I then went to updates in the app store. Mavericks and El Capitan have been listed. I've tried both but got the same message:

  I can't believe there is a problem with the app store, so does anyone have an idea what could be wrong?

  The only way to install an ipad app is through the app store.  PC or Mac software does not run on the ipad.  Search in the contacts link at the bottom right of this page.  Give apple a call.
