Change the MTU on ESX host?

Hi all

We moved our ESX hosts on a network where the MTU should be 1400.

Can anyone validate commands to use to make this change for me?

I do both esxcfg-vswitch vSwitch0 m and ifconfig vswif0 mtu 1400 1400?

Is also a restart of the network necessary for this take effect?

Anything else I need to do?

Thank you.

all you need to do.

esxcfg-vswitch vSwitch0 -m 1400

Why 1400?  The default value is 1500

  • Change the password on a host

    Hello

    I just added a new host for my vCenter and it had the default password. I noticed a warning icon, and I don't see anywhere on vCenter to allow me to change the password. I know that sounds obvious, but surely vCenter will allow me to change the password on a host - have I missed an obvious option in the menu somewhere or I have to delete the host to vCenter and Add again once I changed it from the console?

    You cannot change passwords for ESX for vCenter. You must open a session to the ESX directly using the vSphere Client and change. All users passwords can be changed when the host is connected to the vCenetr without problem - just the vpxuser is not editable (the vCenter user uses to connect to the ESX host and have a random password that is stored on the database of vCenter).

  • Effects of the change of name of ESX host windows vcenter server sits

    I made a change to an ESX host name and now I can not connect to the windows server vcenter is sitting on.   The vcenter sitting Windows VM on the ESX.  Now, I can not ping or you connect to the windows server.   I tried to change the hostname to return but still cannot ping the virtual Windows machine, impossible to connect with the client of the infrastructure, cannot RDP to windows VM, etc..   Is there a way to fix what broke?   Thanks for the help.

    Have you tried to connect directly to the host ESX (with the vSphere Client) and change the configuration of the virtual machine and the host vCenter? How about using worms forward in DNS to get the new name to resolve the old names of servers? In this way, either name can be used to communicate with the same boxes/VM... I've done it before to other servers (not the virtual computer at the time) when we installed a new server to replace an older and got a name change (to follow the company standards). We had agents in place who wanted the old name of the server, in order to make adjustments in the system DNS has allowed these agents to connect to the new server and facilitated by the migration.

    In general, I leave the host names and only once built server names vCenter. The best time to change is when you install the fresh software/OS, not at a time later than in fact. It is a good policy to have all areas...

  • Change the MTU size to vmkernels on dvSwitch

    Hi all

    I have about 40 ESX hosts that belong to dvswitches different 6 and 6 different groups. Each host has 6 vmknics created for the dvswitch and all have value mtu of 1500. Can someone help me with a cli script to change all vmks 9000 MTU?

    Please let me know if additional information is required

    Thanks in advance.

    Try it like this.

    $MtuSize = 9000
    foreach($dvSw in (Get-VirtualSwitch -Distributed -Datacenter MyDC)){
      $dvSw.ExtensionData.Config.Host | %{
        $esx = Get-View $_.Config.Host    foreach($pnic in $_.Config.Backing.PnicSpec){
          $netSys = Get-View $esx.configManager.networkSystem      foreach($vnic in $netSys.NetworkConfig.Vnic | where {$_.Spec.DistributedVirtualPort}){
            $spec = [VMware.Vim.HostVirtualNicSpec]$vnic.spec        $spec.mtu = $MTUSize        $netSys.UpdateVirtualNic($vnic.Device,$spec)
          }
        }
      }
    }

    It will update the MTU value of each vnic connected to a dvSwitch

  • Jumbo frames, change the MTU size without VM guest tension

    I'm trying to disable jumbo frames, specifically to change the size of the mtu to 1500 (instead of 9000) in vcenter on some hosts. Some hosts run esxi 4.1, others are running esxi 5.0. I wonder if it is absolutely necessary to turn off the virtual machines that are connected to the iscsi san network while making this change, or is it relatively safe to make this change, while VMS are running.

    Each VM has active multipathing, 2 vswitches with 1 NIC associated with each.

    I know how to make the changes, regarding my questions whether it is possible to safely make changes while VMS still access the SAN.

    Yes, it is something that I do in my lab quite frequently without using maintenance mode. Memaad notes, maintenance mode is always preferable to avoid unnecessary risks, but it's finally to you.

    See you soon.

  • WRT110 - How to change the MTU setting?

  • How can I change the license to another host?

    Hello

    I am replacing a host, but cannot change the license to the new host.

    The ability to change the license on the vCenter (administration, licenses, manage vsphere licenses) appears dimmed (unavailable).

    All the licenses that I own are associated with former guests. I can't add new hosts because all licenses associated with the former hosts. I removed the host the vCenter, but the license is always affected.

    How can I change the license of a former host (which no longer use) by the new host?

    Thank you!

    As mentioned earlier, it should actually take a few minutes, so with the two days, you've already waited, there seems to be something wrong. Please take a look at KB VMware: vCenter Server 6.0 incorrectly states the amount of licenses in use by the ESXi host to see if this helps you to identify/solve the problem. In the case where you don't consider opening a case of pension with VMware.

  • Set the time of ESX host

    Hello

    before that I have to download free 5.6 OPs of the trial, I used OPs 5.0.3 (Free Trial) in your Docs is States:

    "Time of the ESX host and the vCenter Server must be synchronized.

    In the Configuration without any server NTP tab I put a time but when go to Putty and connect to the host, and write the command 'date', the time is different from what I put.

    1 - is this problem due to lack NTP server?

    2 is it possible that I put the analytical UI VM and VM timezone to my zone schedule without host adjustment? (is this true?) (Is it that enough, I just set time zone of PAHO)

    Please help me

    Hello

    You must set the parameters of your ESXi host NTP.

    There is no timezoned in ESXi I know.

    Make sure when you look through the settings of Date and time on the ESXI host right now is what should be based on your local time.

    Let the time vC Ops to UCT. That should ensure the VAPP have the same time as the ESXI host.

    When you start the TIME you can check the time on the virtual computer is the same as hosts yoru.

  • Change the IP address of host turned off...

    Hello

    I need to change the IP address of a host off the power.  I intend to connect a monitor and keyboard directly to the host and just change the IP address of the HOST vmware console.

    However how warn correctly my server vCenter on the host IP change without losing all the configuration changes and VMs... ?

    Thanks for the comments on this

    concerning the Tor

    If you are uncomfortable in SQL, you can change the dbo. Table VPX_HOST in vCenter to change the IPAddress field for what you want.

    Otherwise, turn on the host with the new IP address. Then vcenter, trying to reconnect (which will fail), after which you will be prompted to enter the username root and password to connect to the host. You can then use the new IP address.

    In addition, even without DNS, you can edit the file hosts on the vCenter server and use host names for servers to go forward in order to avoid this complication. Much simpler to edit a hosts file.

    Edit: Just for fun, I changed the IP address on a host laboratory while he was online and connected to vCenter, wherein he disconnected and then reconnected with the correct IP address. So, I guess it works too

  • Changing the configuration of DNS host ESXi

    Hello

    I need to update the DNS servers on our new servers wih ESXi hosts. replace the current two entries with two new IP addresses. I intend to do that via vCenter to host-> DNS and routing Configuration. What I have to restart the management network or ESXi host after making this change to avoid that it comes into force? The documentation seems to indicate that it does not require either:

    http://pubs.VMware.com/vSphere-4-ESXi-installable-vCenter/topic/com.VMware.vSphere.esxi_server_config.doc_41/esx_server_config/advanced_networking/t_change_the_dns_and_routing_configuration.html

    Does anyone have experience to make this change? You recommended placing the host in Maintenance Mode, first and move the virtual machines it would be?

    Thank you.

    Hello

    Thanks for the reply. Once I made the change is a way to confirm that the ESXi host actually uses the new correct DNS server?

    Nslookup should help you identify what DNS server is used

    Type nslookup hostname or ip

    [root@esx-server-1 /] # nslookup 192.168.0.5
    Server: 192.168.0.7
    Address: 192.168.0.7 #53

    name 5.0.168.192.in - addr.arpa = esx-Server - 2.domain.com.

    Is it OK to make the change with direct VM on the host?

    Yes

  • How to check for the ConnectionState of ESX hosts

    Hello

    I would like to be able to check the status of connection to a host list before executing a block of code against the list of hosts. If the host is in a disconnected state, I want also to write in a name csv file and connection status of any host that is disconnected before you run the code block against the rest of the hosts in the list.

    That's what I've tried so far:

    $ESX = "C:\Temp\host.txt".

    foreach ($vhost to $ESX)

    Get-VMHost $ESX | Select Name, ConnectionState
    If ($vhost. ConnectionState - eq 'offline') {}

    {
    $vhost | Export-CSV "C:\Temp\report.csv" - NoTypeInformation
    }
    }

    Thank you

    Try like this

    $ESX = "C:\Temp\host.txt".

    Get-VMHost-name $ESX |

    Where {$_.} ConnectionState - eq 'offline'} |

    Select Name, ConnectionState |

    Export-CSV "C:\Temp\report.csv" - NoTypeInformation

    } else {}
    "Write-Host $vmHost.Name, ' VirtualSWITCH:"$vswtch"MTU FAILURE 9000 value!. »
    }
    }

    Hello, padgettmic-

    That would be because of the way you create the variable $vmHosts.  It deploys a string that corresponds to the "vmhost1 vmhost2", not an array of two elements, "vmhost1" and "vmhost2".

    A way to make a table would be to use the Split() the String class method, such as:

    $vmHosts="vmhost1 vmhost2".Split(" ")

    then try your Foreach loop.  How does do for you?
