Backup tips

Hello

I am relatively new to using Lightroom and have a couple of backup related queries.  I had my PC replaced work and was reinstalled on the new Lightroom.  My storage location for my photos has been on a network drive that is constantly supported.  However, when I had reinstalled LR while photos are back, changes that I made (cropping, apply presets, etc.) was not.  I understand that the raw file is never changed but I assumed wrongly that the changes were stored in the same folders as the DNG somehow.  How can I save these changes in the future?

Also, I would save my presets, I know are stored locally on my drive C: (Win XP).  Can I move this folder is also on the network drive, so it is saved automatically?  There is an option called: store presets with catalog, where the presets would be installed?  My root for my catalog directory is N:\Z_Storage\Lightroom Library\, but I see not the presets I created here when I activate this option.  What presets I have download, can they be stored on the network drive?

Thank you very much!

(1) backup of the changes

Mostly, the changes that you make to your images are stored in the Lightroom (the file called *.lrcat) catalog. Only when you 'Write to the metadata file' (Ctrl-S) or if you have automatically "write the changes XMP" enabled in the settings of your catalog, some (but not all) changes are stored in a so-called (for the Raws) XMP Sidecar file or in the DNG file.

I suspect you have re-imported all your images after you have installed LR on the new computer, which is not what you should have done. You need to open your existing catalog (for example by double-clicking on the *.lrcat of catalog file), and all your changes will be there.

So that the images not be presented as "missing", please make sure that your drive containing your originals retains the same drive letter, or you must reconnect your records by "find lack the folder ' on the top-level folders.

So if I were you, I would try opening the catalog that you worked with before and all your changes should appear.

(2) saving Presets

The default folder of the LR presets is not editable (moved) easily. There are ways to achieve this by using symbolic links.

If you have "Store Presets with Catalog" checked, LR will create a folder called "Lightroom settings" right next to your catalog (*.lrcat file), and store presets create you thereafter in there. Please note that presets already created in the default location of the pre-selection documents will not automatically copied or displaced during this folder once you select "Store Presets with Catalog".

Because Windows has a bad habit of store information (non-volatile) in C:\Documents and Settings, I decided to simply save this folder regularly, since trying to keep (relevant) things out is almost impossible in Windows.

Your backup tips is a good one--I keep everything what it I need to keep on 2 separate external hard drives that I only connect to my PC when I need to.  Having always upward, it's something I've learned in my 7 years of life! And I would never trust this thing 'cloud' take care of my files.

  • The touch screen

First of all, let me thank the poster who already helped me to this question in having posted on the tests under Device Info.  My pre in recent weeks has made these 'ghost' hit after I put the phone down or even when I use it.  First I wrote chalked up tasks and screen dirty and sometimes a little software as problem clean often arrested and turning then turn it stopped it.  These random touch screen became more frequent and cleaning or switch it off had little or no impact.  Finally, I read tests on this forum and the touch of the screen test shows that left all of the touch screen does not work.  Had a feeling that it was something like that, because when you do the SMS I was no longer able to hit the sign in lower left to start a new text message.

Guess that it is a defect in the screen and also guess there is very little that will see this question but have to ask if anyone else has?  I say default as the phone is not never dropped or used in any way that an accident could have happened.  Correct me if I have this wrong, but since this is a defect that should be covered by the warranty and no charge?  I live very rural and the nearest the actual repair center is more than an hour away so before you go I would like to know if it's something that happens from time to time and I do not see a home solution.  Have not even that hooked up to my computer again and I bought the day 1 of the version so no backup tips before you go?  BTW am happy with another pre touching itself and launch of things on its own.  Finally, and I don't think it's a fault of the screen, but all the advice on the protection of the screen?

Looks like you need a repair on this unit, and yes that would be covered by the guarantee as described. You must call the 877-426-3777 Palm customer service and to set up a repair or replacement.

  • Tip: Archives iPhone backup in Windows

iTunes manages normally a rollover backup for each device unless you restore a backup in which case it is archived with the date of restoration and a new backup created rolling. On a Mac, you can get iTunes to duplicate a backup set, but this feature is not copied into iTunes for Windows. With iTunes closed, you can select and copy and paste an existing backup folder in C:\Users\ < user > \AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup, and then give a folder name that ends by - yyyymmdd-hhmmss. When you restart iTunes extra backup set will be listed under Edit > Preferences > devices even though it will be the same as the original he was cloned from. Once you refresh the active backup, it should be possible to tell who is who, since timestamps.

Very smart, thank you. I have bookmarked this post. I didn't know how to archive backups in iTunes for Windows that you are using an external drive. I checked my MBP (10.11.5) and of course, there is a drop-down list in iTunes > > > devices that allows archiving. No option on my iTunes W10 (12.4.1). Is Apple iTunes "infantilization down" for Windows?

Can you tell me how you renamed the folder cloned game? Under backup, I have two folders, one for my iPhone and one for my iPad. Should I letting them copy except as existing names by adding the time stamp at the end of the alphanumeric string long? Like 6d473d7c6... 20160709? Is that what you mean?

Probably you already know, but Windows 10 you can go directly in the folder (normally hidden) homelessness by typing %APPDATA%\microsoft\windows\sendto in Cortana. In Windows 7 I had to change the "View" to view system files / hidden.

  • Need tips on backup and storage for photo / audio

I have an iMac of 2013 end 5 k. I do a lot of photography, treatment with Photoshop and Lightroom.

However, I also do a lot of audio (for the most part, podcasting), so I need a silence almost workplace.

When I bought the iMac, I also got a LaCie Little Big Disk. It's a quick series of PCIe SSD 1 TB super set pre-configured in RAID 0 mode, and it is completely silent. Certainly, it is a total overkill for photography work, but I was really happy with him... until he has filled.

I use a separate 4 TB of HARD drive in an external enclosure from OWC for disk backup internal of my iMac as LaCie hard drive with my photos.

Now I need more capacity, and I would also like to combine the storage and backup in the same case. Naturally, I am considering a Thunderbay OWC 4. But I'm stuck on which we get.

A 4 between thunderbay with JBOD 3.5 hard drives probably makes the most sense. I have 3 x 4 TB, HDD, one for storage of photos, one for saving the photo viewer, for Time Machine. And then a 1 TB of HARD drive to back up my iMac (512 GB SSD) drive. Problem is I'm afraid that's not too noisy. Even if I had a quieter fan, I'm worried about the noise made by the readers of spinning.

Second option is a Thunderbay 4 with 2.5 1 TB SSD in a RAID5 configuration. It would give me 3 TB of storage with protection against failure. With a Noctura fan, it would be nearly silent. But this isn't a true backup and I still need a separate backup drive, which is not the most elegant solution.

FWIW, I have backup off site with Backblaze. But although that offers protection data, if the entire Thunderbay somehow got fried, it would be nice to have a backup closer at hand than Backblaze. I believe that they will send a disc with recorded data, but not sure about that.

    Any ideas would be appreciated!

If noise from Thunderbay concerns then just get you a longer cable of love at first sight. I saw them in 10 meter lengths, then you can have the flexibility to put the box in another room or at least a distance of your office.

  • Tips of backup paranoia

I have an extra HD I want to decide if using it as a second backup time machine or second CrashPlan

    backup copy.

From now on. My iMac has an external hard drive, Time Machine and another external hard drive CrashPlan.

What do you recommend using the extra HD for?

A time Machine OR CrashPlan +?

    Thank you.

It allows to create a clone of bootable backup using disk utility's restore option. This will make a duplicate of your boot volume, including HD recovery. I would get rid of Crashplan because it can slow down the computer, create incompatibilities and is expensive. Hard drives are relatively cheap considering the life expectancy. In addition, they are much faster.

  • Backup: Problem access another network driveBackup, tips from other users

Hello everyone. I'm trying to use my NAS backup function to copy a file .rar from a share on a different network drive - a little old Maxtor SSD - but I get an error message:

  • TIPS OF BACKUP FOR DUMMIES

HP PAVILION.  MICROSOFT 7, 64 BIT. WINDOWS HOME PREMIUM.

I was told that computer, the files must be dumped every two years and only the important files back on the hard drive after recovery. I would like to know the best way to handle this. Should I start by removing all the waste that has accumulated over 2 and a half years, and then resumption of use? The only backups I've ever done are snapshot type of the operating system. In this case, I choose only what I really need.

I'm confused because I don't know how to save a program that has been downloaded and installed with many extracted files. How can I find this application in one piece and save until the computer went through a recovery? How can I save my favorites? I'm scared and need help. Thank you, Joseph

    Hello Joseph,.

OK, here's how it would work. If it is not already connected internally, you connect your empty hard disk to your computer and save your applications (programs) and the data to him. A really good backup application is free software EaseUS Todo Backup here: http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Todo-Backup-Free/3000-2242_4-10964460.html?tag=mncol;1 . The program scroll you through the backup process. Remember not to store your OS, since that's what you're going to replace.

Once that's done go here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01867418&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=5054169&tmp_track_link=ot_search to learn and print how to make the system recovery. The procedure is also explicit, just do attention to various "warnings" to protect against undesirable consequences.

Once this is done, you return to programs and data that you have backed up and restore to their original location. And that's all.

I can help you with specific tasks or questions, just post it here and I'll answer. It is 'a little' work, but it is a relatively simple procedure to do. I would like to know how I can help you in this task.

    Kind regards

  • Cannot delete the Time Machine backups

I have a MacBook Air and a 128 GB USB key that holds my library of photos, so I always make backups. My system - and I have recently made account how flawed it was - was to create backups on a 500 GB HARD drive, but to transfer them to a 2 TB HARD drive when it is full. So, I finally discovered that when I transfer backups in small quantities to the 2 TB, it takes more space because instead of aliases of files used to represent more recent backups, care of file just copied over and over again. For this reason, I put my 2 TB as a feature of time machine and imported all the old backups in the folder backups.db, that my Mac 'cleaned' and registered 135 GB. But 135 GB is not enough, I went and delete backups that I don't have anymore. When I looked in the trash to empty, I've seen 2 things: backups I have trashed and others who are pale sort out. I can't open the files, even if I right click and select "open in a new tab. When I try to "immediately remove" these paled-out files, I always get a message that they are "on duty." It is about 300 GB, so I must get rid of him. But it does not stop there, because when I try to "delete immediately" backups I had trashed myself, I get an error message! It is a total of about 600 GB, what I absolutely need to get rid of! If anyone has some tips, it will be greatly appeciated.

You have probably sprayed your Time Machine backup database. The best thing to do is erase the disc with Airport utility. Then start again with a new backup.

    Good day.

  • FCPX backup copy / pasted Time Machine drive does contain any of my changes.

So I had to reformat my computer, but before I did I made that Time Machine backup of my computer. When you reinstall the operating system, I chose NOT to re - install Time Machine backup. Instead I started clean and then just hung out and let down my FCPX library file of the external drive for Time Machine on the newly formatted Mac desktop. When I open the library of 500 GB, none of my edits exist, even if I had about 40 hours of changes in the project. I'm sure that the backup is somewhere, but I can't find it. Any tips?

Backups must be in a file in ~ / movies. This is the default location.

  • Remove the Time Machine backups in a certain amount of time

I have an iMac in the House which is not backup because I have just updated to El Capitan, then now it says that the time Machine doesn't have enough space for a new backup (no doubt because my 200 + GB photo library moved to the new application Photos). Therefore, I need to get rid of some my time Machine backup. My MacBook Pro has almost 1 TB of backup files and I want to delete some, but I don't want to delete ALL my files backup, just in case I need something from him. Is it possible to delete the backups in a certain interval of time quickly, in order to keep all my backups and delete the 'old'? I know that you can delete the backups one by one, but the first backup of my MacBook was in 2014, and I don't want to have to go through 100 backups one by one to manually remove all the...

    Hello

    I have an iMac G5, 27 "; Processor - 3.4 GHz Intel Core 17; Memory - 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3; Software - OS X 10.9.5 (13F1808)

Since yesterday, it was not able to Time Machine backup.

The initial error was "iMac that G5.sparsebundle could not be found (error-1).

I found a few tips here and there followed:-unplug TC; go to network/SystemPreferences, renew the DHCP lease

    Still did not work.

Is passed to the next stage of advice:-open the TM preferences panel, remove the TC list of backup destinations, add in

    Still did not work.

Error message has now changed to "iMac that G5.sparsebundle could not be found (error (null)).

Is this a defective Time Capsule?  (This is the conclusion, in other similar post, I found that my error message ('null') is different from that of this post).

    Thanks for any advice,
