This means the VM (vmx) configuration file has to point at the last instant vmdk rather than at the base vmdk. When you add a virtual disk existing using the GUI, you cannot select the instant vmdk. What you need to do in this case, is to add the vmdk from parent and that - before starting the VM - edit the vmx file and replace the reference to the virtual disk with the last snapshot vmdk. After changing the vmx file, please reboot the virtual machine (remove inventory + add to inventory).
