  All trial versions AoE are reduced to the version of the game, only allowing you to do very limited things, but including enough game for the game files to run correctly. To have the characteristics of many games, you have to download the rest of the game files during the validation of your CD key, I'm almost certain that you can not do like this from Microsoft.   Ok! What you need to do, it's MSAoE.exe right click and select Properties. Then, go to compatibility and then run the program with windows 95. Go down to settings and run in 256 colors. Then select run as an adiministrator. Click on apply, and then run the trial version download. Please note: this can temporarily ruin the color scheme on your PC.   AFAIK for Age of Empires II are some fixes available. Have you installed them? As far as I know you can download on the Microsoft Web site.

  You can also try starting the game in compatibility mode. That's why I choose Windows XP.

  Press F2 right after the power of the machine (when you see the toshiba logo) whereas there should be the option you want / need.

  Did you already check if you have the latest version of the bios installed? It would be a good idea to do so:

  I have a problem of Age of Empires 2 running on my new computer. Keeps displaying the following error message: "cannot initialize the graphics system.   I had the above problem with AOEII:Age of the Kings. My brief spec is Windows 7 Ultimate edition (SP1) and a card nVidia 8600 GT. I did the following (make sure you reboot after each installation):

  Make sure that you are running the latest patch of AOEII:AOK (2. 0 a):

  Download and install the latest version of DirectX:

  http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?ID=5264

  Download and install the latest nVidia Driver suite. I left the autodetect my card software and reset all my default settings. I also installed the full software suite:

  Finally, right click on the shortcut of AOE and click Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab and select the following:

  -Run this program in compatibility mode - choose Windows XP Service Pack 2 (!) NOT 3!)
  -Disable visual themes
  -Disable the Composition of the Bureau
  -Run this program as an administrator

  One of the above options maybe work on its own, but that's what I had to do to make it work and I tested it after each step.
