cannot open files or programs with icons

Whenever I try to open files by using icons or shortcuts, I get the following message: System call failed. It has a title of explorer.exe on the box. I can't even get into Control Panel

Hi Steve,.

If you are using Vista, go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/22/reset-and-fix-broken-windows-vista-file-ext-and-type-associations-include-exe-com-sys-zip-lnk-folder-drive/ and scroll down to EXE and click or double-click it to run the program to restore EXE file associations.  Once done, do the same for LNK entry.  That should restore your programs.  If you use Windows 7, go to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html. If you are using XP, go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm.

Good luck.

When I try to open .exe files I get a message error that says "this file doesn't have a program associated with it for performing this action. Hello

I can't open the Captivate 4 with Captivate 8 program file.

I tried to open some projects I created with Captivate 4, but without success...

So much has changed between the versions. You need an intermediary

scratch, because the amendment process would take probably more time than

    recreating.

    Hi Robert K B,.

It seems that the file on your computer is corrupted, and the default program to open files is set to Adobe Reader.

Method 1: As a first step of troubleshooting, you can uninstall Adobe Reader and check if the file associations are defined by default.

    Method 2:
Once you uninstall Adobe on your computer, follow these steps to resolve the problem:

    a. Click Start, click Run, and type command

    b. type the following commands one by one:

    cd\windows
    Regedit

    c. If the Registry Editor opens successfully, then navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile-shell-open-command

    d. double-click the (default) value in the right pane.

    e. delete the current value data, and then type:

    "%1" %*
    (ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)

    f. navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe

    • In the right pane, set (default) exefile

    g. quit the registry editor.

    Check if this helps you.

  • Cannot open file in CS4 with plugins?

    Hi, hoping someone can help.

I try to open an Indesign file (I think it's a CS3 file) with CS4, but get this message:

    Could not open the file

Please update your plug-ins their versions the latest, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign.

    It lists about 15 plugins that are 'missing ';

    for example:

    PDF. InDesignPlugin

    FontManager

    Group

    Generic

    Table model

    etc etc.

Any ideas how to get around this so I can work on the doc?

    See you soon

    Jac

This error message means that you are trying to open a file that is newer than your copy of InDesign. So the file should almost be a CS5 file. Impossible to open a CS5 CS4; you have to open in CS5 and export a file IDML, you can then open in CS4.

There is an element of additional confusion here:

InDesign CS4 is actually 6 InDesign when you click Help-> about

InDesign CS2 is actually InDesign 4 when you click Help-> about

    and so on

However, it is not possible to see this error message when you open an older InDesign file in a more recent program.

  • Cannot open files Photoshop CS4 with Photoshop 7

Hi - I would be very grateful if someone has solved this problem before and can help me.

I try to send a relatively small (5 MB) file CMYK in Photoshop in layers of my version (CS4) to someone who is still using Photoshop 7, but they are totally unable to open it. I saved using "Maximize compatibility" and there are just 3 layers without layer fancy, no set of layer, effects, and each layer has a transparent background. Whenever someone tries to open it (via file-> open), their Photoshop crashes and to force quit. It will open in Graphic Converter but it is then saved as a flattened, image is not that good. I'm at my wits end what to do to get this to open in the PS7 - someone has any ideas?

    I'm using Photoshop CS4 on a Mac Pro, OS X 10.6.3; they use Photoshop 7 on a G4 867 DP, OS X 10.4.11.

    Thank you very much.

    Deb.

If someone else should encounter this kind of problem, here's the scoop:

This is a bug in the analysis of metadata in Photoshop 7 and CS/8 (version 3-6 no problem, version 9-12 without problem).  It is caused by the metadata of the history of the file, perhaps due to the length of history, perhaps because the bits of history about InDesign.  I don't have a Mac OS 10.1 available in the public system for Photoshop 7 debug more, so I can't be positive about the exact cause.  But we know that Photoshop CS2 and later works just fine.

If you wait 30 minutes, Photoshop 7 end by to load the file.  But that hurts productivity.

The metadata of the history can easily be removed in Photoshop (or ImageReady, Fireworks, etc.).  But if you copy layers to a new document, the metadata of the history will not be postponed.  Save the copy, and the copy will work fine Photoshop 7 and CS/8.

  • Error "cannot open file."

I have problems with Pages 5.6.1 on my MBP. Everytime I try and open a project, or save a new one, I get a "cannot open file" error. "

The files all work very well using iCloud web access and on another Mac and iPad but not on this one machine. Oddly, when I close the Pages and try to copy a file from disk to iCloud Pages on my Mac, I get the error message that says that the file is "updated".
I've not yet deactivated and reactivated Pages in the player iCloud in system preferences settings - I wonder if someone could suggest an alternative.

    Cannot open files

We do not have enough information about the problem to be able to give targeted aid.  What is an external USB drive?  You can see the files/folders through Windows Explorer?  You can access the properties of the files and you can validate that you (your user name) have permissions to open the files?  Can you copy, cut and paste the files in the desktop player?  You can move the files to another drive or to your main computer, and if you move them, they then open?  Were you ever able to open these files and, if so, what have you done since then that may have stopped that (changes in approval, changes to the user profile, installed software security of any kind,...)  Please answer these questions in a response do you (assuming that permissions instructions do not resolve your issue).

It may be a permissions problem.

To view your permissions, right-click on the file/folder, click Properties, and check the Security tab.  Check the permissions you have by clicking on your user name (or group of users).  Here are the types of permissions, you may have: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-are-permissions.  You must be an administrator or owner to change the permissions (and sometimes, being an administrator or even an owner is not sufficient - there are ways to block access (even if a smart administrator knows these ways and can move them - but usually should not because they did not have access, usually for a very good reason).)  Here's how to change the permissions of folder under Vista: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-vista/set-file-folder-permissions-vista/.

To resolve this problem with folders, appropriating the files or the drive (as an administrator) and give you all the rights.  Right-click on the folder/drive, click Properties, click the Security tab and click on advanced and then click the owner tab.  Click on edit, and then click the name of the person you want to give to the property (you may need to add if it is not there--or maybe yourself). If you want that it applies to subfolders and files in this folder/drive, then check the box to replace the owner of subcontainers and objects, and click OK.  Back and now there is a new owner for files and folders/player who can change the required permissions.  You can change now switched to read-only (even if the main folder indicates that they are always read-only - you can access yourself as the owner).  You can keep them in read-only to other users, customers and administrators even (although they can support themselves and access, if they wish, and it is really not that you can do to stop it except protect the file with a password by using a 3rd party product.)  Here is more information on the ownership of a file or a folder: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

    Hello

Was the HP works well before game console? If Yes, then do you remember any hardware/software changes, after which the problem started?

Method 1: I would say you put the computer to boot and then check if the problem is caused by any third-party application.

Note: After troubleshooting, be sure to set the computer to start as usual as mentioned in step 7 in the above article.
