Cannot open files or programs, error: Windows needs to know what program to use.
Original title: I can't open any programs.
Today, I tried to free up space for some games, I tried to download. In the Remove Programs process I must have learned something really important. Now, all of the icons on the desktop are white and I can't open anything. None of the programs, folders, files, photos. The pop up according to open this file, windows needs to know what program to use. It does give me an option to choose a program and I can't open my internet browser unless I have to go through some point average round through my control panel. If there is a way to solve this problem, it would be really useful. I think that the computer uses Windows Xp.Thank you

Cannot open file because Windows needs to know what program created the file
After downloading some files when I try to open the file, I get the message cannot open the file, windows needs to know what program created the file.
Any suggestions?
Perhaps no program has been assigned to this file format and so you cannot open these files.
I put t know which files you downloaded, but you can choose an application installed that can open these files.Right click the file and I have to then choose open with.
Then, you could choose the program you want to use.Best regards

Cannot open files (desktop programs) *.exe
When I try to open .exe files I get a message error that says "this file doesn't have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel. " I went to control panel > tools > folder options > file types and tried to put 'exe' to 'demand', but that doesn't seem to work. Funny enough, I am able to open other types of programs such as pictures, videos and files PDF and if I open a file html directly, I can open Firefox, but I can't open firefox.exe directly. I want to run an antivirus program or malware-check software, but of course, I can't open any .exe files.
I am running Windows XP SP3 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Before you answer, please note the specific language in my error message. I want to emphasize that this link does not solve my problem. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837334.

Cannot open the control panel, he is shooting back is unable to open the file in an adobe window and files are now marked with the adobe logo. System Restore does not help. I can always open internet but use printer ect. They also show adobe in the window... Then I get a WINDOWS saying search the Web for the program to open or browse. I'm exausted out everywhere is going to fix this problem with no result other than buying something that I know can be done without. Thank you Robert K b.
Hi Robert K B,.It seems that the file on your computer is corrupted, and the default program to open files is set to Adobe Reader.Method 1: As a first step of troubleshooting, you can uninstall Adobe Reader and check if the file associations are defined by default.Method 2:
Once you uninstall Adobe on your computer, follow these steps to resolve the problem:a. Click Start, click Run, and type command
b. type the following commands one by one:
cd\windows
Regeditc. If the Registry Editor opens successfully, then navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile-shell-open-command
d. double-click the (default) value in the right pane.
e. delete the current value data, and then type:
"%1" %*
(ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)f. navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
- In the right pane, set (default) exefile
g. quit the registry editor.
Check if this helps you.

cannot open files or programs with icons
Whenever I try to open files by using icons or shortcuts, I get the following message: System call failed. It has a title of explorer.exe on the box. I can't even get into Control Panel
Hi Steve,.
If you are using Vista, go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/22/reset-and-fix-broken-windows-vista-file-ext-and-type-associations-include-exe-com-sys-zip-lnk-folder-drive/ and scroll down to EXE and click or double-click it to run the program to restore EXE file associations. Once done, do the same for LNK entry. That should restore your programs. If you use Windows 7, go to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html. If you are using XP, go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm.
