Automation of text in a table of contents

Hello world

I am trying to create a table of contents in Indesign CS4. I need the level first text in the table of contents is based on a certain paragraph style which is easy enough, but I would like the word "Chapter" and each of the numbers chapter will be inserted before the text. For example, the top-level element would be:

Chapter 1 [title of chapter here]

.. then Chapter 2 and so on.

Is there a way to automate this?

I don't know if the variables work or nested styles but I don't know how to use these.

Appreciate any help.

I have not tested the idea, so I don't know about you, but I think that make the table of contents list style a numbered list might work. You should be able to add a prefix before the chapter number.

  • Add text to the table of contents or the skin

    Hello

    I want to add text to the table of contents that shows all the time (is not clickable).  Is it possible to display some text of infomration on the bar of navigation/table of contents?

    Or is it possible to add it to a skin it will appear at the bottom of the screen?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Hi Julie,.

    You can try the project--> TOC--> Info it will open a dialog box where you can enter information about your organization, as well as a logo.

    In addition, if you wish, you can change a TOC and their default legend items.

    To do this, close Captivate.

    Open Notepad-

    Paste below-

    [TOCStrings]

    SlideTitle = Module name

    Time = time

    Status = status

    MoreInfo = my info

    Clear = Wipe

    ClearToolTip = State of Wipe

    BookMarkToolTip = book-marking

    NoSearch = String not found

    CurrTime = what

    ---------------------------------------

    Save it as TOCStrings.ini

    and place this file in the location of the Adobe Captivate installation on your machine.

    Now launch and add a table of contents to the Porject and preview or publish and see the change.

    Thank you

  • I need to create a table of contents in iPages but I want only one word for the title, not the line of holes. Or, how can I change the contents of the table? Thank you!

    I need to create a table of contents in iPages but I want only one word for the title, not the line of holes. Or, how can I change the contents of the table? Thank you!

    Yes, you can have a one word title, by assigning a paragraph style title to this one word. No, you cannot change the text in a Table of contents, but you can change paragraph style font attributes (line) and add for example, a head of points between the types of OCD paragraph and page numbers. No part of the table of contents will not provide hyperlinks in exported PDF documents.

    When you look up in the menu bar, you can see the word iPages, or simply Pages. There is no product of iPages.

  • Topics by opening the first occurrence in the table of contents

    Background: I created HTML5 Responsive help using HR 2015 for a web application. I organized the Hep role, then pages with these roles, users can access, and then by the tasks users can perform on this page. In many cases, a subject is listed under multiple roles and reuse and efficiency, I just dragged the same theme in the list of the topic in the table of contents as appropriate.

    I also used the text conditionalized on table of contents by role level. Using the example below, I have conditions for physician, nurse, and Patient, but I don't think that this is part of the issue well. Conditionalized roles were created for filtering purposes.

    Question: I have the overview topics that include hyperlinks to headings in red in the example below for each role. When a user clicks the hyperlink in this topic of presentation, he brings them to the FIRST occurrence of this topic in the table of contents, not the link that is associated with their role. When a user with the role of the Patient is in the topic view of their role and click the hyperlink 'Research for patients', help opens on this subject, but the "Searching for patients" in the topic role of physician in the table of contents on the left is highlighted.  Not a show-stopper, but it is confusing for users.

    Also, we had originally planned to use the filter feature to filter role help topics. When I filter to view only a specific role (nurse) and do the steps above, by clicking on the Preview 'Search for patients' hyperlink opens but there is no highlighting in the table of contents because this first occurrence is hidden in all the subjects physician.

    Note: This problem does not occur when I generate the content as WebHelp.

    What I want to do: When the nurse click on the hyperlink for 'Research for patients' of their overview topic, researching topic of patients is open and the search for patients is highlighted in the table of contents under the nurse, not the first occurrence (doctor).

    Questions: Is this a bug or is it repairable? And is it possible to fix it without creating the specific role of topics such as finding doctors for Patients, nursing research for Patients and so forth? I tried to delete the table of contents and start again, but the problem persists.

    Here is an example:

    Doctor

    Patient portal page

    Overview (contains links to sections below - view patient demograhic data, looking for patients, to renew orders)

    Display of the demographics of the patients

    Looking for patients

    Renewal of prescriptions

    Nurse

    Patient portal page

    Overview (contains links to sections below)

    Display of the demographics of the patients

    Looking for patients

    Display of orders

    Patient

    Patient portal page

    Overview (contains links to sections below)

    Update your demographic data

    Display of your prescrpitions

    My opinion would be that this is the expected behavior. My theory is that there is no information within the syntax of hyperlinks. A hypertext link is encoded such that when you click on it, you are taken to the landing page, as if sending the message "find the page named and post it by the specified parameters. What is happening is that the hyperlink goes to the first instance of the HTML page in your table of contents (.hhc file). There is no intelligence, he doesn't "know" that you are in the doctor or the nurse section - section he knows only that the page specified in the table of contents is listed in the file and thus, it only takes you there. The syntax of hyperlinks don't "know" where you are in the help system.

    I just also wanted to report the fault of strike in the Patient section, look a your orders of your example, assuming that you have copied and pasted into this thread.

  • How can I include a table of contents header in a second table of contents?

    I created a main table of contents for my Indesign CC document with all paragraphs which have "Heading 1" paragraph to be their style includes. That work perfectly well... with one exception: the topic of other TOCs. I use more than one table of contents, for example one for an index of the tables. These have their title defined yo "Heading 1" style, but the main table of contents simply do not include them even if I put it to include everything with "title 1" it cuts style. "." How to fix this?

    For reasons I don't quite understand (but probably have to do with not to create a recursive loop problem that happen if you try to use the same style in the current TOC), ID don't look in the stories of the TOC for the paragraphs to be included in a table of contents. You must either add a placeholder point nonprinting pick it up on the page to a table of contents or manually insert the text in a table of contents generated.

  • Paragraph styles are not properly in automatic Table of contents

    Hi all

    I'm currently busy with the lay-out of my doctoral thesis in Indesign CS6. I did the separate files for each chapter, after that, I joined the files in a document of a book. Now, I need to create a table of contents and want to do using the Table of contents style.

    I've already customized a table style content in which I said Indesign which paragraph styles should be included in the table of contents. I also created new paragraph styles to use as entry style. When you create a table of contents the lay-out seems just perfect, except that I set the text for being "fat" in my paragraph style, but it comes in the form of 'regular' text in my table of contents. Now I can pass this "BOLD" text by selecting it and alt + shift clicking on the paragraph style in the paragraph style menu. Problem is that after updating the table of contents text back to "regular". All the other stuff that I defined in the paragraph for entry style style (e.g., tablets, the font size, leading) are applied.

    How can I solve this problem? I would appreciate your comments, because it's annoying me a lot: S.

    Thanks a lot already!

    Did you apply a character style to your topics throughout the book?

    If so, this could cause the erratic behavior that you see.

    Check your table of contents update to see if there is a character applied to the imported text style.

  • Conditional User Defined Variable in the table of contents to RH10

    Hello

    I have a unique project created with tags of conditional compilation for a product in several countries. The name of the company was the same in all three countries, but now the name of the company in a country is about to change. I created UDVs with conditional compilation of tags to apply the appropriate name when aid is produced (Yay for RoboHelp 10 for allowing this).

    There are 58 topics in the table of contents that include the name of the company in the title of the topic. My problem is, if I include the UDV to the title of a page in the table of contents, conditional text is ignored.

    I guess that's because the table of contents allowing in conditional constructions apply to the page or the book itself and no text in the name of the page or the book.

    Please can someone confirm that this is the case? If so, I'll make a suggestion to Adobe.

    Thank you.

    Hello

    I hope that Willam won't mind my expand a little on the issue.

    I note that you already seemed to be aware that the UDVs are possible in the text of the table of contents. And if I understand correctly, your problem here is that you want to condition the UDV in the table of contents, right?

    Certainly a way to do that would be to have two different TOC entries. And apply tags to each, so that one or the other would be excluded. But to be honest, I always avoided tagging the elements of the table of contents that I saw myself mixed results.

    The thought here for me is that I wonder why you feel the need to apply a condition to a variable? Why not use a different version of the variable? Of course, you create variables and insert them, but you can actually create different sets of variables that have different values, then when you create your output you simply choose the Variable you want to use.

    See you soon... Rick

  • ID of the table of contents simple 3

    I use ID3 on a mac. I have a long document that I would like to make a table of contents, but the "usual" method to assign styles, etc. seems more complicated than necessary.

    Is there a way more easy to mark the words I want to appear in a table of contents that includes the page number then I can "generate" in the table of contents? Formatting of the text in the table of contents can be done after I have keywords and page numbers.

    Ok. I kind of got the hang of the usual method of creating a table of contents. I will continue to work with her.

  • Table of contents flowing to multiple pages

    Is there a way to get the table of contents flowing to several pages on the fly?

    I have a project where the Table of contents will be certainly several pages, but the content will be different per pound, so I don't know how many pages the TOC will be until the work is set up at the end.  Since the merger is done programmatically, the best thing would be to set up the FAKE text object if flow dynamically as he had a variable in it, but since it doesn't have a normal variable, the possibility to sell the document does not appear.  For any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for looking,

    I had problems with several tables of contents of page before

    I had my OCD set up as a master page with linked text boxes

    Meetings with only a text frame (IE table of contents page), there is no problem

    But when OCD runs through two - y

    Solution has been to remove the second image - update the table of contents and then create a new text related to the first frame

    the content must flow in

  • Asian characters in the table of contents

    Hello

    I use Robohelp 7.0.2 and I'm having problems for Japanese and Chinese characters is displayed correctly in the table of contents of my project.

    My HHC and Perfect files are correctly encoded in UTF-8 format and appear correctly in the main interface of Robohelp. My subjects also displayed correctly. I also have a translation German and all (including ulmhauts appear correctly) in all contexts.

    However, when I export the CHM, the text in the table of contents and index appear as question marks. The most likely problem is a place hidden somewhere, but can someone point me in the right direction?

    Thank you

    I discovered that change the language setting of Robohelp has allowed me to generate properly the CHMS.

    It is however unacceptable software that claims to support 35 languages. It should be possible to use the software without always having to change his language put forward and backward...

  • Table of contents - power of the text box

    Hello

    I recently started using Adobe InDesign and love it! I have a question around the table of contents. At the beginning of each chapter, we have a simple page with a box in it. (each chapter has about 10 pages). The intention is to have the content of the text become the title of the chapter box and have it displayed in the Table of content. The text box itself has several characters of new line in. When I generate the table of contents, InDesign creates several entries in the Table of contents (one per each new line in the text box). So my question is... Is there a way to specify that the content of the entire text box appears as an entry in the Table of contents. (I'd like to update the table of contents by hand to avoid any errors).

    I appreciate any help in this matter.

    Thank you!!

    So, you say that, break forced line and you want that all the rows in the table of contents? I think that I misunderstood.

    If this is the case you're going to the trouble of formatting of the table of contents, as the forced line break will carry you through to the table of contents (you can change the colours using styles or nested GREP and those will not set if you use a different style in the table of contents list itself).

  • tabStops in Acrobat Pro XI to generate a Table of contents, text do not fill

    Hi all

    I've searched the forums for an answer, but could not find. I'm defining the ownership of para.tabStops via JavaScript (or try), but do not see the fruits of my labor. The form field, after running the script:

    1. is not filling with any text
    2. has no tab stops within the field (checked with the properties of the form field text box)

    Here is my code snippet:

      //http://blogs.adobe.com/dmcmahon/2012/10/16/acrobat-xi-new-tab-stop-feature-available-for-rich-text-fields/
      //http://blogs.adobe.com/formfeed/2009/06/managing_tab_stops_in_fields.html
      //section, subsection, pages, date, revision
      //defines tab stops for text box, use "\t" to insert a tab
      this.getField("1-1ListOfEffectivePages_M").para.tabStops = "left 0in left 0.25in left 3in left 4.5in left 6in";
      var TOCLines = new Array();

      TOCLines[0] = new Object();
      TOCLines[0].text = "Table of Contents" + "\t\t" +  "I" + "\n";
      TOCLines[0].weight = 900; //bold
      TOCLines[0].textSize = 12;
      TOCLines[0].textColor = color.black;

      TOCLines[1] = new Object();
      TOCLines[1].text = "\t" + "List of Effective Pages" + "\t" + "1-1" + "\t" + Date + "\t" + "N/A" + "\n";
      TOCLines[1].textSize = 11;
      TOCLines[1].textColor = color.black;

      //...

      TOCLines[23] = new Object();
      TOCLines[23].text = "Miscellaneous Information" + "\t\t" + "XI" + "\n";
      TOCLines[23].textSize = 12;
      TOCLines[23].weight= 900;
      TOCLines[23].textColor = color.black

      //commit to TOCBox
      this.getField("1-1ListOfEffectivePages_M").richValue = TOCLines;

    Obviously, the field I want to be filled is "1-1ListOfEffectivePages_M" and it is in the PDF file.

    From what I can tell, there is not a problem with the code (that's what they all say, right?). Online documentation however seems to lack.

    I suspect that it is maybe because my PDF form is not dynamic, but I don't know how to check that.

    There are dynamic XFA forms and static XFA forms, and AcroForms. If you have an XFA form then you will only be able to change using LCD. AcroForms can only be edited in Acrobat.

    If you converted your entire form to XFA then your code should work in Acrobat/Reader, Yes, but this isn't a trivial task, and you will need to purchase LCD because it no longer ships with Acrobat, as it used to be.

  • Update table of contents (frame) in the primary anchor text stream?

    I understand that a table of contents of InDesign should sit on its own page or in a separate text frame, so it can be easily maintained and updated.

    Help of InDesign said: "avoid threading the TOC to other blocks of text frame in the document. If you replace the existing table of contents, the whole story will be replaced by the update table of contents. »

    Fine and understand. However, I'm working on a project where I need all the content (from the illustration of the cover of the last line) to sit in the primary sequences of the spread of master - including the table of contents.

    Here's what I've tried: I open the Table of contents dialog, made all the settings and click OK. Clicking on will now create a new text frame with the table of contents, which can be changed by selecting this image by using "Update Table of contents. So far so good.

    I cut this framework and then inserted as a framework anchored in the stream text main, just as I have anchor a table, image, etc.. However, after anchor this TOC frame, I can not more updated by using "update the Table of contents. It is just another framework, not recognized as the table of contents more.

    Is there another way to have a 'live', table being updated content that will float in the primary text flow?

    Thank you.

    Ariel, I think you should give up on e-mail responses - empty again...

    PlainMartin,

    I could make this work in CS6 (and I would consider another version that allows to drag the anchored object rather than cut and paste). Now the SHIFT key and dragging the blue handle in the main story, I could anchor the table of contents, and when the text cursor was in it I could update. Make sure you anchor in a separate paragraph that uses a style that is NOT included in the table of contents, or he'll start on update.

  • Table of contents Table of contents in excess but cannot be a text box

    I'm building a book ID CS6.  My OCD is in a file of preliminary pages.  When I update my OCD, it updates only through Chapter 9, even through there are 11 chapters.  When I open the table of contents in the mode of the editor of history, it is said there is overset text and show the rest of the chapters for the TOC.  However, when I try and expand the area of text, nothing happens. I checked the file for Chapter 9 and see nothing different from other files.  I already rebuilt this book because the models and other once got all twisted up.  I prefer not to rebuild again.

    Screen shot 2014-01-07 at 3.57.09 PM.png

    It turns out that the problem was caused by the dashed line.  I had the line set at 1 p p 0 and - 1 0 to leave a space for the chapter number.  However, when the number became 2 digets (10, 11, etc.) the text was obliged to the mark of the tab, made wide for the text box and so in excess.  I don't know why he didn't just go on a new line, but by increasing the dash a little, the text appeared.

  • Including the text marked in a Table of contents

    I would like to include only a few words of a paragraph in the Table of contents.

    For example, in the paragraph of the example, I would that the term blablabla appear in the table of contents "blah - blah blah blah blah."

    Is there a way I can tag 'Blabla' and I then the Table of contents dialog box include the referenced text?

    I use CS 5.5.

    Thank you.

    Fix. You must build the manual table of contents in this way, the first time (and make additions/subtractions manually), but once links are do they must be updated. You can do a regular TOC for reference at the end and put it on the editing table to verify.

    A word of warning, although I wouldn't do this with a book file to make a link to different documents. Inter-document cross-references have the reputation of being very fragile.
