Automatic updates won't install

I had this same problem two months ago. Whenever I turned off my computer, I get the message windows is installing 1 of 2 updates. But they do not install. I had to get help from technology to solve the problem, apparently the 4.5 installer has been disabled by a third party, and the old version, 3.5 installer, could not handle the installation of these two new updates.

For the previous post and responses to this topic, see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/automatic-updates-wont-install/3a91a645-5ccc-464d-a99e-c3301c755c45

Does anyone know how to activate the 4.5 installer? And why this happens every three months? Do I need the assistance of technology again?

Thank you

Michael

Gerry, thanks for your help, but it was much too complicated. I called help Andres tech that solved the problem...

  • Automatic updates failed to install six new updates.

I had a problem with the MS updates and worked with a Service professional customer online supports Microsoft MS.  The suggestions he gave helped with updates that don't settle and apparently cleaned as well other issues.  I am very grateful for the help. However, two days later the automatic updates tried to install the new updates and they did not like before with the same error code (error Code: 0 x 80070017).  A description of the six failures arises from the history of MS update:

  • Microsoft Management Console error: this function is not supported on this system. Also noticed that the automatic updates did not install it and returned error 80070005.

Original title: Microsoft Management Console this feature only is not supported on this system

I am running Vista 32 bit Business since an administrator account.

Recently, I noticed that the automatic updates did not install it and returned error 80070005.   After investigation, I found that I could not open mmc at all and always get the message "this function no is not supported on this system.  No major changes have been made to the configuration to trigger it and I can't watch the event log because it is in the MMC.
I have studied this question in line and tool the following actions, which none worked:
carried out a complete antivirus scan (I use Commodo internet security)
    created another account administrator
    has run SFC (no problem)
has run the registry cleaner (no problem)
has run msconfig.exe and disabled all the startup process
updated windows right click and run as administrator
Started in safe mode and tried all above
After that, I don't know where to go... it doesn't seem to be a download for Windows vista to reinstall mmc.
I have about 50 updates critical, sitting in my windows update that can not install because of this problem.  Can anyone help?

  • IE8 Update won't install - update Cumulative security for IE8 to Windows XP (KB2360131).

I was alerted to an automatic update titled "Cumulative Security Update for IE8 to Windows XP (KB2360131)."  I think that he has downloaded, but whenever I try to install it, the process fails.  In other words, I click on 'Install', initialization takes place and then it appears the installation, but it fails.  No error code is given, only one window that opens to say "some updates could not be installed."  I see that some 7 and Vista had problems, but does anyone have suggestions for XP SP3?  Thank you.

Applications, (Norton and McAfee) are notorious for not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself.

[You may want to print these instructions for reference offline. If a step said to reboot, reboot.]

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. After completing some you have a copy of your handy product key, uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate and everything Norton Add ons)via Add/Remove programs.

4 IMPORTANT! -Online activate Windows Firewall immediately after the restart.

NB: Now you're "working without a net": no to ANYTHING else online (e.g., navigation, reading e-mail, chat) until you have completed step #7 below!

    5. double-click on the file that you saved in #1 above to run the utility.  DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    6. do a clean install of NIS 2011 (using your product ID, if need be) & reboot. CF. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

NOTE: Do NOT activate or install additional modules of Norton (for example, Norton Anti-Phishing) immediately.

    7. manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate (Norton) until you get a prompt "no update more".

    8. open IE8 to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 & run the difficulty.

    9. for good measure, also open IE8 (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 & race that secure it in DEFAULT and modes and AGGRESSIVE. [1]

    10. restart once again & test.
