Backup and restore problems.

Hi lemdy,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Windows Vista Community.  Restart your computer and press the F8 key until you reach the Advanced Startup Options menu.  Select Safe Mode.  Once your computer Safe Mode, do a System Restore to a date prior to the installation of unwanted software.  You have an antivirus installed on your computer?  If this isn't the case, you can analyze your computer by using the Windows Live OneCare free PC safety scan.

Original title: back up and restore the problem

I'll give you a full explanation on what is my problem, so that it will make it easier to answer if all goes well. I use Windows Vista and decided it was time that I backed up my files. After clicking on the tab "back up files", I then got a dialog box asking "how many times you want to create a back up" so I chose "per week" on "Sunday" at 19:00. "There is a message that goes down"because it's your first backup, windowws will create a new, full backup now. However when I click on the 'Save settings and start backup' tab I get the message "file back up could not save your automatic backup settings for the following reason.

  • Windows Backup and Restore problem

I have created an incremental backup for a while (since January) on a disk external drive plugged my USB2.0.

Recently my computer crashed and I did a new install of Vista.
After the update to Vista, I decided to restore my files from the outside.

I did the restore advanced, and it finds all the files and the backup. But when I continue to make the effective restoration, it gives me a "the backup file is not found. Check your hardware configuration or restore from a backup different (0x8100001A). »
I checked the permissions and all members have full control of everything.

I also tried to change the drive letter, but no dice.

The strange thing is that concludes the backup, and if I click on "Add files", he finds my backed up files! But when I proceed to restore, it only will not do.

    Any ideas?

    Hi OrangeL89,

This problem can occur because the Mediaid.bin file is missing. The Mediaid.bin file may be missing if you move the backup directory to another location.

If the backup directory is on a different drive or a different file share, and the original backup location is still available, follow these steps to resolve the problem:

    1. Search the root directory of the drive or the file share where the backup was originally stored.
    2. Copy the Mediaid.bin file.
    3. Locate the root directory of the location where the backup is currently stored.
    4. Paste the Mediaid.bin file.

For example, if the original backup location is drive D and that the backup has been moved to the E drive, copy the Mediaid.bin file located in the root directory of drive D to the root directory of drive E.

    5. Try to restore another backup file.

Alternatively, you can follow the article below:

  • Problems of restoring a backup of Windows Vista backup and restore program

I recently had to completely reinstall Windows XP, then the Vista upgrade, to fix a problem with updates of Microsoft.NET and ATI graphic driver.  In may, I made a full backup of my laptop using Vista resident backup and restore program, using an external hard drive to store the backup.  When I learned that I had to reinstall the operating system, I did another backup in August (but not complete) using the same program.  Just after this backup in August, I did the reinstallation of operating systems, with the help of the phone of Dell.  My original problems are solved.

When I was ready to use the restore the Vista program, I had to choose among the two sets of data (May to August) about which I wanted to restore on my laptop.  I chose August, thinking that it would be later.  However, in Outlook, all my saved e-mail messages are gone, I have no e-mail address book and any current calendar entries.  These are the only things I noticed up to this and are not, but I have not checked all the files... they are large enough.

The folder on my laptop which normally contains my Outlook data files shows only a file Archive and the very small current .pst data file for 7 messages in my Inbox.

It seems that the backup of August was important to may backup and maybe most of my Outlook data are in the may backup.  How to get data from two backups in my laptop?  When the backup is a folder with the same name, you have the opportunity to write about it, not copy, or copy it and have 2 folders.

I tried to copy all the data from the external hard drive in the folder of Outlook data on my laptop.  It will eventually be several files, and Outlook reads only the more recent, so I don't always get access to the data that I hope is here!

Can someone please?  My life is in my calendar, I lost years of e-mail addresses, and much saved messages that contain important data.  Thank you!

  • Satellite P750/P755 - backup and restore Windows 7

    Hello

My hard drive is about to fail on my Windows 7 Satellite P750; I get warnings of impending failure for a month now. I bought a hard drive again, and he's ready to go, but I am unable to create a backup and restore point. I get an error message 0 x 81000037: "snapshots of files cannot be read.

Let me give you a part of the history of my machine before we get to the question. Windows 7 is pre-installed on this machine. A year ago, I created a new partition and installed Linux. Linux then took over the responsibilities of the boot. A couple of weeks, I deleted the Linux partition. This gave me a problem because the computer could not start. Fortunately I had recently created a return upwards and the restore point, and during the process, I was asked if I wanted to create a Windows 7 Home Premium repair disc. I could use this CD to access a command line tool that makes the new bootable machine.

However, I have more a hidden on my machine boot partition (at least according to the disk management snap-in I'm not). Now, I get the above error when I try to create a new backup and restore point. I don't have a copy of the previous backup and restore point (I deleted it to make room for a new).

From my research, apparently, one of the possible causes of the error 0 x 81000037 is related to the size of the hidden boot partition. Because I do not have the hidden boot partition I fear this could be the cause.

There are other possible causes of this error. For example, a virus that the antivirus refuses to give access to during the back up and restore the partition, and junction points in to save readers who are the mounted volumes. I ran a full scan on my computer and cannot find any threats. I checked my junction points (which are a bit) and none are mounted drives.

This brings me to suspect that the lack of a boot partition is the problem. I saw in the forums of some suggest it is better to back up all my data in the traditional way (already done, since you ask), install the new drive to hard and then reinstall Windows 7.

So eventually, we get to my question!

Windows 7 is installed on my machine, I think that I don't have the disks to reinstall on a new hard drive. Is this correct? I am able to get a copy?

To be honest, I wouldn't reinstall Windows on a hard disk again, rather than using a return to the top of the spirit and point of restoration. I have a LOT of programs and rubbish that have accumulated in it in the (almost) last 3 years.

Thank you for your patience. If there are some details that might be useful, but I left out (I'm sure there is) please let me know.

    > I think Windows 7 is installed on my machine, that I don't have the disks to reinstall on a new hard drive. Is this correct? I am able to get a copy?

You have not all discs because Toshiba provides clean recovery disc creator software which is always pre-installed on new laptop computers.
This recovery disk tool or support of creator creates the recovery disk that can be used to recover the laptop.

It was a big mistake not to create this disk, however, you have the possibility to order this disc here:

  • Can I download Windows XP Backup and Restore Wizard?

When I bought my computer I did not receive the Windows XP disks.  I want to make a backup of the entire system on an external hard drive, as opposed to the individual file backup.  All the help files I've found say to insert the XP disc.  Then I found the Backup Wizard online and install it directly to my computer?

Since the Microsoft Answers forum does not have any kind of information system request when a new question is asked, we know absolutely nothing about your system.  Not knowing the basic information a problem prolongs the frustration and the agony of these issues.

Thank you MS Answers, allowing the resolution of simple problems as frustrating and a lot of time as possible.

If you are using XP Home Edition, you will need to install the XP Backup utility yourself and here are some instructions on how to do it.

If you are not using XP Home and XP backup is to give you some grief, try to describe the issue in more detail.

The backup program is automatically installed on XP Professional, but not on XP Home. If you have the genuine bootable XP Home installation CD, insert it into your system and navigate to this folder:

    \ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP

Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file to start the installation.

Here is a nice article from Microsoft which tell you all this:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/?kbid=302894

Here is another article that explains how to:

    http://www.winxptutor.com/Ntbackup.htm

If you don't have an installation CD and need to download the Ntbackup.msi file, here is the link if you can download:
    http://www.winxptutor.com/Ntbackup.htm

If you are using in relying on the built in NT backup to back up your system, it is the primitive technology (obviously - because you will be asked for a floppy disk).  If you have a disaster (even minor), you will have a big problem, trying to recovery your stuff, if you don't have a floppy drive.

If you want to make a backup, it makes sense to use modern technology - and that the technology is not integrated into XP.

There are many popular options for XP Backup and imaging software (s) of third parties.

A people a popular seem to love East of Acronis.

With this (free 30 day trial) you backup, you can make a bootable CD or bootable USB (which is modern, huh?) and use than disaster.

They used to have a completely free version - maybe no more - just the trial, then you must buy it, but it is highly respected.

It is so much more robust than the XP Backup, it's laughable.

Many other options if you do a little research on Google...

Here are a few products that PML has proposed may be attractive (use Google to find them):

    Acronis
    Macrium Reflect
    Paragon backup and restore
    DriveImageXML

Some disk cloning software for you to Google ideas:

    Acronis True Image Home 11
    EASEUS ToDo Backup
Paragon Drive Copy or Partition Manager Personal
    Casper
    Norton Ghost

  • Backup and restore in Mode safe!

I was having a problem with my computer laptop windows startup and now have hooked to an external monitor, allowing me to use the computer in safe mode. I've send the laptop for repair in the next few days and would like very to save all this as the problem with is probably the hard drive or motherboard. Thus, after a search in the help and support available on the computer, I found a link to the backup and Restore Center (for some reason that I'm not able to access it through the control panel). When you click on the link nothing happens... it is not possible to use the backup and Restore Center while running in safe mode?

If it is possible, and I'm just computer illiterate it please let me know how I should do it, I'd rather a lot do not have to install all my programs when I get my computer.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello jmcrawford22,

The backup and restore service is not running in Mode safe and you will not be able to perform a backup. I suggest that you manually copy files (personal folders) to an external source using Windows Explorer. You will be able to copy the files. However, you will not be able to save the data of the program such as backup and restore does not work as you are not able to start the computer in normal mode.

  • Backup and restore will not format disk

I try to use Backup and Restore. When I click on the back of the files, I get a pop-up box that asks me to format the drive. After clicking on the Format, the following pop up box says unsuccessful Format. Sometimes, he also disk write-protected. I use Vista Home Premium and using an optical DVD +/-RW drive. I was unable to find anything on it. Has anyone else had this problem? What I can do. I check all the settings I can. Thanks for any help.

Would you consider investing in an external USB drive and use it as your backup media.  This will work part-time full support until CD as the only hold about 700 MB of data and your hard drive is perhaps in a fit of 250 GB, what amounts to a large number of CD on current prices an external drive will pay for itself within a very short time and you are mucking around with several CD

He needs that a defective CD or an unexpected shutdown to occur and you may lose all your backup met before this type of failure.  If you must use the CD then just use them to backup your important data.  If you need to perform a full restore, it may be faster in the long term to perform a recovery operation by using your installation media rather than feeding in a multitude of CD.

One thing that I met, if you buy the CD on the main roads, is that, if they are not stored properly, at home or in a store, the last few CD inside tend to stick to the neighbor CD, which is not a good thing.

My personal choice is to use a third-party imaging software to back up the entire partition or drive.  I save on a different hard drive installed.  You can use the external hard drive, I tried to sell you.  The entire backup (40 GB) takes about 10 minutes, with a restoration taking around the same time.  I double save my data more valuable, as well, of other external media, like USB, DVD, etc.

    1. what happens when you access backup and restore?

    Step 1:

You try to run a SFC scan to find the corrupted system files and try to access the backup and restore.
