Can I switch from XP to Vista to extend protection for my PC beyond April?

Ends support for Windows XP in April 2014.  Is it possible to upgrade my PC from XP to Vista (rather than Windows 7 or 8), in order to extend the life of my machine? I don't think that my PC could not support Windows 7 and in any case, I have to do a clean install and lose all my programs. I don't want to buy a new machine, but as Windows 7 seems to have a limited life span and I hate Windows 8. I'll wait for Windows 9. If I upgrade to Vista, where I'd get the installation disk of? And no idea when will end in support of Vista?
