Cannot add additional processors to a virtual machine.

I have a DELL PowerEdge R720 host running ESXi 5.5 1474528 and there are 3 VM.

I am using vCenter Server 5.5.0 Build 1476327 Essentials accessing via the web client of vSpere

40 logical processors

20 CPU X2.20 GHz

2 taken

10 carrots per socket

ALL of my virtual machines are windows X 64, version 10 hardware servers

4 CPU file server

RDS 4 CPU

Veeam DAS proxy server 1 CPU

I can not add any extra CPU on the third server. I can adjust the CPU count on the other two VM, but not the third.

License is

VMware vSphere Essentials 5 more (unlimited cores per processor)

Hi, have you tried downing the virtual machine and see if you can change the CPU then?

I'm running a few hosts in order to climb the same iSCSI data stores. The iSCSI LUN is visible and editable by all hosts. If Host1 is to map the iSCSI LUN (VMFS5) and a VM is powered, Host2 can add that VM to the inventory. It's possible with NFS iSCSI for a reason any. This is for a specific reason? Only when I turned off the virtual computer can I add it to both hosts. Other that just lock files are placed in the directory, I missed something related to the lock?

From now on, adding new esxi hosts does not allow me to add existing virtual machine, less than the voltage first. Once again, NFS does, iSCSI, this isn't. Any ideas?

It is not specific to ISCSI but rather to the use of VMFS. NFS has no awareness VM VMFS is and why it is not possible to do that with iSCSI / VMFS. There is a lock on the disk for each virtual machine of (race), and that's why the second host is not able to add this host to its inventory. With vSphere HA, this lock is released when a failover should occur.

  • Affinity processor for a virtual machine

I have a lot of CPU 8 on which I have installed ESX 3.5 U3. I also created a virtual machine Windows 2003 Server SP2 with 2 CPU is assigned to the.

I'm trying to set the processor affinity for this virtual machine to use 2 of my physical processors. I see now on the tab Advanced CPU, I am able to select all available 8 physics of the processor. So now I'm a bit confused regarding if VMware allows scaling of my machine virtual to use all 8 CPU when my virtual machine is only 2 CPU?

Now if the above is true, and I am to be allowed to set the affinity of the virtual machine to the all 8 CPU, then why is this maximum limit of the processor for a virtual machine is only 4? A stupid question probably but I'm really confused?  :|

    Hi confused,

Yes, the user interface is a bit confusing. As RParker said, basically what you are doing when you assign the processor affinity are to identify the nuclei on which the vCPU is eligible to run on. At no time will be the VM scheduled to be run on carrots than what there vCPUs, so he will never have access to a capacity more than expected.

The processor affinity is one of those features that's been around since 'the beginning' and its utility is really a bit blurred. I've heard of cases where users were running Citrix workloads configured with 2 vCPU and assigned the processor affinity for each virtual computer with the result of improving the performance. I wonder this because I never saw myself, and have a decent knowledge of how works the vmkernel Scheduler, it make much sense.

I would encourage you (and anyone else reading this) essentially forget that the processor affinity is an option. Use it can cause significant performance degradation (if, for example, you pin a VM through two nodes NUMA, rather than keep vCPUs all in the same node) and break features (VMotion, DRS and who knows what else in the future).

  • The former "cannot change the power state of virtual machine: the process has exited with an error: end of the error message" thing again (Fedora 8/Server 1.08)

OK, this problem beautifully undescriptive I've seen caused by what seems to be dozens of things happening for me.

I made the mistake of horrible update my FC8 kernel to the latest one (2.6.26.8 - 57.fc8).  Mind you, that's all that's changed.  It was with a 1.06 server with happiness and perfectly good computers running virtual in use before the upgrade.

After the new kernel and reboot, I had to rebuild vmmod.  I had to get a fix of any - any later that I used with my previous kernel (116 does not solve the problem of compiling) so I used all-any117d.  Update like a champion.

Try to turn on a VM and Ihanta!, the above error.

    Nothing else was changed.

I tried the upgrade to VMware Server 1.08.  Used all-new any117d - update OK.

    Error again.

I have re-run the compilation, this time to say 'yes' to what the installation script to "adjust the permissions of all virtual machines in xxxlist" or whatnot.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling v1.0.6 thru 1.0.8 with all 116 updates and 117d.   117D compiles with every version of server but when I try to turn on a virtual computer I get this error.

  • How can I add a data store as an additional drive for a virtual machine?

This is probably very simple, but honestly, I'm quite a n00b when it comes to networking and sys. Small business being at low cost...

OK, I have a HP DL360 G5 running ESXi 3.5 with 2 virtual computer management. The first is a cloned Win 2003 SME (I had to save the last days of server primarily was about to fail), the other is a Win XP VM (which is just share a single file to 6 users)

The server currently has 2 x 73 GB 10K SAS RAID 1. I installed another drive of 73GB 15K and seen in V: IC, I can add the storage, but how the VM of 2003 to see the new disk space? I need to be added as an extra, (e) disk in this case.

TBH I don't know even if I added the next Assistant in V: IC correctly except extra storage space.

    Any help will be appreciated

If the new drive has been formatted as VMFS3, then you can just change the settings of the virtual machine and add a disk.  Specify the new drive as the location for the new virtual hard disk.  You have two options on this screen.  Store with VM or specify the location.  You will need to specify the location.  Then, you can specify any size you want the new E reader to be.  Then in Windows, open disk management to complete the process.

This will be your easiest route.

  • How to add several records of existing virtual machines

Is it possible to add several drives in one shot to a virtual machine?

I know it's possible with the new - vm cmdlet, and if I manually modify the virtual machine, I can add as much as I want.

The cmdlet New-hard drive allows only 1 at a time, I can say.

    Any suggestions?

You are right, that the cmdlet New - hard drive allows the addition of 1 HDD at the time.

If you want to add several hard disks, you will need to use the ReconfigVM_Task method.

Can I go to the top by 1 vcpu giving each vm 3vcpus or would it be best to maintain an even number or go to 4?

It seems weird to go to 3. Will there be problems will 3 based on the processor of planning works etc? Here all the rules?

    Hello

Having 3 vcpu for a virtual machine is not a problem, and this is a valid configuration. The best practice is to mimic the underlying hardware so if you have 1x4core CPU, so for a virtual machine, I would go for 1 making virtual and 4 cores per socket and not 2 virtual socket with 2 cores per socket.

If you use the NUMBER system, it is best to configure the number of vCPUs be equal to or less than the number of physical cores on a single NUMA node, otherwise you will have higher memory latency

  • Cannot specify a directory for the Virtual Machine

I'm new to ESXi naked with me.  I added some records and then to browse the data store and I added the folders in there to specify the different VM..., I have a XP Win7 folder folder, etc.  When I go to create a new Virtual Machine gives me only the choice to select a data store to store the HARD drive and not the folder structure I created in the data store.  Now I can delete the virtual machine to inventory, return to 'Browse the data store' and move the files, and then add the VMX file in the inventory, but it just seems like a pain.  Am I missing something?  Really can not be complicated to arrange your virtual machines, it can?

Yes, you cannot specify a folder when you create a virtual computer to a data store.  I guess that he has not considered to organize things at this level and honestly.  Organization is really in the 'models and virtual computers '.

You have special characters in the directoryPassword? If so, you may need put it between quotation marks.

In addition, you can add - silent option for the command and the race, which will increase the order, without typing anything.

  • Cannot add USB controller to the virtual computer

We are trying to add a USB port to a virtual machine under ESXi 4 (free) material: it gives us the opportunity, said it can be added to this virtual machine, shows, she added to the list, but when I click on 'ok' final we get this error in a pop-up (Word for Word):

"There are not enough licenses to complete this operation.
' Hotplug not approved, required function have need.

Yes, that's exactly how the second line reads.

In ESXi 4, you must completely shut down the virtual machine before you can add the USB controller. It's a change of 3.5, enabling you to 'hotplug' material while the machine was still running.

In addition, you will probably be able to connect a USB device to a virtual machine. I have yet to find someone who has got this to work with the free license and no additional software. There are USB for IP devices that have been suggested for use with ESXi. If someone got the USB transfer to work on a box of vanilla ESXi, pleas ëlet me know. It would be quite beneficial.

  • The processor of the virtual machine statistics

How to change the script below to reach the underside of the elements, given

    1. when it collects the past 30 days stats it must ignore all measures on Saturday and Sunday.

    2. currently, he checks the monthCPUAvg of each virtual machine if it is greater than 80% and add it to $report, I need to check in the last 30 days (except sat and Sun) if the VM continued 80% usage for all 6 hours, if yes, then add to $report.

    $import = Get-VM
    $report = @()
    foreach ($vm in $import) {
        $Interval = "30"

  • Help: Cannot clone a snapshot for a virtual machine that is turned off

    Hi guys

I am currently using VMWare Workstation 10.0.3 build-1895310

(The latest available at the time of writing)

I want to create a clone of a snapshot.

The snapshot is on the two snapshots behind 'You are here' - the current state.

The computer virtual running windows server 2012.

The virtual machine is completely turned off.

(the virtual machine was turned off within the BONE, and no 'Power Off' option is available in the menu 'Power' after the OS is turned off, indicating (as far as I can tell) that the virtual machine is turned off completely)

However, when you try to create a clone of the snapshot, the dialog box indicates that the virtual machine must be fed first (which I think it is) before making a clone.

The only option available in the dialog box is "Cancel". (ie - the cloning process cannot continue)

The attached picture shows the dialog of Clone, indicating the issue - and behind it, the engine power VM off

(I'm trying to clone the snapshot "Installation")

In other words, I have a completely powered off power VM (as far as I know), but it is impossible to create a clone of a snapshot, as VMWare seems to think that it is always active, for some unknown reason...

Am I something wrong / missing something?

    Please advise...

    Thanks in advance

    James

    Welcome to the community,

the reason is that the virtual machine has been turned on at the time you created the snapshot. What you can do is to clone the virtual disk manually using the command line of vmware-vdiskmanager (using the snapshot required as the source hard) and then create a new virtual machine by using the virtual disk cloned rather than creating a new.
