Cannot increase the size of thin provisioned disk

Hello

I am currently using vSphere, and I have a server that I am trying to increase the space allocated 40 GB to 50 GB. The problem is the option to increase the provisioned size is grayed out and I can't seem to understand this.

I already checked to see if there is a snapshot, there are none.

I also checked that the drive is a scsi and NOT an IDE drive.

I'm fresh out of ideas and google searches return only guides on how to do what I've done, so any help is appreciated. Attached are the parameters of the hard disk, and the Snapshot Manager shears.

Welcome to the community,

According to the file name of the virtual disk in the first screenshot, the virtual computer runs on an active snapshot. The Snapshot Manager can not always show all snapshots, then take a look at the data store of the virtual machine to see if there are files... - 00000 x hard (snapshot).

To get rid of the snapshots, create a new snapshot and run "Delete All" since the Snapshot Manager to commit all the snapshots on the basic disk.

It should appear as a adjacent unused space on the disk that you want to resize.

    >... what I owe another utility to make for example a disk drive c right?

Open disk management, right-click on the c: drive (assuming that it is the only player you have) and select "Extend Volume... ». Then follow the steps in the "Wizard of Volume stretch ' to increase the size of your c: partition.

  • Cannot increase the size of VD

    Greetings fellow techies,

I have an XP VM (actually a model, but he converted to VM so I can change properties) on which I can't increase the size of the virtual disk. I tried a new virtual machine of the cloning and the new virtual machine won't let me not resize the disk. I do not have the shots on this bad boy and I am connected to vCenter w / full permissions so it's not the case either. I know there must be something very simple, I'm clearly dominant so I thought I have turn to you pro of for help.

I have attached a screenie but please do not hesitate to request additional information to better understand my scenario.

Thanks in advance for any help you can send my way.

IDE drive cannot be resized. the only way is to convert type SCSI, or using vmware converter to do a V2V clone and have the ability to change the size of the drive...

  • Increase the size of virtual hard disk to a virtual computer with snapshots

Is it possible to increase the size of a virtual hard disk on a virtual machine that has snapshots on this subject?  I can use VMware converter to increase the size of the disk, but who commits snapshots during the conversion-

    Thank you

As everybody said that it is not a good idea to increase the space for a VM with a snapshot.   The snapshot files are all related originally vmdk and when you change this vmdk he breaks the link.

A particular reason that you cannot commit the snapshot before adding the space.

  • Cannot increase the size of the volume of windows

    Hello

I increased the size of the volume in Dell EqualLogic Group Manager (GUI). On windows, I see that volume capacity is 200, but it does not increase the size of 200 GB. After scanning disk total size shows that only 100 and not any unallocated space available size. Is - this 2012 windows bug? don't know where to start troubleshooting. The server cluster connection is via iSCSI.

I see unreserved space EqualLogic, but not in windows,

    Thank you

    Hello

It * should * work, but it seems that perhaps services cluster prevents the operating system of new reading ability.  Could take a failover or even restart the cluster nodes so that it can see the new space.

If you have the support of MS, it would be worth a call to them as well.

  • Data store cannot increase the size

I have some data stores that I'm not able to increase the size of.  Increase button is just off hard.  Some other data warehouses, I am able to do it without problem.

All data warehouses are connected to the unit number logic on a NetApp via an iSCSI connection.  I increased the size on the side of NetApp, but this does not seem to matter.  In fact, he sees the extra space when I go into the properties of the data store.  All servers are running the same version being esxi 4.1.

Most data warehouses are 3.33 but I have some 3.46 versions, but on both versions, some may be increased and some may not.  I was hoping that was the problem...

The size of the data store varries.  Most of them have a block size of 1 MB.  None of the data warehouses are more than 500 GB.  Mostly between 300-400 GB.

So I'm a bit at a loss.  I tried to resize them using the vCenter server and goes straight to the server esxi itself.  None of that seems to matter.

Right now, I'm just at a loss.  I have not really found too much online about this problem.  A large number of documents to make errors trying to increase, but not a lot of increase being disabled.

    Thank you for your time.

  • Cannot increase the size of the virtual disk

I do this kind of maintenance all the time. Usually on Windows 2008 R2 servers where I can just go to the VM > settings > hard and develop it for my pleasure, and then add the space from the host 'to hot' without having to reload or use third-party tools 'boot' to develop (IE. GParted).

We run vSphere 5.0. The virtual machine for this case is a Win2k8 R2 64 bit on a host 4.1. Our warehouses are NFS volumes on NetApp storage infrastructure. It is now the question:

On the same data store, same OS (2 k 8 R2) I can change the settings on virtual machines to increase the disk space and the others, I can't. It is:

    • same data store (NFS - Yes, there is enough space to grow)
    • different hosts
    • same operating system
    • all of them are defined for Thin Provisioning
    • VMware tools are running and up to date

For some reason some VMS allow me to develop their hard drive (size available xxx.xxGB) and others do not grow (available s/o): click the arrows to increase the hard drive is greyed out.

    Ideas?

    Thank you!

    Alex

You can not. Unfortunately, it is not possible to resize a virtual disk with snapshots.

  • Increase the size of the disk in question VM

    Hi all

I would like to increase the size of a virtual disk in one of my virtual machines. The guest is Windows 2008 Standard. The disc, I want to express is currently 25GB. I would like to add an additional 50 GB. I increased the size of 75 GB using the vcenter server. When I go on the computer, virtual disk management, I was able to extend the drive and it shows as 75 GB, but under 'My computer', it shows that only 25 GB.

There is plenty of space on the LUN. There is no photos of the virtual machine. The disk is thick. All properties show the disk as 75 GB.

I don't really know where to go from here.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

    Dean

    Hello.

I've seen this before.  I usually add another 1 GB for the VMDK and repeat the process of extension in Windows to fix.  Not sure why it goes well.

    Good luck!

  • Increase the size of virtual disk Volume

If initially, I create a RAID10 array with four drives and install ESX3i, then later add two drives to increase the size of the RAID10 array, I can use the extra space for VMS ESX3i without erasing the data?

    Thank you!

    Bob HHSU

RAID10 on RAID5 due to performance. I 4x500Gb then RAID10 gives me about 1 TB usable, that should be enough space for a couple of years for my application

Okay, maybe that's true, but you are only working with a few axes.  RAID 10 in maybe 20 disks RAID 10 is perhaps better performance, but not big thing with only 2 pins.  If you don't have the space, very well.  I hope it works for you.

In addition, the machine has six spans and so I have the ability to add more than two readers and increase the table to about 1.5 TB. My dilemma is now maybe I should add plus two other readers from the beginning if ESX cannot cultivate virtual disks.

OK, then if you have disks now, why don't put you in now.  Even if you can grow the disk later, why re-work.  This seems really odd.  Do everything now and do it.  If you do not have to do it later.

VM the VMFS, correct? If I have too much space allocated to a virtual computer and he needs for another, I can reduce the allocation?

Yes, but again, it is more work.  Start small.  It is easier to add than SUBTRACT.  Start with only 50 GB, 100 GB.  OS file systems growth is much easier, the fight must convert a copy of the SAME virtual machine, which requires even more work...

  • Increase the size of the virtual disk.

I just installed Windows virtual PC on Windows 7 64 bit and I try to install a program of 6 GB.  He said that there is not enough memory.
The size of the virtual disk in less than 2 GB and I can't find any way to increase this size.  I tried to create a second virtual disk with more memory, but the same error comes back.  Is there a way I can increase the size of the primary virtual disk?

You can't do this with the tools built into Windows XP, but you can use third-party disk partitioning tools. Although these tools are generally safe, it is always a good idea to make backups before using an any of them.

Here are a few options in alphabetical order:

    Acronis Disk Director ($50)
    EASEUS Partition Manager free (free)
    O & O Partition Manager 3 ($50)

    Paragon Partition Manager
