An image of vmware workstation running on ESXi 5.1 9

Hello

I have a vmware image of Win Server 2008 I am able to run on a vmplayer running the Ubuntu 64 bit PC. According to vmplayer, it's a workstation image 9.

I also had vm workstation 8 32-bit on a 32-bit PC Win7, but I am unable to run the image here, probably because the host is only 32-bit.

I now run the image on a 64-bit server running ESXi 5.1. I know there are steps to export an image workstation to ESXi via my computer, but my workstation allows 32-bit vm convert a 64-bit image? What are my options?

Thank you!

It is less the host operating system that is important, it is the CPU that you use and available BIOS options (e.g. "VT - x" for Intel processors)

ESXi does not support the format of sparse virtual disk Workstation uses by default, so you can use VMware Converter to convert/transfer the image of the workstation to ESXi.

  • What is the fastest way to convert VMWare workstation VM of ESXi?

    Hello

Was curious to know what is the quickest way to convert a VMWare workstation VM to a VM compatible ESXi. Is the method of standalone converter VMWare at the following ADDRESS of the faster method:

    http://www.networkinghowtos.com/HOWTO/convert-virtual-machine-VMware-Workstation-ESXi-vSphere/

Or is the method below faster? The method below mentions converter standalone is required for Workstation 8 VM but did not mention if it is needed for Workstation 8 AND HIGHER VM (ie: 9 and 10 workstation).

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1012258

My ultimate goal is to export on a USB key and then import on the ESXi instead of convert and copy it to the network server. I'm exporting to my 3 TB USB would be faster than the copy of the virtual machine on the network. Thoughts?

I think the second is the best option VMware KB: export of VMS in VMware Workstation to ESX/ESXi

As you can see you can export the VM and after import on the EXS (do not use personalization)

But uf you have Vmware Workstation 8 or higher, you can connect to the ESX Server and move the machine. If you are in the same local network and do it at a time of low workload, it would be the best option.

  • VMWare Workstation VM on ESXi 4

It is possible to launch a virtual machine created in VMWare workstation on VMWare ESXi 4.0, I copied the vm on the data store directory and add to the inventory and everithnk seems ok until the end of the process, when unknown apper (invalid) in the name of the virtual machine, the virtual machine is Ok, acctually runs in another computer.

¿It is possible that the copy process fails because the virtual machine was running when I copy?

Also, anyone know if it is possible manage usb to add vm to the datasourse direcctly in the Esxi server, the conecction network is too slow for some vm.

    It is possible

You need to convert it with VMware converter available on the Download Center here http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/datacenter_downloads/vmware_vcenter_converter_standalone/4_0

Wil you must do a V2V conversion

    Hope this helps

  • VMWare Workstation 7 and ESXi

    Hello

I just started testing Workstation 7 on the Linux host and noticed in the selection of the platform the ESX.

I played a bit with ESXi a while back but necessary that the machine for another job.

Now I wonder, is it possible to run ESXi in WS - it would be great to hear.

    Best regards

    Kari

... would be great to hear.

In fact, it is precisely for this reason that it is available.

You need to have a processor 64-bit and VT - x enabled in BIOS in order to run ESX (as well as other guests of 64 - bit) as a comment system.

If you want to run nested in the ESX VM guests you must change the vmx file according to nested VMs running

  • VMware Workstation running without the GUI

I used to use VMware Server and configured to start some VM, I need on-site at startup. I went to the workstation to work with our ESX VM, so now I wonder if there is an easy way to get a similar behavior.

There is no a lot of information about this in the manual, I tried running ' / usr/bin/vmware - blah.vmx x ' when when I connect, but the graphical interface starts too. If I can remove the GUI and I have just the tray icon, I'd be a happy man.

Once my session X crashed and the VM kept working well, so I guess that there is a process that is actually running the virtual machine independent of the GUI somewhere can I drill to get the virtual machine started?

N ° workstation is designed for interactive virtual machines.  6.x and newer, the ability was added to maintain a virtual machine running in the background AFTER it was launched upward - however the GUI should be started to start/run prompt, AND user must stay connected (i.e. the virtual computer is running as a user process).  If you want to run virtual machines under services, using VMware Server.

  • PXE cannot start an image of VMWare workstation 7: driver missing

I have a client with this problem. I found a thread at the Microsoft web site:

    http://social.technet.Microsoft.com/forums/en/w7itprohardware/thread/5c74d385-98f9-47c8-962f-b0cfc47abadf

The possible solution would be to add the following line to the .vmx file say VMware to emulate an Intel card.

    ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000".

    http://communities.VMware.com/thread/69483

But in the file of the client, it can not find this configuration at all. The next line is: ethernet0.vnet = "VMnet1.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you very much!

    Leon

    LeonHanChina,

Welcome to the VMware Community Forums!

    > ethernet0.vnet = "VMnet1.

It is the network to which the virtual machine is attached, not the device.  I remember, VMnet1 = host only network... which I think would be fair if you want to perform a PXE boot anywhere, but the host.

You can still add the line to dictate the network card.  If the line is not present, it will assume a specific adapter based on the chosen operating system type.

    Kind regards

  • VMWare Workstation - clone an image but not the OS license?

I have Windows 7 and 2008 and images Linux VMWare Workstation fully licensed, with additional products installed and configured with data for a demonstration complex.  I can't give a partner (that is outside my company) because I don't have a license for redistribution of OS, so I was wondering if it is possible to make a sort of clone of my image into an image VMWare the BP prepared as fully licensed, without crushing for example the Windows license info , so not a clone of bit for bit full.  For Linux, I think I could make rsync between two images, but how can I do this on Windows with its registry etc. ?

first to clone then boot from a cloned image & changes made again a clone

I hope that the core 3.10 will be supported with the next version of bundle.

There is a patch for VMWare WS 9.0.2 to play nice with 3.10 kernel here:

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware#3.10_kernels

Or you can wait for VMWare WS 10.0 out...

  • Necessary firewall on VMWare Workstation Guest?

I have a guest on VMWare workstation, running in bridged mode.

I have a software firewall on the host (ZoneAlarm).

Traffic of comments filtered through firewalls (ZoneAlarm) host s/p?

Because it picks up it's own IP, I thought that it is not.

    ...

(Of course, the guest must still AV and anti-spyware stuff since I use its browser on the internet.)

    CyberBeach,

Yes, you need a firewall as is if the guest was a separate physical PC.

  • 64-bit in ESXi running in Vmware Workstation machines

    Hi all

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W510 with an i7 processor.

I have Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit as OS for my vmware Workstation 7.1.3 (64-bit), I install ESXi 4.1 as a virtual machine in my machine and now start importing the VM since my ESX datacenter (you want to use what I already create in data centre infrastruture in my laptop)

I was very surprised, inside my ESXi 4.1 it says when I try to start a Windows Server 2008 R2 or trying to create an image of the installation CD to:

msg.cpuid.noLongmodeQuestionFmt: this Machine vistual is configured for 64-bit systems Nailer quest. However, exploitation of 64-bit is not possible. This host does not support VT for more information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152. Continue support 64 - bit wihout?

Any thing I can change or change to make it work?

    Thank you

    Paulo

You can't execute nested invited 64bits.  Autoprogramming comments any64bit hardware assisted virtualization must be enabled (VT-x/AMD-v). When you run ESX (i) as a guest, it is not possible to passdown technology.

In conclusion, you can run 32-bit clients nested

  • How to configure the network adapter when you run ESXi on VmWare workstation?

How to configure the network card installing ESXi on VmWare workstation 6.0.0?

These are the options: I tried bridged, host-only NAP.  None of them works

What Miss me? driver or adapater?

I'm running on vmware workstation on Windows 7 with Lenovo laptop.

in the configuration of your virtual machine, the main issue is memory. you gave the 2 GB of RAM, whereas ESXi 6 cannot go forward without minimum 4 GB of RAM.

If please have 4 GB of RAM and re-run Setup. you will get through.

message about the network card should also not appear after that. What kind of network you choose depends on your need.

  • ESXi running inside VMWare Workstation 7.1.4

I tried running ESXi 4.1 inisde VMWare Workstation 7.1.4 but when I turned on I got the message below

"VMware ESX running on a virtual machine requires the external virtual machine is configured to run a VMware ESX guest operating system." You cannot power on a virtual machine, until the external virtual machine is reconfigured. "

Enjoy an ISO of help how to solve this problem.  Thank you

  • Our guests in ESXi running VMWare Workstation can join LAN

Educaional purposes, I have the following configuration:

On fedora 15, I installed VMWare Workstation 7.1.4

Inside VMWare workstation, I have isntalled ESXi 4.1

Now, my problem is the following.

Any isttalled of the virtual machine in VMWare Workstaion can surf the internet and see the other devices connected to the local network. Physical and virualized machines.

Virtual machines installed in the ESXi peut obtain DHCP from the DHCP server on the local network or physical addresses.

Virtual machines installed in the ESXi cannot ping the GW, nothing beyond the Gulf war or other machines on the same LAN. BUT they can ping the ESXi...

For ESXi virtual machine is implemented with bypass and four NIC

Now, anyone have no idea why my Windows machine gets DHCP but cannot send traffic the other way around? For me t looks like it stops at the level of the ESXi host. But I canoe understand why.

T.I.A. for your time and help

    Welcome to the community,

I'm not sure, however it could be related to fashion "Promiscuous" which may need to be enabled. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/287

  • 64 bit VMs in ESX/ESXi 4.0 that is running as a Virtual Machine in VMware Workstation 7.0.1

I created an ESX4 host in VMware Workstation 7.0.1 as a Machine with 4 GB of RAM, 2 vCPUs and 1 (25 GB for installation) VMDK virtual and more later added 75 GB VMDK as an iSCSI LUN using openfiler.

My vCenter Server runs as a Virtual Machine with SQL Express Edition 2005 DB.

I want to install a Windows Server 2008 R2, which is a 64-bit as a virtual machine within the VM ESX4 embedded operating system. Is this possible?

    Hello

as this comment by DOC from VMWare, in the 'internal' invited you will just be able to run 32-bit clients, never a 64 bit one.

    Best wishes / Saludos.
