.

  It is Pref plugin.state to disable plugins in case you want to do the same, but plugins are used when you visit pages that use them and affecting all the plugins for "Ask to activate" should suffice.

  I suggest that you run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage diagnostic tool in normal mode (not safe mode) and copy and paste the results into a response for further analysis:

  Run the tool and when it ends, click the copy button, open a text such as Word or Notepad file and select Edit, paste. You can paste directly into an answer here. Open a response, right click and select Paste.

  This immediately gives you the product key, but it might help to show the way forward.
