Best SSD & HDD configuration environment iMac 2010

I put my 2010 middle level 21.5 "iMac with a 1 TB Samsung Evo 850 SSD. I'll use the OWC data backup kit to replace the optical drive in the iMac with the SSD. To feel pretty comfortable with the facility itself after having looked through the iFixit guide and various You Tube videos. My issue is with how best to configure the installed SSD.

I use mostly the iMac for Lightroom CC and I'm under El Capitan.

My 1 TB HARD drive and is full of about 80%. I want to use the SSD as boot obviously drive and also use it for all my applications. I just want all my old music files and RAW files on the HARD drive that I don't need to access often. There are about 300 MB of old RAW files, I can move on the HARD drive, then once as it is setup, I hope that I'll have to say 500 MB on the SSD and 300 MB on the HARD disk. As my RAW files grow I still move the old files on the HARD drive to keep the SSD to become too full.

I had planned to restore all my files for the SSD from a Time Machine backup and then format the HARD drive before joining former RAW HARD drive files. But:

-which is the best way?

There's an easy way to achieve the same goal without keeping all my cruft?

-going to have my HARD drive plugged complicated issues when restoring to the SSD?

-should I use carbon copy cone instead?

Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

How to use an SSD with your HARD drive

If you want to use an SSD as boot with your existing HARD disk drive, as the disk 'data', here is what you can do.

After installing the SSD, you need to partition and format the SSD using disc utility disc. Then install OS X on the SSD. Once installed OSX boot from SSD. Startup disk preferences to set up the SSD as the boot volume.

Open the preferences users and groups. Click the lock and authenticate you. Or CTRL - RIGHT click on your username account list in the sidebar and select Advanced Options in the context menu. You will see a field called "Home dir: ' on the far right, you will see an Edit button. Click on it. In the file dialog box, navigate to the location in house now located on the HARD disk (disk HARD/users/user_name /.) Select the folder, click the Open button. Restart the computer, as shown. When the computer starts, it will now use the home located on the HARD drive folder.

Another more technical method involving the Terminal and the alias is discussed in depth here: using OS X with a SSD and HDD - Matt Gemmell configuration. It's my preferred approach because I can choose which records of the House, I want to on the HARD drive and I don't want to. For example, I like to keep Documents and library files on the SSD because I frequently access their content.

Make sure that you keep the bootable system entirely on your HARD drive where you need it.

Note that if you open the computer Apple won't provide any additional support if you need it. Make sure that you don't damage anything. Learn how to do what you plan to do before you start. It's a bad idea to try to learn along the way. There are small tablecloths at the back of the monitor that must be removed in order to access the disk space. There is also a special thermal cable required. I suggest you visit OWC where provide it a kit to add another disk to an iMac.

You cannot copy OS X of your HDD to the SSD while leaving everything else behind. After installing the SSD you partition delete it, then install Snow Leopard top of your OS X disk installer supplied with the computer. After that, you can go to El Capitan if you wish.

Clean Install of Snow Leopard

1. start the computer using the Snow Leopard installation disc or disc 1 that came

with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.

After the ring, press and hold the "C" key.  Release the button when you see

a small gear appear under the dark gray Apple logo.

2. once the load setup program select your language and click continue

button. When the menu bar appears select utility drive in the Utilities menu.

After loading disk utility, select entry Out-dented the SSD in the list on the left.

Click the Partition tab in the main window of disk utility.  Set the number of

partitions to one (1) from the Partitions of the dropdown menu, click on the Options button

GUID, click OK, and then select define the Mac OS Extended format type

(Journaled), then click on the apply button.

3. once formatting is complete utility of disk and return to the installer.

Proceed with the installation of OS X and follow the instructions included with the installation program.

4. Once installation is complete your computer will restart in the Setup

Assistant. After finishing Setup Wizard will complete the installation, after which

you will use a new installation of Mac OS X.  You can now begin the process of updating

at the opening of updated software and installing all recommend updates to bring your

current installation.

  • New SSD - windows 8 or 10 on el Capitan (iMac 2010)

    Dear people of Apple support!

I may be one little different from others going on here and I hope that you guys can talk me through it. After days of trying, I'm a bit lost to be honest.

About 5 days ago I received my iMac 27 "(mid-2010) updated with a new SSD (originally there was just the 1 TB HD)." The new SSD (which is 512 gb) has been in the position where the cd/dvd drive used to be (that I now can't use more). I now have the 1 TB and the new SSD upward and running with el Capitan installed on the new SSD. Works great!

The main reason to go with the SSD is obviously to speed things up, but also because I wanted to have (8 or 10, I guess) installed Windows with Bootcamp on this SSD.

The things I have tried/made up to now:

-Have both iso of windows 8 and 10 loan

-Edited my info.plist file where I remove the "Pre" just before USBBootSupportedModels to activate the option in BCA where you can create a bootable USB key

-After trying the same mistakes with several usb occurs after BCA to restart first, which is "no boot device - insert boot disk and press any key".

-J' stopped the iMac and power on it pressing the option key where I found the bootable usb key (which showed boot EFI)

-A from there, I walked into the perfect installation of windows. ;-)

-However, that's where I really got stuck. I couldn't select my partition. Error on show details: 'Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is a MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows cannot be installed to GPT disks.

-After formatting, I had the same error as above (error of GPT disks).

-J' found this error a lot, especially on this forum. So I tried to fix it with gdisk (http://macriot.com/mcrt/?p=2362). Unfortunately no luck, I got the error to the step where you type 'w '. Error: Could not open device ' / dev/disk0 ' for writing! Errno is 1! Abandonment of writing!

-J' discovered that it has something to do with SIP and that I should turn off safe mode, but when I restart my iMac I can't get into recovery by using CMD + r. Mode I tried to use it immediately after her, short, long, etc, but all I get is a white screen.

Some things aside that I tried:

-Creation of a windows partition manually with disk utility (remove the fact first by BCA)

-Tried the two structures MS - DOT (FAT), and ExFAT

-J' tried editting the info.plist still more by entering a string below DARequiredROMversion (IM112.0057.B03) and USBBootSupportedModels (iMac11, 3)

Where I am at this time:

-Ready with Windows 8 ISO bootable USB

-Removal of all partitions in windows

-Reset my hd and SDS info.plist file (I guess there are 2)

--A STROLLER full reset (with cmd + option + p r to reboot) 3 times

-Said a MSC (I think it's called) reset where I disconnected my cable for 15 seconds

Trully I thinks I tried most of the things that I could find online, which led me to this post.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If any additional info is requirement please let me know.

    Thank you!

    Best regards.

Your iMac 2010 will not be installed Windows using without the optical drive boot camp.

You should try this option, but it requires you to buy Winclone.

You can also temporarily re - install the optical drive and make sure you install Windows on the main Bay drive (not in the optical drive Bay) and then put your second drive (the one without Windows on it) in the Optibay slot.

  • Best configuration for new LR install on the machine with SSD & HDD

    Hello

I have been in photography for years, but never got myself sorted to manage all the pictures I managed to take. So from Lightroom.

I am a new machine with a fast 256 GB SSD, a 2 TB HARD drive, and a clean installation of LR. I also have a NAS I use for backups, but I won't probably LR actively talk to him because it is only accessible via the wireless network. My collection of photos is already in the order of 500 GB, in order to put all my photos on the SSD won't work.

With this in mind, what is the best way to configure LR with this Setup to get the best performance out of it? The main purpose of the box will be for photography, so I don't mind too much if it uses most of the SSD.

    Tips are welcome. Thank you!

  • ESXI hosts 5-2 and the best way to configure vSwitch and Nic redundancy

    Hi all

Could someone help me find the best way to configure the vNetwork on 2 5 ESXI host for redundancy.  Once I managed to correctly configure the 2 hosts I will seek to use the same installation process for 6 guests.  3 sites with 2 hosts on each site managed all of vCentre Server

I have 2 DL380 G7 servers 5 ESXI installed on a class 10, 8 GB SD card, I'm looking to install VSA on the 2 hosts on each server with 4 TB of internal storage (8 * 600 GB 10 k SAS).  Each server has a gigabit integrated 4-port NIC and I installed a 2nd NIC gigabit PCIe 4 ports, I also x 2 16 switches of port with Layer 3 routing.  I use vSphere 5 Standard acceleration Kit I am looking to use vCentre server for managing, vMotion for maintenance, HA for the failover and VM 10/15 (vCentre Server Std, DB SQL to vCentre Server, Exchange 2010, SQL Server 2008 R2, IIS Intranet, Helpdesk, 1 DC, 2 Domain Controller, AV Server, WSUS, SCCM Server, and Terminal Server server).

What would be the best way to install and configure the network for performance and redundancy and am I missing something?

    My thoughts are, Teaming: -.

    vCenter - vswitch0 - port1 on NIC1 and port1 on NIC 2 - port1 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port1 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

    vMotion - vswitch1 - port2 on NIC1 and port2on NIC 2 - port2 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port2 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

    HA - vswitch3 - port3 on NIC1 and port3on NIC 2 - port3 on NIC1 physics 1 - port3 on NIC2 to physical switch 2 switch

    VM - vswitch4 - port4 on NIC1 and port4on NIC 2 - port4 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port4 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

or do I need an additional NIC on each server to hit the VM 12-6 VM for 2 ports on 2 NETWORK interface card, or maybe something else I missed?

    Thank you

In your case, to keep it simple and what I can say here is what would be my recommendation:

    3 standard vSwitches

    vSwitch0:

    • Management - vmnic0, vmnic2

    vSwitch1:

    • vMotion - vmnic1, vmnic3

    vSwitch2:

    • VM network - vmnic4, vmnic5, vmnic6, vmnic7

The only reason why that I didn't split the VM in other network adapters shipped is because the difference in the types of the DL380 adapter shipped and the PCIe quad.

  • Why is the screen on my iMac 2010 goes dark?

Recently, two problems started occurring with my iMac 2010. I don't know if they are related, but I read the answers to similar questions here and have tried the solutions proposed, but without any positive results.

My screen started to go completely dark sometimes. The computer still works, but I have nothing but a black screen.

Things I've tried: running a scan of viruses, reset the PRAM, reset the SMC, by lowering the brightness of the screen, installation of a 3rd party app to increase the speed of the fan (on the premise that maybe superheat).

When I lowered the brightness of the screen, I noticed my second problem.  Upon restart, the brightness of the screen would be how far it was before I lowered. (to 70%)

At least I get some other ideas the good people here, my next step will be to open my computer and start checking the connections to see if all the cables are properly installed.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Uninstall the antivirus application. There are no viruses that can attack Mac.OS X. For example, anti-virus programs are selling a cure for a disease that does not exist. And they are known for the Mac was systems.

This probably isn't the cause of your problem, but in the future it will be.

When the screen goes black, if you shine a flashlight on you see the Office?

  • need help to install El captain on iMac 2010 after secure hard disk format

Hey guys... This might seem newb but the other day, I wiped firmly (format single-pass) my HARD drive on an imac 2010 with the Mavericks. Somehow the OS partition has been removed by the previous owner, but they didn't know how and gave me the system as a gift. I had the opportunity to reinstall the Mavericks via internet, but using the original Apple ID, which I couldn't, so the full format. Formatting completely unregister the iMac and delete the App Store, iTunes, ID and other settings/passwords? I have a bootable USB, which will install El Captain but need to know if using my own Apple ID for the installation will work without problems? I'm at the point where the system is no longer automatically starts in recovery mode, like the format, which means that command + R is my next step, but I had to order a keyboard/mouse fixed Magic since it did not come with those. In any case thanks for any advice you can offer.

The Mac doesn't work this way. The material is not registered to any particular Apple ID. You can either use OS X Internet Recovery, which will install the original system provided with this computer, or you can install from a bootable installation on a UBS drive, in which case you can install any version of the operating system supported by the hardware you choose or that you can download.

In both cases, once you have started the computer from the recovery of the Internet or the USB drive, run disk utility to completely erase the disk before running Setup.

  • New RAM not working not not on iMac 2010

    Hello

I have a 21.5 ' mid year 2010 i3 iMac, and, after all this time, it was time to upgrade the RAM.

I bought 2 x 4 GB Patriot SODIMM PC3 - 10600 1333 MHz 204-pin, by following the instructions in the Web page of Apple memory upgrade (install memory in an iMac - Apple Support).: 4 GB RAM SO-DIMM memory DDR3 SDRAM 1333 MHz. I installed it according to job with factory 2x2gb RAM Samsung sticks. After a reboot, everything worked beautifully for about 6 minutes. The identified computer sticks again and showed me a full 12 GB available. Which was great, since Yosemite + a few browser windows and Spotify only lasts up to 3GB. I have enough to spare. However, it restarted and again and again and again.

I decided to test only the new RAM and started with the combination of Patriot 8 GB. It froze on reboot and fully started once, but it restarted less than 2 minutes later.

Result: now I'm back to the original combination of 2x2gb. Always deal with the lack of memory and without understanding what's wrong with the new RAM I bought at Fry's. What about compatibility? Is there an another specification? Of course, I know, there may be a malfunction of hardware, but I would like to address this issue before making another run to the store and risking another model or brand.

For reference: I've tried it before, but because of the lack of information from the seller, I was conquered by a stick of RAM 1x8GB, which is not supported by my model. So I replaced it with the 2 in question.

    Thanks for any help.

It is generally recommended to stick with quality RAM to buy from a seller that tests and ensures their RAM to work with Macs - the two most recommended are OWC (macsales.com) and Crucial. They both offer helps you determine which RAM you need and offer the lifetime warranty.

    http://eShop.MacSales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2010/DDR3_21.5_27

That should be your - sure.

I'll be back on the RAM for a refund.

  • What iMac 2010 OSX?

I received an iMac running OSX 10.6.4, 2010, but I would like to move to a better operating system (with the AppStore, photos, etc.)

What OSX would you recommend for an iMac 2010?

Processor: Intel Core i5 at 2.8 GHz

    Memory: 12GV 1333 MHz DDR3

    Thank you!

The available system update only is El Capitan. It requires 10.6.8 (you can upgrade to this version) and an iMac 2007 or newer.

OS X El Capitan - technical specifications

How much memory you have installed?  It is strongly recommended that for the older iMacs use at least 8 GB of memory.  If you find new bars of memory get them at Crucial.com.  Price of modules will not work even if they state that they meet specifications.

After you apply the Mac OS X 10.6.8 v1.1 updated Combo go to the App Store and download and install El Capitan.  Be sure to have a recent copy of your hard drive before you start the upgrade.

What is the best SSD for use in the Ultrabay caddy in a Thinkpad T420?

    Welcome to the forum!

Any standard 2.5 "7mm or 9.5 mm SSD should work. I'd stick with brands such as Crucial, Samsung or Intel and are looking for the cost lowest to higher capacity. Considering that the T420 is now several years old, that I doubt that go with the SSD that has specifications "faster" will make a difference in practice.

BTW the Ultrabay works at speeds of SATA-III (6 Gb/s), so it shouldn't be a bottleneck compared to the internal drive Bay.
