  • Can the "first run after update of Firefox" (aka. "What's New" and "Add-on compatibility check") be disabled?

    We intend to deploy an update to Firefox on our campus. The question I have is this: after the update, the "compatibility of the add-on Checker" appears, then the 'What's new' page appears during the first boot after the update. In this case: we use Deep Freeze to prevent kids to do any mischief based on software on the machines. But if we push the update at night, during maintenance windows, they will be frozen in the pre-first-time-run mode. So, whenever a student starts the PC after that, they will get the popup of compatibility both the "What's new" page

    Is there a way I can disable that during the upgrade, so that students will not have to click on these 2 points away? I would like for Firefox just silently disable incompatible modules and do not display the page "news". I found ways to do it, but they involve editing omni.jar and others. I'd rather have a formal, documented way to do this.

    Thank you!!

    Well, eventually nothing worked, except all the settings I wanted to put in part of mozilla.cfg. When I added your suggestion, and one I found on the web to disable add-on compatibility check, I finally have a Firefox that loads directly to the homepage, even after the upgrade.

    Here's what my mozilla.cfg file contains (to 6.0.2):

    // Disable any auto-updates.
    lockPref("app.update.enabled", false);
    lockPref("extensions.update.enabled", false);
    lockPref("browser.search.update", false);
    lockPref("browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone", "ignore");
    lockPref("extensions.checkCompatibility.6.0", false);

    Of course, I must make the byteshift-13 at it, but copy the Core\ file and the file firefox.js to Core\Defaults\Pref\ the round is played.

    Thanks for the help!

  • How to stop the tab 'Getting started with Mozilla Firefox' to open every time I open FF?

    Everytime I open FF, the tab "Getting started with Mozilla Firefox" opens. I checked and it is not in my list of homepage.

    If I open any additional windows, it does not open.

    But, once I close all the and reopen it again, the tab opens.

    I had a similar problem with some addons (ietab) do the same thing.

    I found the fix for it.

    About: config, filter for 'Start '

    Ones you want to should appear at the bottom.

    Startup.homepage_override_url and startup.homepage_welcome_url

    Double-click on each one and delete the text string. Close and reopen the window to check that it worked.

    As I deleted them both at the same time, I'm not sure who was the culprit. So, I suggest starting by striking first and tests before deleting this one.

  • Windows 7 installation hangs on the compatibility check

    I am trying to install Win7 (Home premium) update my Vista, but every time the installation starts a compatibility check and goes no further. I let go more than an hour with no progress.  I have run the Upgrade Advisor and it's compatible. So, how do the installation to ignore or perform this check?

    Troubleshooting tips to solve common problems when Windows 7 won't install - try everything you did not yet.

    1. start Windows Upgrade Advisor to see if there are known issues that might affect the installation and correct them.
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/downloads/Upgrade-Advisor

    2 disable any security software: anti-virus, firewall etc. Don't forget to activate the Afterwords.
    3 make sure that your computer has the BIOS and latest drivers. Update of the BIOS can be risky, don't do that if nothing else works.
    4. disconnect all external devices except the keyboard and mouse before installing.
    5. If using a video card and the computer has integrated video use and remove the video card.
    6 unplug the computer from the internet, if you have wireless disable.
    7. RAM (memory) - reduce the amount of RAM. 1 GB if 32-bit installation, 2 GB for 64-bit, then replace RAM if the upgrade was successful. If you added new RAM make sure it is also compatible.
    8. If you have several hard drives remove all except the one that you install Windows 7, and then replace it after Windows 7 is installed.
    9. If you have downloaded Windows 7 and it burned a DVD test burn again at the slowest speed possible. It is also possible the download may have errors, you can try to download it again.
    10. If you click 'Upgrade' to start the installation make sure that you take a supported upgrade path. You can't make a room upgrade: A) XP to Windows 7, B) changing bit type ex: 32 to 64-bit C) change the languages, D) decommissioning editions ex: Vista of the month last 7 Pro, or E) Vista Home Pro 7.

    11. check your RAM (memory) to find errors. Can take a long time, don't make that if nothing else has worked.
    (A) Insert the Windows 7 DVD and restart the computer.
    (B) start from the Windows 7 DVD.
    (C) select your language, and then click Next.
    (D) click on "repair your computer" then select the operating system to fix it.
    (E) click on the link of the Memory Diagnostics in the system recovery menu.
    (F) the computer will restart and your memory is checked for errors.

    12 turn off startup programs:
    (A) click Start, type MSCONFIG in the search box and press ENTER.
    OK the authorization of user account control and password if necessary
    If you are using XP: click Start, run, and type: MSCONFIG and click OK.
    (B) on the general tab, click Selective startup.
    (C) just below the selective startup, clear the checkbox "Load Startup items".
    (D) click the Services tab, check "Hide all Microsoft Services", and then click Disable all.
    (E) click OK, and then restart the computer.
    (F) try the upgrade again.

    (NOTE: If the upgrade fails and you continue to use your rear security software, then also go back into MSCONFIG and under the general Tower XP/Vista tab, click "Normal startup", and then click OK to exit.)

  • Can you please tell me how a) stop the compatibility check and b) stop which is the new page that appears every time. Thank you

    Having recently updated Firefox to version 20.0.1 I get the compatibility check every time and also the what's new page. Can you tell me how to disable them, please.

    Hello rodale, what you see is probably a side effect of firefox is not able to save some preferences in the profile folder.

    go in firefox > help > troubleshooting information, click on file/show profile folder and close all firefox windows later. a windows Explorer window should open - to delete the file named user.js.

    in case this has not solved the problem yet see also How to set preferences that will not save.

  • At the start of what Firefox says "could not load XPCOM.

    My desktop is running Windows 8, which recently crashed. Since then, whenever I start, 17.1 Firefox (which is in the folder startuo) does not load, but shows an error window saying (unable to load XPCOM). Rejecting the window then allows me to start Firefox myself. I uninstalled Firefox (but not personal stuff), downloaded a new copy of Firefox 17.1 and re-installed... same thing happens.

    Just to clarify... This only happens only once, after the initial start of the desktop computer. I close the error window and everything is fine after that.

    Bright ideas please?

    What makes XPCOM reference? A missing dll file? can I find this file elsewhere and move it to the correct location?

    Many ways.

    Thanks again for all the responses.
    I now put Firefox in my 8 and restarted Windows startup folder.
    All right, Firefox (or Thunderbird) starts as it is supposed to and there is no sign of an XPCOM related error message!
    So... I have to assume that the problem was (somehow) caused by crash my Windows 8 and that (somehow), remove the Win 8 of Firefox startup folder, restart, then put Firefox in the startup folder, and then restart, has put things back where they used to be. A little strange, but I hope that the above may be useful to someone else with a similar problem in the future.
    Well cordially to all.

  • I currently have Firefox 9.0. Why the start page for firefox keep telling me that I don't have the latest version?

    I currently have Firefox 9.0. Why the start page for firefox keep telling me that I don't have the latest version?

    You may need the old start page. Go to Firefox > Options and in the pane general, under Startup, click on restore by default. The page you have probably (http://google.com/firefox) only served to 3.6 (and tells you you are outdated), but some users seem to have gotten stuck on it after updating to Firefox 4 or upper version.

  • How to disable add on the compatibility check

    Just install firefox 6.0 and even if I have not noticed any difference until now with firefox 5.0, I noticed a small annoyance. Whenever I open Firefox 6.0 now, add it on the compatibility check runs! How can I prevent the it running every time? Firefox 5.0 never used to do that...
    Concerning

    It is possible that there is a problem with the files that store the registry extensions.

    Remove files (extensions.ini, extensions.cache, extensions.sqlite, extensions.rdf) extensions.* and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

    New files will be created if necessary.

    See "extension corrupted files:

    If you see people with disabilities, is not compatible extensions in "tools > Modules > Extensions ' and then click the Tools button, on the left side of the search bar (or click on the"Find updates"button in older versions of Firefox) to do a compatibility check or see if there is an update.

    Create a new profile as a test to see if your profile is the source of the problems.

    See basic troubleshooting: make a new profile:

    There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "tools > Modules > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

    If this new profile works then you can transfer files from the old profile to the new profile, but make sure not to copy corrupted files

  • Check the disc 'coherence' at startup about 3 times now (no more)

    Hello, I had a strange thing that I don't understand occur several times (3) start-up called "checking disk consistency." I am a moderately (or less) located user. I have windows XP: (, IE8, 32 - bit, SP3, hmm, that's all I think.) I would just know what that means and if there is anything I can do to fix (prefferably for free). Thank you very much!

    If you want to see if your volume/drive is 'dirty', why not just do this:

    Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    cmd

    Click OK to open the command prompt window.

    For example, to query the bit of impurity on drive C, type:

    fsutil dirty query C:

    The sample output:
    Volume c is dirty
    Volume C: is dirty

    Is your disc dirty or it is not dirty?

    Type "exit" to close the command prompt window.

    The reason is to try to understand why it comes randomly as chkdsk runs only if the disc dirty but the oringal title is: check the disc 'coherence' at startup about 3 times now (no more)

    I want to know why it happens sometimes and not
  • can I use my own background of start page in firefox?

    ICAN, I use my own background of start page in firefox as I can to the opera? See photo

    You can try to install https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools or https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/background-image - I think that they should allow Firefox to have a background image on the new tab Page, as it is in opera.

  • How can I make Thunderbird start car with windows startup

    How can I make Thunderbird start car with windows startup

    You can by placing a shortcut in the startup folder of windows, just like any other windows program.

    However if you do, you are likely to encounter problems such as downloading email while still load the antivirus and the network is busy, announcing the arrival of machines on the network (which can be a network a) and any other program of a dozen are loading is heavy risk of timeouts and disconnections of the server as well as error messages that make little sense because they are something that still load.

    The bottom line is so safe that you can, but if there are any questions bring her out of there first.

  • Can I put in start page for Firefox with a different search engine, not Google?

    I remove all things 'Google' from my computer. I want the Start Page for Firefox, because I can get to options, modules, etc. and I don't want to lose this.

    Easier is to select the preferred search engine in the search bar on the Navigation toolbar to see the name of this search engine in the pref browser.search.selectedEngine and copy its value to the browser.search.defaultenginename pref.

    Firefox should use this search engine on the subject: home page after a closing and restarting Firefox.

    If this isn't the case, then you can have an extension which is predominant, especially if the pref change.
