Can't empty trash in El Capitan

Hello!

I deleted a user account from my MacBook. That's happened. But the procedure left some files on my drive. I moved to the trash. When I try to empty the trash, I get the following error codes: "the operation cannot be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code - 50)" and "the operation cannot be completed because the item 'ELEMENT NAME' is in use. Just run DiskWarrior 5 of the external drive, and my internal drive Macintosh HD should be ok.

But in practice, I now 20 empty folders in the trash and I can't delete them. Otherwise, the computer works normally. But because of this, whenever I want to empty my trash, I need to click with the mouse 20 extra time! DOH... The size of each file is 0K.

I have talked with Apple Support and tried several tricks to console, no help. Their advice was to manually copy all the files I need to external disk and then format the whole Macintosh HD and re-install the operating system. I wouldn't go that far, if there is always something more that I could try before that. Any suggestions?

Please, open the Recycle Bin and select the items that you cannot delete. Make a right click or Ctrl-click. In the context menu, select

Delete immediately...

Confirm when prompted.

  • How can I empty trash 'Genius '?

10.7.5, old 32-bit Macbook Pro OSX.

The Genius bar went yesterday to resolve a problem.  During which, the genius deleted all my music, photos and movies by being connected with a disc of Triage and the magic Apple Genius ID.  He stopped at the command "Empty trash" because he took long (approx. 300 GB of data).  Now, my drive is missing that much space.

Any ideas how can I empty the Recycle Bin or restore these files?  (Short to return to the Apple store?)

    Thanks in advance...

You have a backup, if so what kind? It may be interesting to restore if you have a recent backup. Otherwise I would like to backup now if you have a spare drive to use-

even in this State. At least you have a copy if it fails to restore the Recycle Bin.

Have what problem you tried to bring to the store? I have to wonder if start over again with a fresh install is a better option?

It is possible to "put the files"...

Select an item in the Recycle Bin, right click (or use ctrl + click). In the menu that appears, select 'Put back'. It may not be an option (I don't remember which version added this feature, I think that it was 10.6).

It is available "back" may not restore all the files and some files may already have been recreated in the old location (existing preferences for example).

I fear this is can be a messy situation to fix.

It might be easier to restore files from a different user account, where the need for a backup. If you don't know consider the Apple store again for help, but I guess that this situation is a bit difficult for you.

See if others here have a better idea too, it is better not to act too quickly in situations like this, unless you have copies of the data on another.

  • Can't empty trash - error that the file is in use

I noticed a recent bug that seems to be the case with PDFs, I opened in preview. When I close the file (cmd + w), but not to leave the program overview and then remove the file, when I go to empty the trash, I get an error message that the operation cannot be completed because the file is always used. I am only able to empty the trash immediately after a restart. I wonder if there is a way to fix this error!

    Hello

You must restart your MacBook Pro and then try to empty your basket by selecting Finder (on top left) then select Empty trash from the menu drop-down.

If this does not work, try to repair your drive by following these instructions: disk utility (Yosemite): a repair disc

  • can't empty the Trash because of locked elements and certain permissions

I want to well to empty the trash, but am getting blocked by two numbers, starting with:

    (1) ''there are some elements locked in the trash. " Do you want to remove all items, including those locked or just unlocked items? »

Unlike previous messages or suggestions on the support Forum, this text box does not actually identify the locked objects, not their names, places or anything like that. Similarly, when I press Option with Secure Empty Trash, it scatters only my Finder window such that I can not select anything.

I have browsed through the trash looking for ASCII files or other weird characters and have removed these (created a new folder on the desktop), but this has not changed anything.  When I try to Secure Empty Trash again, the same note appears.

I tried the two options offered by this text box ('Remove all items' or 'Remove Unocked items'), but regardless of my choice, the following text is displayed:

    (2) the operation cannot be performed because you have not granted access to some of the elements. »

I guess that brings me to permissions, but given that the article "troubleshooting permissions in Mac OS X - Apple support issues" has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple (from Jan 2016), I'm hoping to get information updated here.

You're not supposed to be access the recovery partition or copying what anyone, unless you go actually to recover the PC as long as you plant. -ignore the msg.

In the system properties > System Protection disable protection for the D drive

BTW have you created your recovery disks, using the process described by the manufacturer of your PC, if you you do not need to do that now!
