  You can either uninstall Lightroom 4 before or after installing Lightroom 5. Uninstall does not remove the 4 Lightroom Catalog. The catalog is a user file and will remain. When you decide to uninstall Lightroom 4 you will use the procedure standard for what ever operating system you are using. You install 5 Lightroom as install you any other program; by running the installation program. Note that since you have a student version that you must follow the instructions on the card in the box in order to get the serial number to enable Lightroom on your computer.

  All the work you do in LR is registered in the catalogue (which is not affected by the uninstall), so you must create a new catalog if you want to start. (File > new)

  To get photos from folders on your computer in LR, you must import the - LR is not like a file browser that you can point to a folder and see the contents.
