  I found a strange behaviour. I have a Windows 2008 guest that I just copied in my new box ESXi. I am trying to create a snapshot before upgrading the guest to 2012 Windows operating system. The virtual machine has currently no snapshots. Whenever I have create a snapshot, he succeeds, but then I can't start the virtual machine saying that it does not find the vmdk file delta even though I see there in the data store.   Yes, for an ESXi host and target you must either select the ESX f.vmdk as format target (growable option is for VMware Workstation), or you must convert the virtual machine once more instead of simply upload the files to an ESXi host.

  I'm weirded out. When I try to start the unit on my VM, I get the following message:

  The Virtual Machine cannot be set to Unity mode because:
  -The VMWare authorization Service is not running.

  So, after a little checking, I realize that indeed, the authorization Service is not running on my host. I am trying to launch and get the following message (translated from the french, sorry):

  Event Viewer is a little more detailed... But not really useful:

  NONE of these error messages to display more than a few visits on Google, especially not in exact search (with quotes around the exact phrase) mode. I'm at a loss as to what I can operate the unit.

  If this does not help I suggest you reinstall workstation completely from your own account. Don't forget to note your serial number if your IT Department has already given it you.

  BTW, it might be that your group policy to prevent something. Check with your IT, if others have the same problem.

• Cannot start the VM, corrupted disk

  I can't start my VM. I get the error message "file not found: FSL_vm5_32.vmdk". I then navigate to the file, which is where it should be, select this option and keeps coming, same error.  Opening of the FSL_vm5_32.vmdk it seems ok. I pasted the files vmdk and vmx below. I noticed that the size of the hard disk is 0 bytes. If I click on the hard drive I get an error "the specified file is not a virtual disk.  So I tried to add a hard disk using an existing virtual drive and then got the same error that "the specified file is not a virtual disk.  Then I tried to import the virtual machine by using the source of other and selecting the VMX file. Which gives an error that it cannot determine the guest operating system.

  Looking for the log file, it appears that one of the files that make up the virtual disk cannot be read. I have posted the log below.

  Is it possible to repair this file or around?

  I am running VMware Workstation 6.5.2 build-156735 on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. The virtual machine is a Linux RedHat enterprise 5.

• Best practices for p2v - when to stop the physical machine?

  After you perform a p2v conversion, when should I stop the physical machine? By default, the virtual machine is turned off after the conversion and characterized by a DHCP address and not the static address that was on the physical machine... Why is this? Not the virtual machine is a duplicate... maybe it's a setting I'm missing the conversion.

  Looking for a better practice for the p2v conversion process.

  Hello and welcome to the forums.

  I tend to do the conversion and to choose to not to turn on the virtual machine later.  Once the conversion is completed, I make changes on the hardware as needed and then make sure that "Connect at Power On" is not checked in the device status of the NICs.  Now you can power up to the virtual machine and do what you need to do to prepare (uninstall the old software, change HALs, etc.) without fear of being on the network with the same name or IP address.  Once everything is good in Event Viewer, Device Manager, etc. - I shut down the physical server and then turn on the virtual machine with a "wired" network adapter to test.

  Another option would be to use the "Customize the identity of the virtual machine" option towards the end of the wizard import, if you need to be able to have the physical server and the virtual machine on the network at the same time.  This customization will give you virtual machine, a new name server and SID, and then you could just set it to a different IP address.

  I'm under LabView 7.0 (I know its an older configuration), with DSC and Lookout CPB to make periodic communications to an Omron plc. I needed to update the nor-DAQ because the PCI-6220 card needs the driver. I upgraded to NOR-DAQ 7.5 and now a get the cannot start the Service Manager memory shared DSC.   1 know if your AV (anti-virus) program is supposed to disable your Windows Firewall. Some do it.

  These error messages are a pain in the neck to extract useful information.

  I suggest that you do a search online 'pilot audio free downloads' and find another audio program for your PC.

  If you find something that works for your satisfaction - remove your original pain in neck audio software and make sure you make your audio program newly found the 'default' device.

  Realtek and NVIDIA, for example get stuff good free audio driver.

  If the new program does not work - it would be a good indication that you have hardware on your PC, drive problems and no amount of play more with to try to correct the audio software will help. Period
