VMware Workstation running without the GUI

I used to use VMware Server and configured to start some VM, I need on-site at startup. I went to the workstation to work with our ESX VM, so now I wonder if there is an easy way to get a similar behavior.

There is no a lot of information about this in the manual, I tried running ' / usr/bin/vmware - blah.vmx x ' when when I connect, but the graphical interface starts too. If I can remove the GUI and I have just the tray icon, I'd be a happy man.

Once my session X crashed and the VM kept working well, so I guess that there is a process that is actually running the virtual machine independent of the GUI somewhere can I drill to get the virtual machine started?

N ° workstation is designed for interactive virtual machines.  6.x and newer, the ability was added to maintain a virtual machine running in the background AFTER it was launched upward - however the GUI should be started to start/run prompt, AND user must stay connected (i.e. the virtual computer is running as a user process).  If you want to run virtual machines under services, using VMware Server.

    Hello

    We conduct the following problem:

We have a Windows Server 2008 hosting two Windows XP virtual machines using VMWare Workstation 7.0.1. Every few days/weeks, we find the host that is running but VMWare Workstation closed without error message either. I checked the log of the virtual machine and here is the interesting part. What can trigger such behavior?

I need to manually complete the vm procecess - ware.exe, remove *.lck items and restart the physical machine...

If I stop the virtual machine, all work without problems...

    any ideas?

Hi riccimaticand welcome to the VMware communities!

Try disconnecting the virtual CD/DVD drive.  It seems that there are situations in which problems arise to restart a guest, operating system while its virtual optical drive is connected.  The most common cause is using MagicDisc/MagicISO on the host, which is known to cause exactly the problem you describe.

    See you soon,.

  • VMWare Workstation cannot specify the page 'specify the Destination?

What you're trying to convert?  The physical Linux machine, perhaps?  If Yes, then the only destination supported VC/ESX, you can't P2V directly at the workstation.

  • An image of vmware workstation running on ESXi 5.1 9

    Hello

I have a vmware image of Win Server 2008 I am able to run on a vmplayer running the Ubuntu 64 bit PC. According to vmplayer, it's a workstation image 9.

I also had vm workstation 8 32-bit on a 32-bit PC Win7, but I am unable to run the image here, probably because the host is only 32-bit.

I now run the image on a 64-bit server running ESXi 5.1. I know there are steps to export an image workstation to ESXi via my computer, but my workstation allows 32-bit vm convert a 64-bit image? What are my options?

    Thank you!

It is less the host operating system that is important, it is the CPU that you use and available BIOS options (e.g. "VT - x" for Intel processors)

ESXi does not support the format of sparse virtual disk Workstation uses by default, so you can use VMware Converter to convert/transfer the image of the workstation to ESXi.

  • 9501 motor example step by step running without the Premium Library

I'm putting in place of the stepper motors (9501 NI cRio-9074 module).  I want to run the engines exactly as in the example of Position (open-loop) control in Labview, but we have no access to libraries SoftMotion Premium.  Are there examples run this without using these libraries?  I have no experience with engines so know how to do this from scratch would be immensely helpful as well.

NEITHER RIO includes examples for NI 9501 module that do not rely on Softmotion.

SoftMotion premium includes FPGA screws that control the 9501 easier. It also gives the possibility to use the independent axes so your FPGA-defined axis can be controlled by the NI Softmotion engine. You can use the 9501 without premium Softmotion but obviously you do not have access to these features.

The examples will give you a good start to understand what is required to control a stepper - motor and how to use the 9501 of the to do.

The example of 'Control point OR setpoint (open loop) - 9501' is a good starting point. The FPGA VI has loops to demonstrate how to pass the RT position setpoint to the FPGA, simple generation step on the FPGA and how to configure the parameters of the 9501 - such as the microstepping rate.

Editing the entry under the registry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key

Changing registry keys did not work.  I'm out of ideas.  I guess that there is a way to do this.

  • Header for pages in the meantime running (without the style of certain)

    Hello!

    Here is my current problem:

    Setup

A story. Each chapter of the story begins with a chapter with a style called name for example 'chapter '. The chapter style has the beginning paragraph 'next page' parameter

I wish that all pages to display the name of the current chapter.

Under "headers running", the selected for the header style, must exist on the same page of the header to be written.

This means that only page who already have their names of chapters on them, will be able to view the running header in the page header.

Should I try and add the name of chapter as a kind of invisible text, which exists on each page? Or what would be the 'best practice' writing 'current chapter', at the top of each page?

    Thank you

    Andreas Jansson

(Also, I think that the search engine needs to be restored.)

    Nope

Once you have picked up a certain style to use for a running header, it will be used for all the following pages as well - right up until the style is used for another text. So that will be used in turn, and so on. Just try it!

(Also, I think that the search engine needs to be restored.)

Without a doubt. Even gets commented on Jive's own forum (and irritating, on their own forum, they got their own research back up again).

    Hello Kenoodle,

Right-click on the executable NoteTab Pro.  There, click on properties.  Select the Compatibility tab.  It check the box to run as admin.  Click OK.  It should stop the guests of the UAC.

There is a patch for VMWare WS 9.0.2 to play nice with 3.10 kernel here:

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware#3.10_kernels

Or you can wait for VMWare WS 10.0 out...

The official version said that WS allows only virtual up to 8 TB of disk.

According to my own tests, it only limits the size of the VMDK for 'New - VM' Assistant.
Once you have a greater vmdk - just tried a vmdk 10TB - WS won't complain about the size.
I don't expect that WS will prevent the physical disks to use inside a virtual machine that is already configured.
So in your case I think you started WS with a normal user account.
Try to start as administrator WS - maybe even using the administrator account.
I think that then it will work.
Unfortunately, the error messages produced by vmware.exe are not really accurate-, so there is no way to know if you really have a bad super block.
To test if this is really the problem and not just an error message - poor try to mount the drive directly.
Please post the vmdk - want to know if there is something unusual about 5.5 TB in the disk.

  • How to work the Optimus compared to VMware Workstation 8 with enable 3D

Hi, I am doing some performance tests in VMware Workstation

There are some improvements to run VMware using the Nvidia card or there is no improvement at all, and it's better to use default Intel card?

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate host and as a guest Windows 7 Ultimate so I can compare with the windows experience.

    Host:

    screenshot.1.jpg

    Comments:

    screenshot.2.jpg

Another thing I found interesting is why the performance of the hard disk are the same, but the memory is quite low in comparation with the speed of the host

Is it normal? Can I improve the performance of the memory procesor or 3D in some way?

As the comparation that I am very interested in the functioning of memory per second.

There is always some trouble when virtual hardware running and it is not that you can do to improve except to avoid paging, the latest version of VMware Workstation and have the updated drivers.

The Windows experience index is also a pretty poor excuse for reference so according to what are your objectives is better there tools like pass etc.

What type of workload are underway in the virtual machine?

  • How to activate the Internet connection on Windows Server 2003 is installed in the virtual machine in VMware Workstation 8?

I have Windows Server 2003 is installed on a virtual machine in VMware Workstation 8. I need it to learn and practice the use of the Active Directory. I've also set up 3 Windows XP workstations connect to it, which means that they can communicate with Server 2003. What is lacking is the Internet connection on all of them. When I run ping 8.8.8.8 in one of these virtual machines, I get, 'Destination host unreachable.'

I'm not sure, what if the problem comes from the settings in Windows or the settings of the virtual machine.

    Can someone help me?

Thank you, guys. I was finally able to put in place. It was quite an ordeal to deal with IP addresses and virtual networks. Here's how I did (in the screenshots) in case someone else needs it.

(I also confess that it is perhaps one of the ways to implement. Maybe there is an easier way to do it with DHCP...)

    1. in your computer where is installed VMware Workstation 8 begin the "Virtual Network Editor." It is located in the folder of installation of VMware Workstation. And implement the network following (VMnet2 in my case):

2 then in VMware Workstation itself in the virtual machine when Windows Server 2003 is installed set up two network as connections:

This one is for external access to the Internet:

And this one for intranet communications AD:

    3. then in the machine virtual de Windows Server 2003 set up what follows for two network adapters:

    For Internet access:

Then, you need allow this connection to share:

And then for the ad access to workstations (ensure that the static IP address is in the range specified in the virtual network over VMnet2 network editor). I've also set up DNS to 127.0.0.1 because I installed on this Windows 2003 DNS server:

    4. from the Windows 2003 VM try ping 8.8.8.8. It should work now.

    5. go to each workstation, in my case, Windows XP, each in its own virtual machine and set up the network in the VMware Workstation as follows:

    6. then in the virtual machine, configure the network connection for Windows XP workstation. Don't forget to assign a new static IP address for each workstation, which not coinside with IP of the domain (this IP address must come from the range specified in the virtual network over VMnet2 network editor):

    7. try first ping the domain, in my case ping 192.168.237.128. And then Internet, ping 8.8.8.8. The two should work!

    Continue with steps [5-7].
