Backup by using a combination of Time Machine and Crashplan... policy valid?

I read a lot of discussion on the backup, but I always missed on whether or not the strategy that I came will work.  Hoping that the community will share their wisdom.

I have just a few files on my Virtual Machine that I really care.  They are: ~ 18 GB of files to archive Outlook and some Quicken files.  I don't think I need to worry about doing a restore of the entire system.  So my thought is that I can use Crashplan (on my Virtual Machine / PC) to back up my files select windows on my Mac HD and then a) using Time Machine to back up the HD-Mac (with the exception of the Virtual Machine) on my external hard drive at home and b) use CrashPlan (on my Mac) to save the HD Mac an external drive to my friend's House.

What is a reasonable and valid strategy?

In addition, if it is not obvious to the language I used, I'm a newbie...

Time machine is never a good way to backup large files that change frequently, because as I mentioned earlier, it fills your fast disk.  If you use your other backup to back up only to select content within the virtual machine and then put it on your mac, then using time machine for files that should be fine.  you want to just make sure that the virtual machine is selected in the excluded section of time machine preferences system.  For a direct backup of the entire virtual machine I just copy and past the folder of the virtual machine on an external drive, but as you can imagine, it's very intensive time.  If you want to back up only the files within the virtual machine then you are on the right track by choosing a third-party utility that can keep a few places in your virtual machine and an external hard drive in sync.  You may also have the program synchronize the contents of your folder and then if you wish then time machine back up.

    Hi marinersr,

I'm not sure the backup machine capsule/time, but according to me, that it backs up all data on your hard drive.

Yes, you can back up the Lightroom catalog on the hard disk external.

You can set the time of the backup under the catalog settings > backup > he would invite to the backup, when you exit Lightroom > click on select next to the location and specify the location as your new hard drive.

If you want images of both original backup, you can configure to create a second copy of the images on your external drive during import.

  • Time Machine and FileVault

Why the Time Machine and FileVault don't get along? Can someone explain this to me? Far as I can tell this is not only a specific model of mac or time capsule as doest get along. Its all models and all versions of operating systems. How can I use both and they not interfere with each other? Is this possible?

Time Machine can't save files encrypted... so, it must operate within the system. so, it can have full access to the files. It can then encrypt the backup.

But Apple has changed the way filevault works over the course of the history of Mac OS... whenever there is so unique problems.

Read the pondini to vault from file. Q25 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

What is important to understand, is that Time Machine backup never the outside file Vault... he should save the files without any encryption so as soon as something happens... He's lost. And encryption of backup is not related to filevault.

  • Time machine and backup Mail, Contacts and calendar

I installed an SSD hard drive 120 GB in my Mac Mini. I formatted and installed El Capitan in this SSD, then I'll just install my apps in there. All of my documents will remain in the original of the Mini hard drive. This is why I am asking how to transfer all my files from mail and messages, all my calendar events and all my Contacts on the new drive. I tried to use my Time Machine backup, but I don't know how. Is there an easy way to do this?

  • First external USB disk backup from Time Machine and Time Capsule

I have a new USB drive from 4 TB to use for backups Time Machine plugged on my almost full Time Capsule.  The Capsule is connected to my network using Ethernet, so it can be used to back up my MacBook Pro and iMac (via ethernet) (wireless).

I would like to initial backups by directly plugging the USB directly on my iMac and my MacBook Pro.  I currently have the USB plugged into the Capsule of time connected to the ethernet. The initial backup for my iMac took 2 hours to make the 35GBs of 1.6TBs to back up so far.  So potentially 2 + days of initial backup...?

There must be a quicker way.

Box: to recover from my iMac support precedent (after a crash), which stood on a 3 TB USB2 drive plugged to the Capsule, it was estimated to take 36 hours.  I fly over the drive and plugged into the USB port on my iMac and the recovery only took about 8-10 hours, so it does not work for recovery.

I tried to make the backup of the iMac by plugging the USB drive of 4 TB directly on the iMac. I then moved the dUSB Time Capsule drive, but he seemed to start when plugged into the TimeCapsule. If possible, I must have done something wrong in the order.

It is extremely difficult to backup directly to the USB port and then move it to the TC because TM backup differently at local and network drives.

People have figured out ways around it... but you think that it cannot simply... After saving 1.6 TB of data.

Make sure your computer is compatible with Lion mountain, Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan.

To check the model number and hold the option/Alt hold, go to the Apple menu and select system information.

MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3.1 or later version.

    Your Mac needs:

Installation of OS X 10.6.8 or OS X Lion

2 GB or more of memory (more is better - minimum 4 GB seems to be the consensus)

8 GB or more of available space

  • How to use Time Capsule with Time Machine and no Wifi

Situation.  Late 2009 iMac with OSX 10.7.5.  Used Airport Extreme since purchase in early 2010.  Use a modem cable from Arris SB 6141.  Decided to upgrade to 2 TB Time Capsule.  And the problems started.  I put TC in place... Finally, with the help of the people of this forum (thanks).  Transport CANADA does not have the internet connection to the Modem.  New to this forum I discovered that the TC does not like the SB6141.  So I put the Airport Extreme in the network and work like a charm wireless.

Now, how can I connect the TC to the network or the Mac to use the part Time Machine?

I tried to put the TC in Airport Extreme with an ethernet cable.  First, the iMac would not recognize the local network by removing printers and the other external USB drive; and my TV got confused on what wifi network with the same name in which to connect.

Before I hit the reset button on the time Capsule I tried to ask what would be the right steps.

Thanks to the folks on this forum. Thanks for your help.  Hope you all a good holiday this year.

You should not have really big questions on Lion.

Connect the WAN of TC port on the ethernet port LAN AE.

Configure the TC in bridge. I disable the wireless to EI and let it run in the TC... that's much better work in this configuration.

The Mac that will backup must really be connected to the TC in direct wireless or ethernet... This will help loads.

The wireless work better on the TC... If it isn't, then you can swap EI... but I'd be surprised if that was the case.

  • Time machine and Spotlight corruption

My time Maxhine back up not ended. I realized that I got and I canceled the back upward.

I used my second disc for the back and finished. When I went about this Mac it was completely blue. I reindexed my hard drive. While the result is not perfect, it is now. And I saved since.  My concern now is:

    1. are my ups back corrupt and if so it ruins so any chance of

    2. a successful restore, time machine? Because it looks like my hard drive needs to replace.

    Thank you

    1. check if your backups are ok by checking.

Option, click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar. Select check... and let it run. You should have the computer connected by ethernet to it to drive at a reasonable speed.

    2. He will restore successfully as long as you choose the date before your main drive is corrupt... You already have a copy of your TM backup on the second disc, which is good. Check that one too... so do not touch again...

Get the player on the computer has replaced as soon as POSSIBLE... so it is still viable to use as source of files... don't wait to total collapse.

  • Time machine and time capsule

I have set up time machine to back up my new time capsule at 05:30 last nite and he says 2 days. It is said about 4 days left at 9:30 this morning. I disabled mode "Eve". This does not seem normal. Anyone know what is happening?

Is the amount of data on the hard drive to the Mac?

Backups will normally move about 30 GB of data / hour on a wired Ethernet, if your Mac has 300 GB of data, then it would take about 10 hours for the first 'master' backup to finish.

If all goes well, you're not trying to make the first rear seat... who need to copy your Mac all... using the Wireless. This could take days.

If you use wireless, how the Mac is the time Capsule?
