Can I delete individual files in a backup of Windows 7?

Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to delete individual files from a backup. I like to keep my backups tidy and get rid of files that I would need is more if I need to restore.

Thank you
Mike

Hi Mike,.

First of all, it can normally be done, but it's not simple (and much more complicated/difficult {to the point where some people will say "no, it cannot be done"} if it is an image backup full rather than a full backup; and even with a full, more complicated backup but just more effort if differential backups indivdual also play a role, since you may need to check each of them also).

That said, the answer will also depend on what you used as backup destination.  If it was and external HARD disk or a separate internal HDD or a network location, then you will probably be OK.  If you used a set of DVD or CD, it of extraordinarily difficult or, if the drives are not the RW types (but guys R), impossible (since you cannot make changes to them once they are written).

See this thread to see if it helps: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/delete-individual-files-from-a-backup/5dbbe219-e062-4a11-9d87-a8ec26d97174.  Don't forget to use Browse for the files, as you see not individual files with browse for folders.

If this does not help, then I recommend research and/or validation of help in the TechNet Forum dedicated specifically to the problems of backup here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/.

In my case, since I the backups periodicals full image as well as weekly full backups (with daily differential backups) AND maintain multiple copies as "backup backups' so to speak, it would be even more complicated.  If I felt the need to do (but I don't see a good reason, it would be NECESSARY that desperately and leave just the time to cure the problem), I would probably remove the file from the system and just launch a new series of backups that although a lot of time, maybe more simple in the end.

Good luck!

  • How can I delete a file from my backup/archiving?

    I am new to computers and I'm still trying to understand a lot of what happens, I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with OS Vista Home Premium on a 64-bit platform. I downloaded a program to open an attachment, I received in an email, only to find out that I had to pay for it so I uninstalled when I did that he left behind a pop up that starts with the startup program, it tells me that there is a problem with the installation and to reorganize. I went to the boot file on all programs at the start of the menu found and deleted, but the next time I start the computer the pop showed once again. I went back to the file and there are still and removed the more I found it in other programs, including my C drive, I deleted all the and the next time I start the computer of pop showed once again. I went to the boot again file and this is once again so I removed it, while he was in the trash, I clkd on the properties and I found a box saying archives with a mark of chk in the box. Guess the file itself is the reproduction in the archives and the archives are backup is I? So, how in my backup file to find the file for the pop up and remove? If I can, I went through several books I have on computers but there is no explanation and I tried the computer but I can't find any specific information that will help. I sent several different security screens through the computer and it did not pop up (called cure pilot) (using Norton, Superantispyware, and Microsoft Security Essentials) so I don't think it is malware and my computer is not having more or less problems than what she normally. If I can't dig the file and delete any other ideas on what to do with it? I'll download CC Cleaner and try it. Thanks for any help.

  • Can I recover individual files from a backup drive

    I just did a system restore and have reloaded my applications.  Before proceeding with the recovery of the system, I did a backup of my data files on DVD individual using the HP Wizard.  I would now like to restore SOME of these data files, but not all.  Is this possible?  My OS is Windows7.

    Thanks for the reply Dokie, I called HP for the following tips but you cannot see the individual files to cut and paste just to display the contents of the DVD (or USB stick).

    You must restore each drive but save it on the desktop under a new directory name.  The path will be saved so you can then see which ones you want to cut and past to their location within your individual applications.  Thanks again.  Dcubed

  • Can I delete the files

    IM my Toshiba A80 there are four files in C:\ driver:

    I386 with 455Mb;
    SUPPORT with 12, 9 MB;
    VALLUEADD with 10.8 MB:
    TOOLSCD with 458 MB.

    I think that these files are windows xp family (backup) CD. Can I delete these files?

    Hello

    In my opinion, you should leave these files. If you n t need Tools CD you can remove it, but in my opinion, you should burn all the tools on CD before you delete it. It may happen that you need the tools later.

    Start please help Toshiba and under protection and Fix, you can find an option Create CD drivers and tools. This option allows you to create an external backup of the drivers support.

    How can I delete a file on my iOS device that I downloaded from my iCloud? I just want to keep the Preview on my iOS device without using my storage iOS for the entire file. This means that the file is still in the iCloud and available to be downloaded to any device.

    In practice, I want to be able to scan and download through my documents located in my iCloud and once I didn't need them on my iOS device I would like 'load their return to the cloud' to my storage of the iOS device is not used.

    The only way I found to do that once a file has been downloaded is to remove it and add it again through either from Finder on Mac or iCloud.com.

  • How can I delete a file in use by demon updater?

    How can I delete a file that says it's in use by Daemon updater.exe?

    I have a computer with a hard drive of GB 914, who recently said that it is impossible to install a program because the disk is full. While they inspected, I found that it only reported about 200 GB of usage and after you remove files non-essential, I released 57 GB of disk space.

    I made sure to show all files and installed a file tree Locator and found a log of 684 GB file but when I tried to remove it, it said that the file was not in the specified location. Then I manually found the file in system32 tree and he said that it is impossible to delete the file because it is used by daemonupdater.exe.

    can anyone help please?

    Credonem, welcome to the forum.

    I suggest start safe mode to see if that helps with your problem.  Safe mode starts only the drivers and programs needed.

    Please, click on "Thumbs Up +" if I helped you and click "Accept as Solution" If your problem is resolved.

    It is not uncommon that many programs badly written to leave directories behind when you uninstall the.

    If you have removed the Control Panel program;

    Remove the directory under Program Files.

    for example.

    You deleted the program has

    A directory is always; C:\Program Files\Program has
