boot from secondary drive after the failure of the primary

I have a desktop Dell XPS 8500 1,5 years.  Already, the motherboard had to be replaced.  and now the main internal hard drive hasn't apparently - according to the dell diagnostics.  When I got to the computer, I installed a secondary hard drive and set up a periodic back place... If all goes well, which worked all along.  My question is, what is the best way to recover?  I can't boot from the secondary drive... I guess there is no SYS file there and no Windows 7 installed there.  The only disc I can find from dell for this computer is Dell Drivers and Utilities disk.  I don't remember ever having a Windows 7 installation disc.  It is available for download at dell?

Hi Ajbuch,

The best way to recover the system is to install a new hard drive on which you can install Windows 7. You can not install Windows 7 on the second disk since you already have the files it contains. I have a link below a nice OS installation guide which includes instructions for the preparation of a disc to install Windows 7 from a downloadable file (or FlashDrive if you prefer).

Since your 8500 is quite recent, you can consider a SSD drive, which gives you great performance boost.

    Hi n m,

Boot you from the DVD to start the installation, or have you started the installation in the existing version of Windows?

I would like to know if you want to perform a new installation or an upgrade installation.

You can not install Windows on an unallocated partition, if you install vista on brand\fresh the new hard disk, you will need to create partitions on the hard disk.

Method 1:  Format the partition and then try to install Windows Vista.

Important: The applications on the computer and all data will be lost when you format (New Installation) of the partition.

Method 2: You can follow the steps mentioned in the article below

    Hello

Enter the BIOS settings and set its default value. Then try to boot up your laptop and check what happens. Also try to boot from CD/DVD installations. If the problem continues, I'm afraid there is a hardware problem devices such as HDD and ODD are not visible to the BIOS settings.

I assume it can be due to faulty hardware or faulty controller on the motherboard.

  • Music files are on a secondary hard drive, because the primary is unable to manage the size of the file?

I have a PC where a hard disk managed programs and a secondary antibody which was for storing files. As I have almost 1 TB of music files, it's the simplest solution. Now the PC broke down and I'm moving to a new PC. Same configuration, but how to make iTunes recognize that the library is on the secondary? I put it in place so that the secondary drive is the home of the media, but I do not see the files that already exist in my library. Is there an easy way to connect them?

Never mind... after hours of searching, I thought about it.

  • Tecra A10 - 1 H 1: I can boot from extrnal drive is connected to ESATA

    Hello
I need to buy a new laptop. What I'm looking for is a laptop with an ESATA connector. And it must be possible to boot from an external drive connected to the ESATA connector.

I found the Tecra A10 - 1 H 1. The specification seems perfectly for me. But I cannont find information, it is possible to boot from a drive connected to the ESATA connector. Does anyone know if this is possible?

    Concerning
    Norbert Ruessmann

    Hello

A friend told Tecra A10 and he said that he of a notebook of big business, it seems, he is very satisfied with this laptop. :)

I asked him about the startup eSATA option and he told me that it of not possible to start from eSATA, but you can boot from a USB storage device. I put t know why you want to start from eSATA, but if you want to boot from your external HARD drive you can connect via the USB port for example. It should work.

Furthermore, system dual-boot (for example, XP and Vista) is also possible and you n t need a external HARD drive or second for that.

  • W510: How do I access my data from a failed hard drive after the failure of the motherboard

I made a mistake and has paid for major .

This error pouring a drink sweet on my laptop. I know, I know, my keyboard can and protect against damage caused by the spill, but it was a drink together. In any case, I panicked and shut down the system and it has upset and removed the keyboard. And be the impatient person that I am, I made what was probably the ultimate error. I do not give everything save a sufficient amount of time to dry and I tried to boot the system. There is my computer. Or at least I think.

Symptoms: It began at the start, kept a beep, sometime just close and will start.

In any case, I guess that my laptop went kaput. Now to the point of this thread. I had not been a recent backup and can't remember when the last backup was actually made. Assuming that my hard drive is ok, I want to get all my data, so I saw several options:

-Send the system to a data recovery service where I will not pay less than $300, but probably 2 to 3 times what

-buy an equivalent model laptop and put the HARD drive in there

-by an external SATA hard drive enclosure and mount it via USB on another computer

I bought a box external and assembled this evening. I had read about the data access of difficulty with a system non-Lenovo because of encryption of the data. I proved that by linking it to my work (a Dell) laptop and I couldn't access my data directories. If I have access to an another Lenovo Thinkpad, I'll be able to access the data if connected via USB? I had read that I can access the contents of disc hard if it is connected to an another Thinkpad, but I knew not that if it means that I have it connected via SATA connection or if there is work through the USB port.

I'll appreciate any suggestions for accessing my data.

    Best regards!

    All,

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I was able to recover my computer and all data on it.

Just to describe what I have done, here are the details.

Because of my concern about a failure of the motherboard, I bought a used/given new keyboard and an external SATA drive enclosure. I was not able to properly take possession of the car from my other laptop, but I was able to access the data in Mode without failure. With my data, I plugged the hard drive and the new keyboard in and started without problem.

    Thanks again,

  • X200T not boot from any device after updating the Bios v3.00

    Hello

I recently updated my bios to the latest version, the v3.00 X200T and now it does not start from any device - everything I get a blank screen after the initial bios starts upward.

The bios seems functional and it recognizes all the devices I attached, as well as the internal hard drive. However no matter how to start the machine it does not start. I tried to set the boot order in the bios, using F12, F11 for recovery, remove the internal HARD disk, used all the USB ports, etc... -all I get is a blank screen after the initial splash screen.

No beeps to indicate any problems, and I tried to reset the default settings of the bios, remove battery & power - all to nothing does not.

    Any ideas?

I updated the bios of many laptops and desktop computers in the past, but this is a new one on me...

    I hope someone can help.

    Darren

It seems that it also happens to X 200 owners who upgrade to version 3.01 of the Bios.

mc2sgp has posted a response in this forum that worked for me:

"I have the same problem and found the way to a temporary solution."  Go into the BIOS (you should always be able to press F1 to go into the BIOS) and go to Config-> CPU Intel VT - d characteristic of-> and disable it.  You should now be able to start normally in your operating system. "

At least, I can now start my camera.

    Hope this helps others.

    Darren

ADMIN edit: tagging this post as the solution to guide others to the bypass.  Lenovo will remove the BIOS on the web and replace it with an updated version that resolves these symptoms as quickly as possible.

  • can of boot from hard drive (bootable on Dell 8500) on Dell 8700

My XPS 8500 had a problem of MB/CPU, then bought a new 8700, but when I move the 8500-hard disks (good) 8700, but 8700 can't see the OS on 8500 hard drives (Windows and Linux), can I configure 8700 BIOS to make the hard drive of 8500 bootable on 8700? If possible, how? Thank you.

8500 XPS BIOS is default of type "Legacy", while the XPS 8700 is default "UEFI".

You can try to change the BIOS on the XPS 8700 to inheritance (and/or the Legacy OPROM option). And you should probably disable Secure Boot too.

That said, the 2 systems have very different processors and chipsets, so you will not be able to boot from the old HDD without having to reinstall Windows.

Why don't you just try to install the old HDD as secondary in the XPS 8700 drive so player you can save your files? And then install all your Windows software on the new HARD drive that came in the XPS 8700?

  • Qosmio F60 - boot advanced options existing after the new installation of the OS

    Hello

I wonder about the option of advanced boot when pressing F8 after that restart the computer will no longer exist if I changed the operating system that was initially provided with my laptop Qosmio F60 "win7" to win 8.1 example

Advanced Start menu which was part of the in Windows 7 system isn't available in Windows 8/8.1 System.
Microsoft has changed the architecture of the Windows system in 8 Win/8.1 news and this menu has been replaced.

Usually if the Windows 8 or 8.1 Windows would not initialize correctly, the system tries to fix the problem automatically. If the system will not be able to fix the problem automatically, the troubleshooting menu appear.

If you want to manually access menu, you must do this within the system:
You must open the charm bar (win key + C) then settings-> settings change PC-> update and Recovery-> Recovery-> advanced boot-> restart now

    Hello Stefen

As far as I know that it is not possible to boot from the external HARD disk drive. It is not supported in the BIOS.

I'm not sure of the USB but I saw a short period in the electronic store that memory USB sticks with description Bootable. I have one and I can't give you a good answer to your question.

    Good luck!

You on the right, the BIOS supports a boot from the USB FDD.
BUT it is not possible to boot from the USB HARD drive or USB key

The BIOS offers these startup options:
