Cannot add a partition on my external hard drive

When you try to add a partition to my 'Seagate Expansion Drive' HD post, I get "Partition failed with the error: change the requested target disk size or a related disk is too small." Please, try another drive or partition, or make a bigger change. "OS 10.9.5

Here is the result of diskutil list:

/ dev/disk1

#: NAME SIZE TYPE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme * TB 5.0 disk1

1: EFI EFI 314,6 MB disk1s1

2: Apple_HFS CHS MacBook Pro 809,4 GB disk1s2

3: disk1s3 Apple_Boot Recovery 650.0 MB HD

4: Apple_HFS TB Seagate Expansion Drive 4.1 disk1s4

5: given Microsoft Basic W 61.4 GB disk1s5

Again, try to divide up to disk1s4 into two partitions. Various attempts to size of the new partition does not work. Thanks for your help!

In addition, the Windows partition will not rise. Any change in the partition scheme Gets the same error. I tried to delete the Windows partition to see if that was the issue.

  • How to join the partitions in an external hard drive?

I have an external hard drive. Empty, but divided into two partitions. (I see two drives)

How can I meet two partitions?

I tried using the disk utilities, but I got the message that I couldn't change the partitions.

(In Dutch: "Deze kan niet worden gewijzigd partitie"; in English, something like: "this partition is not editable")

What is the procedure that you follow?

    1. Select the disk in the sidebar that contains the partition you want to enlarge, then click on the Partition.

    2. in the list of available Partition, select the partition in the partition you want to enlarge, then click on remove.

The partition is immediately erased, leaving the space it occupied available.

    3. resize the partition by doing one of the following:

    • Drag the separators between the partitions in the list of available Partition.

    • Select a partition in the Partition layout list, and then enter a value in the size field.

    Hello

Seems that the external HARD disk drive cannot be recognized because of the driver problem.
What you could do to disconnect the USB of ALL devices and open Device Manager.
Then choose the display command, show hidden devices and uninstall all devices under USB controllers. Reboot the laptop.
After restarting again the operating system must install USB drivers again and you could test whether the external HARD drive can be connected as well.

I have goggled a bit and found a few interesting statement abut Cypress AT2LP RC58. It seems that the HARD drive is ok but sometimes the HARD drive cover and the interface connector would be malfunctions and so this problem would happen.

But these are only suggestions if you want to try for Cypress AT2LP RC58 goggle and see for yourself.

  • Using a Mac to partition a USB external hard drive to use to start Windows 7 on a PC

    Hello

My PC hard drive died recently, and I need to reinstall Windows 7. Fortunately, I have a Windows 7 .iso file on my Macbook Pro. I also have an external hard drive USB empty. I try to use the Mac (in particular the disk utility program) partition this hard drive and load the .iso file in it, with the intention to start the system and install Windows 7 on my PC. (NB. I have a new internal hard drive which I intend to install Windows on to, but it's something that I should be able to handle later and should not be relevant at the moment.)

As my DVD player also decided to break (I had not used for a long time), I can't burn the .iso to disk image file and start that way.

So my question is, what is actually in all possible ways to use my WD 500 GB external hard drive to boot Windows 7 from USB? If so, is it possible to configure the hard disk with the .iso image file using a mac? I think I need somehow do "bootable" my hard drive to boot from it, but I don't know how to do this using a mac, so that it will be compatible for Windows startup.

I've had this problem for days now and nothing I try seems to work - I tried what seems like all combinations of formatting, partitioning, extracting, BIOS-set-up-ing and file-system-change I can think of. Any help will be really appreciated. Also, if you need information such as specifications, just let me know and I will try to provide all the details I can.

In addition, I understand that there a lot of messages on the boot from external hard drives, but I looked carefully and found nothing for my situation (more precisely using a mac).

Thanks in advance for help; If all goes well there is something obvious that I'm missing that I can fix it easily.

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand you want to make bootable Windows 7 disk using Mac computer.

About a tool to burn an iso image on Mac, I suggest you contact apple support.

However, as a solution, I suggest to go to one of your friend who has the operating system windows download Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and burn the iso image.

Detailed suggestions are mentioned in the following article:

  • If I remove the permission to add back apps stored on external hard drive?

I'm selling my Mac. To help the sale, I wish I could say that it includes the iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) applications that I bought when new and Aperture 3.  I ask because I don't mean a buyer they will have access to these applications, if this isn't the case. I live in a country where it is expected that when you buy a used computer, it will come with the applications already installed. These 'options', even if they won't use, contribute to the resale value.

I backed up everything to an external hard drive for x - fer to my next computer, including the applications mentioned. If I scratch out / reformat the hard drive and then the new owner create their own Apple to download Yosemite or El Capitan ID (I'm in Mavericks now) I was able to connect my external drive for Mac, and then copy the apps on his Applications folder so that he would be able to use? I care is no longer using opening myself, having switched to Lightroom and I know that if it is possible these applications would no longer under my ID and that he would not be able to upgrade, but since I've paid for them, I would be able to transmit with the Mac without having to use my Apple ID of the to do.

Unless you have records of installation for these applications, you can not legally include.

This applies also to any OS you downloaded from the app store.

In all cases, licenses for the operating system and applications downloaded on the app store are valid only for the Apple ID used to obtain them, and they are not transferable. If you leave these applications or the operating system, the buyer will not be able to update or reinstall the OS without your ID Apple and your password.

Thus, you will need to completely erase the hard drive and you can then reinstall the original OS, the computer came with.

  • Cannot get Mac to recognize the external hard drive

try to get my CD on iTunes, bought a new external hard drive which worked flawlessly for 30 CD then nothing, iTunes does not seem to recognize when I put a CD in. Replaced the hard drive but no improvement.

I can always migrate songs of a laptop.

I'm confused. By "hard drive" do you mean "optical drive"?  I don't know how you get a CD to a hard drive.

Do you mean in your iTunes library?  iTunes is the application itself which opens libraries. You can't get a CD on/in/at the inside of/etc, iTunes.

  • Cannot start on USB 3.0 external hard drive?

I have created a startup disk, so much for my new Mac Pro 2013 and finally to put in my old Mac Pro silver tour 2012.

I did a clean install of El Capitan on an external HD. Nothing else on the subject. The Western Digital 2 TB Green is in a pregnant Sabre, connected to a USB 3.0 hub, which is connected to the new Mac Pro 2013. I tried a couple of different ways to select external HD and boot to it, but I keep priming in Macintosh HD SSD installed in the Mac Pro (2013).

I was wondering if the problem is the hub. Should the HD be connected directly to the Mac Pro?

Should the HD be connected directly to the Mac Pro?

    Yes, exactly.

The reason is that a USB Hub arrives too late to be seen at boot time, so the drive is not available to start from.

It is also a problem for the use of 'hang up the keys' at startup - beyond the hub keyboard is not visible at startup.

My little finger tells me to format the drive and start all over with him, but that will involve a lot of resources.
