  Try a clean boot (Vista and W7) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit at the origin of the problem. Follow the procedures described in the article. Once found, remove, delete, disable or uninstall. Once don't forget to reset your system back to the normal state, as described in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal and reboot - this solution will not work.   You should get your software driver from your computer or hardware manufacturer, not through Windows Update (with the exception of updates from Microsoft Hardware).

  Access the site on your computer or hardware manufacturer > Driver and Software Support Section > search your computer or hardware model number > then your operating system > locate the correct drivers > download and install.

  I have Windows Vista Ultimate installed (by default) in my laptop. As you know, Vista comes with a lot of errors and a huge amount of compatibility issues. But I am not able to find any BIOS drivers and devices on the laptop, so I can't install XP in another partition (my drivers are supplied with a "restore CD" which installs Windows Vista as well).
