Restore to factory state out of the box. Can I install all updates from Microsoft using Windows update or can I install antivirus first before to connect to internet?

Currently Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 x 86 (no patches since 2008). Currently, it has no AV and has not been connected to the internet yet. It will be behind a router.

I had to redo the factory already reset after be connected to the net for 20 minutes and then a bunch of programs kept crashing saying Data Execution Prevention had to close the program StackHash and BEX error when executing update for HP drivers.

Maybe I installed Kaspersky first next time?

    What should I do?

No problem. Install the updates. You can install the anti-virus later.

  • Can I delete file update.exe in C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig

    Hello

I need more space in the C drive, and I find that under C:\WINDOWS\, the $hf_mig folder contains 170 + subfolders that 515 MB of space and each those subfolder contains update.exe. Remove the update.exe file in these subfolders under C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig?

    Please advise me.
    With many thanks,.
    Ying

Don't NOT delete the folder $ $hf_mig or its content.

When a critical security patch update, update, update rollup, driver or a feature pack installs GDR version files, the hotfix files are also copied to the folder % windir%\$hf_mig$. This supports migration to the appropriate files if you install a hotfix or a service pack that includes earlier versions of these files later.

    FYI -.

Folders that have uninstall as part of the name (for example $NtUninstallKB282010$ who reside in C:\windows (hidden files) are window Hot difficulty updating folders/files) can be removed safely (providing ever, you wish to uninstall the updates). I recommend you leave these records for a period of at least one month to make sure that the update works correctly.

These updates can be removed individually or together. To learn more about the update/s go on:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/xxxxxx
NB: XXXXXX = the actual number, not to mention the "Q" or "Ko."

Once you have removed the uninstall folders/files, then go to control panel, add/remove programs. Select the title of the corresponding Windows fix on the folder/file of the patch you just deleted, and select Delete. You will get a Windows error. This is because you deleted the uninstall folder/files. Simply choose OK and the entry will be removed from the Add/Remove Programs list.

Repeat once again, do NOT delete the folder $ $hf_mig

  • Satellite A110-178 - updated from XP to Windows 7

    Hello

I have a Satellite A110-178 and I would improve my OS from Windows XP to Windows 7.
I've never installed new drivers or a new BIOS on my laptop, so I guess that many of them are outdated.

    What's the smartest thing?
Update drivers and/or BIOS before upgrading to Windows 7? Or install Windows 7 and install the necessary drivers later?

In the event that the BIOS should be updated: as there is no BIOS update available for Windows 7, what version of BIOS is the right one to pick?

    Thanks for the info!

    Kind regards
    Oliver

    Hi Oliver,.

First of all an upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 isn't possible of t. This means you need to do a new clean install and after that, you can install all drivers.

An upgrade to Windows 7 is possible in Vista but not XP.

The update of the BIOS is normally not necessary. This update should be carried out only if it of really necessary.

    Hello

We do not know if your machine is compatible with 8.1.

Follow these steps before you upgrade (clean install) to Windows 8.1.

Check if the manufacturer of your computer/laptop has Windows 8.1 drivers available for your model.

If this is not available, Windows 8.1 not install and work properly for you.

  • Invalid # license when upgrading from vista to windows 7 using hp W7 Home Prem upgrade disc

    Hello

I bought your desktop at the end of Vista so I got a free upgrade to Windows 7, which made me send HP.

However, until the last days vista was work fine.  When he had problems, rather than research the issue, I finally used Windows 7 Home premium upgrade disk from HP that I got for free weeks after I bought my computer.

The upgrade went very WELL!  Until the end when W7 asked me my license number.  I entered the license number of Vista (which is the only one I have ever had - I have not received a license # with the upgrade).  Window 7 crossed the verifcation license and told me that my license number was invalid.

I tried to discuss with HP, but the site won't let me that my computer is no longer under warranty.

How can I go about solving this problem?  I have to call HP and get a license number or what?
