  Here are my steps:

  1. With the help of Notes in OS X 10.11.5, click Edit/spelling and grammar and then clearly the 2 options "check spelling as you type" and "automatically correct spelling."

  (1) in a new tab, type or paste Subject: config in the address bar and press enter/return. Click on the button promising to be careful.

  (2) in the search above the list box, type or paste SPEL and make a pause so that the list is filtered

  (3) double-click the layout.spellcheckDefault preference and change 1-2 spell check single-line controls as well as controls the multiline.

  Note: This should turn the spell checking on by default, but sites can always turn off.

  Older versions of mail were good. New version seems quite willing that the spell checker auto correction required, and without no spelling correction at all.

  It is a nightmare for dyslexics, we want to underscore red (as in this box here) to inform that we'll type wrongly, but we don't want EVER a word randomly mortise in where we can see it happened. Good spelling, AutoCorrect absolute nightmare with emails going to full of gibberish characters.

  PS Can not update my details: now on El Cap 11.6

  System Preferences > keyboard > text tab > uncheck: automatically fix spelling.

  It is a systemic framework.

  I added a Spanish dictionary for firefox that I sometimes email Spanish-speaking. Since then, the spell checker has stuck to Spanish language by default whenever I restart the browser.
  As soon as I select English, it remains until I close the browser. But goes back to Spanish when I open a new window.
  I tried every setting I could find, and I also tried to remove and reinstall both languages via add dictionary.
  I am at a loss. Can anyone offer some advice?

  You can check the spellchecker.dictionary pref setting on the topic: config page and if the pref tells the user the value (in bold) and then try to reset via the context menu to the default value.

  You can open the topic: config page via the address bar.
  You can accept the warning and click on "I'll be careful" to continue.

  I did not facilitate audit fate that I followed the Menu, options, advanced, general instructions but no option to check spelling, I've updated to the latest version of thunderbird, but no spell check option. I checked the boxes in the composition, spelling, check spelling before sending, check spelling as you type, correction box appears but no words it contains.

• Firefox spell 37.0.2 is not running on this computer

  Spellcheck stopped working a few days ago on my Windows 7 desktop computer. I use the same version of Firefox on my Windows 7 laptop and spell check works normally on this machine. "Check my spelling as I type" is checked. I have used Firefox for many years and through many versions and never had this problem before.

  I use the English-language version UK of Firefox.

  When I visit the same sites on this computer using Internet Explorer, the spell checker works. This includes Outlook.com based web e-mail and many forum sites I frequent. No problem when you use Microsoft Outlook to my ISP e-mail or with MS Word.

  I have disabled many plug-ins that I use rarely, and this has no effect. I tried the option "Refresh Firefox" and then completely uninstalled Firefox and re - install a new copy on the Mozilla site and neither one of these options has corrected the problem.

  Have you installed the UK English spelling dictionary after doing the update and re-setup?

  Only the American English version comes with a spelling dictionary.

  You can also download a dictionary in the settings pane opened by the latter sense, but the link it provides is almost certainly open in Thunderbird. At some point, it of better with the right button and select 'Open in browser' and it will re - open in your default browser. From there, you can download. I would recommend you right click on the proposed link, use "Save as" and download it. You can then drag the file downloaded from the window modules modules of Thunderbird, or use the small button to the left of the search box in the window.

  I tried to contact turnitin.com about why check spelling doesn't seem to work on their site. They said that is not an option for their software, and it must be a Firefox problem I see more indications of faults spelling on reviews I have type in trials. Yet, my preferences are set to have spell checker. Is there a workaround or something I should activate?

  Might have already checked, but if you right-click in the area where you want Firefox to check spelling, the context menu list "check spelling" as an option? It does not always work. Also, on some versions of Firefox, you must select the dictionary in the language on the context menu items.
