Can I use a Win7 upgrade version to do a clean install?

Hello world

I have Vista 64 bit on a desktop computer and want to upgrade to Win7 64-bit, the arrival of my version of the software upgrade.  It seems that the experts agree most do a clean install is the way to go.  My question is, if I backup my computer and reformat, I'll be able to install the new operating system on the Win7 upgrade disk or if it will not have recognized that Vista was still there and not install?  In this case, do I need to buy a full version of Win7 instead... even if I replace a Vista license with the clean install?

Any idea would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Yes, you can perform a clean installation with the Windows 7 upgrade version. Just start on the Windows Vista desktop, insert the Windows 7 DVD click "install now". When the menu appears, select custom (advanced option) to a clean install procedure.
