It should work as the only diff is the CPU only. After all, it is only from 4.0 to 4.1 only. for a safer approach, you can start ESXi 4.1U1 from a USB, switch off the current machine and see if it detects any hardware, if it does not work just restarting the existing 4.0 installation. check this: http://www.jonathanmedd.net/2011/01/install-esxi-4-1-from-a-usb-stick.html

• Update Server esxi

Hi all, I'm new to vmware.

I can see most of my esxi hosts are version 5.5 and few are with version 5.1.

How update 5.1 to 5.5.

I need to put in the mode of maintenance, and after that please guide me. If I put in maintenance mode the esxi host is removed from the cluster.

Screenshots would be appreciated.

2. I am using HP Proliant Servers. one of my server esxi does not support version 5.5 until I update its firmware. With the help of HP ILO I put firmware update, but I have to put in maintenance mode when I update the firmware on the server

Hello

1. download the required ESXi image.

2. Select the host required in the vCenter > Update Manager

3. click on view images Admin and click on ESXi

4 import image ESXi and navigate to the directory where is this image > download

5. the wizard asks you to provide a database name, to give a base name (for example, host_upgrade)

6. go back to the view of compliance and enter the host in maintenance mode. If the host is in maintenance mode, no VM must reside on it. The host be removed from the cluster when it is in maintenance mode.

7. click on join, and then select only this base line created containing 5.5 ESXi ISO

8. click on Scan, compliance status must come as non-compliant. If she starts as incompatible then restart this ESXi host and perform the analysis again

9. click on take and give a name to the task and keep the default values and complete the upgrade.

Two things here:

You must ensure that your ESXi 5.5 is supported on the hardware. You can use Vmware Hardware Compatibility List to verify that

VMware.com/go/HCl

Once the hardware is compatible for ESXi 5.5, then you can proceed to the update above.

In addition, you must put the host in maintenance during the firmware update mode.

I had done. It seems that if you have any software running on a computer backup, it is best to remove or disable. I also cleaned the registry with ccleaner. After all this, the converter has exported the disc in a VM ESXi without problem.

• Add a new table to the server ESXi 4.1

Hello

I try to add a new table on a server ESXi 4.1.0. Is it possible to build the table and add it without restarting the host? The server is an HP ML350 G5. I installed ESXi 4.1 on a hard drive, but I did not install HP driver packages. Is there something I could install from ESXi that would give me the features of configuration of the berries, etc. ?

Thanks for any help,

Stem

Although it is possible (but unsupported) to install tools RIAD on ESXi (see VMware experience before: how to run the CLI of the ACU online HP for Linux in ESXi 4.x) you might have to restart the host still. Reading messages earlier, it would be also better to add the new table by using the ACU (Array Configuration Utility) rather than the ORCA (Option ROM Configuration for arrays). Of these posts, it looks like ORCA could possibly reorganize RAID sets, resulting in a non bootable host.

• Specialization on a new server ESXi 5

I want to set up a new server ESXI 5.x for a customer and would like to clarify certain points, if you will allow me.

1 ESXI 5.x supports up to 32 GB of RAM, correct?

2. If I have a server with a processor image, I, from point of view of the ESXI, four CPU available is to allocate to the virtual methods, correct? And two quad-cores I'd have 8 CPU is to allocate to virtual methods?

With ESXI 4.1 I found work two logics CPU very well support a CPU heavily used on a new HP Server as long as my other virtual methods are virtual demand as storage of data or Symantec Antivirus servers servers, etc..

3. I asked earlier but it's not kosher to overallocate computer CPU? If I have a Quad Core processor and assign 8 Virtual CPU I overuse. Is it always a bad thing with 5.x?

Thank you very much for the friendly help continues I go out here.

The backup, you can certainly manually save or use in comments like Windows backup backup. I just wanted to talk because many people don't think that.

Regarding commissioning, it depends on the workload as I've mentioned before and also depends on how to configure the virtual machines. If you have a 4 core CPU and configure the virtual machines with 4 vCPUs you may soon face questions. However, if you configure the VM with 1 vCPU (or maybe two for individual virtual machines), it would be possible to run 10 virtual machines or more without problems. Everything that you, remember that the host must also some resources.

• Transfer of virtual machines from a server ESXi 3.5 to new ESXi 4.1 server. What is the procedure.

I read on how to transfer a virtual machine from one server to another using VMotion. Not 100% clear on the process again. What I see or read is when you do this since an ESXi 3.5 Server ESXi 4.1 server, I do not see any information on, if possible. In addition, I have not read if I need to convert or upgrade the virtual machine until I use it on the new server. So, my question is, are there any special instructions, conversion tools to convert a VM created 3.5 to use on the new Server 4.1? Is there a detailed procedure that I have not yet found or read best describes this process. Like I said up to now I'm not 100% clear on the procedure. Thank you.

ESX 3.5 VMs can run without modification on a host ESXi 4.1 - VMotion between the two hosts, you will stiil need to ensure CPU compatibility between the hosts.

Maybe it's the best guid for upfrading to vSphere - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_upgrade_guide.pdf

• Single server ESXi on CPU with > 6 hearts

Hello

As far I understand count max core for server ESXi (free edition) is 6. What happens if I install it on a box of HP DL385G7 with an AMD 6136 (8 cores) CPU? The installation will fail, or only 6 of the 8 cores will address work? The box is listed in the HCL. With the new range of G7 HP servers, it isn't an AMD based DL385 server processor that uses a processor with a basic under 8 account.

Thank you!

Julian.

> I don't think County processor or core are limited to free ESXi.

CPU do not count, but free ESXi is still limited to 6 hearts. It will work on 8 or 12 core processors, but use only 6 on each physical processor. 12 cores are only available for Advanced and Enterprise Plus.

• Need to remove a server ESXi

I have a test server ESXi who accompanies me through and want to install top W2K3. What can I install on W2K3 on ESXi or I have ESXi delete\remove first?

Delete all partitions with windows install and create one for NTFS. Of course, this will destroy all the ESX information you had on the machine.

• Configuration of Vlan SG300-20 for the desktop and server ESXi

Hello

I'm fairly new to network so please, be gentle. I'm setting up a number of VLANs for my lab at home.

I recently moved jobs and took an Oracle Apps of the Middleware & role has therefore need to start picking up the Apache, e-Business Suite, etc. of the load balancers so need to segragate my network to allow different configurations, I want to install in my lab ESXi.

My setup is detailed below:-

I have a router of dryatek 2860n which is my entry for the installation of the internet on IP 192.168.1.1

My Cisco switch has been set to 192.168.1.2 and the installer to use the 3 layer.

I have a number of PCs connected to my switch I want to use to administer my ESXi server and have access to the different VLANS.

VIRTUAL LANs, I need are the following

VLAN 1 192.168.1.x/24 By default / Internet Uplink
VLAN 12 10.0.12.x/24 Workstations
VLAN 13 10.0.13.x/24 Server management interface
VLAN 14 10.0.14.x/24 Public Interface Server
VLAN 15 10.0.15.x/24 Private server interface
VLAN 20 10.0.20.x/24 Storage

My esxi server has two network interfaces that will have traffic MGMT, Public and private configured as virtual interfaces in ESXi and one that runs my traffic of storage/nfs mounts on a QNAP NAS, I want to make it work on my network

Here is how I have the ports

A Port VLAN membership
G1 VLAN1
G13 - 20 VLAN 12

Need to access the VLAN 1, 13, 14, 15, 20

G9

VLAN 13, 14, 15

G10 VLAN 20
G7 - 8 VLAN 20 LAG configured to QNAP NAS

G13-20 are my workstations that need to be on VLAN 12, but must also be able to connect to 13, 14, 15, 20, SSH, RDP, NFS

G9 is the Interface of MGMT of ESXi who need to have traffic on VLAN 13, 14, 15

G10 is ESXi storage Interface that needs to access the VLAN 20 only

G7/g8 are connect to QNAP that ideally I want to configure as a LAG. When I get more interfaces in my ESXi Server I'll finally the team to match.

I set up an ip interface in my CISCO switch to 10.0.12.1 as gateway to my workstations and created a static route in my router to allow traffic to the switch. This does not quite yet.

I also installed a default route to 0.0.0.0

I followed a number of guides, but struggling to get my head around concepts and how to achieve the above configuration.

Ideally, I want to configure this through the CLI as Ive had no end of problems with the web interface of the Cisco switch.

I believe need g9 of trunk, and other ACCESS is it exact.

How the workstatations to access the other VLAN?

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Paul

Hi Paul, to break it down a little.

Host A connects to port 13.

config t

int gi0/13

switchport mode access

switchport access vlan 12

ESXI connects to port 9

config t

int gi0/9

switchport mode trunk

switchport trunk allowed vlan add 13-15 (keep in mind this vlan 1 is unmarked here and is the IP of your server interface)

This translates

ESXI = 192.168.1.x 24 gateway 192.168.1.2

interface vlan 1

IP 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0

no ip address dhcp

Host A = 10.0.12.x 24 10.0.12.1

interface vlan 12

name of the workstations

10.0.12.1 IP address 255.255.255.0

With this basic host configuration at shall communicate to ESXI (no other config on the switch)

If please try to get the connectivity of base first, then can work on the roads and DHCP.

• USB or HDD space for new server ESXi 5.5 updated 3 current enforcement?

Hello

We get a new DELL server to run ESXi 5.5 update 3.

Just find out there is an embedded version of ESXi 5.5 update 3 on a USB is connected.

We would like to know what meaning it is best to run ESXi - USB or Local HARD disk? I think that if she runs on the Local HARD disk, we can remote access via DRAC card. In addition, we do not use any local HD (i.e. no VSAN) and so there is no loss if VMware runs on the HD.

Your opinion is requested.

Thank you

Hello.

With ESXi on USB/SD is supported by VMware, so no problem here. Remember that if you use these devices, you'd probably set the partition scratching at some storage 'persistent '. I personally use one of the data stores for all guests, I have it in one place.

I don't understand why you assuming that through a port USB as a boot device will not provide access to DCUI via the DRAC? Boot device has no importance here...

• Add Server ESXi in Vcenter 5.5 cluster with a different number of socket

I have 5 nodes compute node IBM Flex System X 240 8737T7M with 2 CPU Socket in a VMS Cluster with identical hardware and now I need to add 1 more IBM System Flex X 240 node calculate 8737T7M with 1 CPU Socket in the same cluster.

Here are other points: -.

VCA Mode is disabled in this cluster.

5 existing and new are the same model of CPU and memory is of the same capacity.

Only the difference is 5 knots with 2 sockets and another node is 1. Please notice is recommended and he face any technical problem.

VMware ESXi 5.0 and Vcenter is 5.5

Hello

VCA mode is not required when the generations of CPU on the server is the same.

Adding your host in the cluster will work then.

He advised not to add servers to a cluster with mixed material config. A possible problem might be the Admission HA control for example settings. If you configure a number of hosts reserved for failover, you may encounter problems with your hosts do not match each other. Here, you define the ability to failover in percentage.

• Pass a vCenter Server ESXi to another with dvSwitch

Hello

I am actually preparing a migration of vCenter and have a few questions.

I'm migrating a cluster esxi 5.5 to one vCenter to another. The esxi server are configured with a distributed VM networking switch...

now, I would like to know if I can export the dvswitch configuration and import it on the new vcenter disconnect and reconnect esxi for the new vcenter Server?

in it's kb article is also to bring all virtual machines to a standard switch: KB VMware: ESX/ESXi host with vDS passing a vCenter Server to another

what I really need to move virtual machines first to a switch standard or is - this just for safety reasons? because I bring the configuration real the new vCenter dvswitch so it would stay the same dvswitch configuration?

Perhaps it is - can anyone help me...

Hello

I just wanted to say that you MUST first migrate all the dvswitch to the standard switch exchanges!

If you add the esxi with the distributed switch, the dvswitch disappeared and the virtual machines have no connection to network more

• A clustrer function of Intel and AMD mixed server ESXi does

I have a HP DL380p G8 which has 2 intel xeon CPUs (8 cores) and another HP DL385 G7 server with 1 CPU AMD Opteron 6134 (8 cores). Not now take place ESXi. We plan virtualization. Based on the VMware compatibility guide, two of these servers are ESXi 5.x supported. Although he said that the DL385 G7 needs 2 CPUs. Is this correct?

We do not have a lot of servers and according to virtualize, three ESXi servers be enough. Can I get an another DL380p of the G8 and have a cluster of two servers Intel ESXi based and a base of AMD server or all three servers should I run the same processor/vendor?

Thank you.

A.

Cluster of features such as vMotion (live migration) require processors from the same provider, supporting a common mode of EVC.

Where did you read that the AMD need hosts two processors? Currently I'm not aware of such a requirement.
