Cannot access the WebUI

I have a v3 WRE54G I try to connect to my wireless network.  I have updated the firmware and I am able to get to the configuration of the Web user interface screen (connected by ethernet to my laptop cable and using 192.168.1.240). The problem is that if I select any tab, such as the password or help, or make changes to the information, I am unable to reconnect to the user interface. When I run a scan of all active IP addys 192.168.1.240 is inactive.  After you have reset the RE, I am able to gete on-screen setup again, but the same thing happens again.

I'm puzzled.  Any suggestions?  Is the unit defective?

When you have connected WRE54G to your laptop have given a static IP address to your laptop. Before you make changes on the WRE54G delete all Cookies from your IE and press in and hold the reset for a minute button... Release the reset button... Unplug the router power cable, wait 1 minute and re-connect the power cable... Now re - configure your router...
