Complete restoration of the Server 2008 R2 vmware workstation for windows backup image 9

9 workstation.

I am trying to restore a backup of windows server r2 2008 (made with the built-in windows backup) on an existing installation of vmware server 2008 r2. Basically, I just want to replace the facility with the backup version.

The problem is, the windows to the backup image is on a USB key.

The restore process is:

  1. Connect the usb host drive
  2. Insert the windows server r2 DVD in drive
  3. initialize the Server 2008 r2 comments and press the button ESC at startup, then boot from the CD
  4. Select 'repair' installation
  5. but here's the problem, windows backup image is on my USB, but at this stage I do not see the USB key from the client in the repair installation process.

Ideas of the best way to do it?

Thank you

Okay, downloaded the ISO Image of Windows Server 2008 R2, created a new Virtual Machine, added the Windows Server backup and made a full backup without the destination for the backup drive, a USB Flash drive.

Started the virtual machine of the ISO Image and it does not see the backup from a USB Flash drive, although I can see it from the command prompt.

Also created a record gross hard pointing to the USB Flash drive and started the virtual machine of the ISO Image and he does not see the backup of the hard disk gross of the Flash USB drive, because the Virtual Machine had problems during the boot process.  Forget the exact error message, but I tried as a whole disk and a partition.  So the why I tested it by copying it to a normal file depending on the disc hard virtual (and worked).

Finally I created a regular file based hard and copied the backup folder of the USB Flash it and then started the virtual machine drive of the ISO Image and it had no problem see the backup from the normal file based hard.

It seems that you have to take the long way around, but at least, you should be able to see!

I know not when booting from the ISO Image or a disc of Windows Server 2008 R2, backup tools command line are available to restore the image however you could examine the issue.  I would like to but I just don't have the time at the moment.

    Thank you

Yes, but with some reservations.  Of course, Windows and Linux use different ways to represent the paths and devices so a few changes to the virtual machine may be necessary.  All that is hard coded in the configuration file .vmx depicting the paths of type Windows and device names must be changed by the GUI settings or manually edit the .vmx config file.  In addition any virtual machine containing snapshots where the parentFileNameHint in the DescriptorFile of disc, so drowned in a monolithicSparse or the first measure not binary snapshot virtual hard drive, which uses a QPF (fully qualified path name), it will have to be changed.  If you are unsure how to do this then I suggest a delete all snapshots before moving on to another system.

A Windows VM that fall under the WPA will in all likelihood have to be reactivated if the host CPU are not in the same class.

If you copy a Windows VM for the delivery of a copy on the source system, that you must have and or get the appropriate number of licenses and or product keys for the copy number you keep.

So you are saying I need to download the latest version of ESX/vSphere and then extract the VM Tools of which rpm?

It might be a way to get them, if you are unable to install the product.

The version will say vSphere 4.0 be OK for ESXi 3.5 VMs?

  • How to change VMware Server 2 in VMware Workstation?

    People,

Hello. I installed VMware Server 2.0.2 in Windows 7 host. Then, I created a virtual machine and install Windows Server 2003 as a guest operating system. I installed some application programs in the Windows Server 2003 operating system, and has done a lot of work into them. Everything works successfully for some time.

Because VMware Server 2 does not support Windows 7 as host operating system. Strange thing can happen anytime. While I work in Guest OS Win2K3, the connection is suddenly lost. VMware Server 2 home page can not be displayed anymore. The virtual machine and the Win2K3 comments is no longer accessible.

I have to install VMware Workstation that supports Windows 7 as host operating system and Windows Server 2003 as a guest operating system. So, I have 2 questions:

First of all, if I uninstall VMware Server 2 on Windows 7, does it affect the virtual machine that supports the Windows Server 2003 OS?  Everything, including the OS Winn2K3 and its application programs, will be lost?

Second, if I install VMware Workstation in Windows 7, can the Guest OS Windows Server 2003 be transferred from VMware Server 2 VMware Workstation?

People can help answer these 2 questions?

If uninstall VMware Server 2 on Windows 7 and its Guest OS Win2K3 will be lost, I'll lose a lot of time and work!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

You can uninstall vmware server without any problems and you will not lose your vm.

Anyway just for more security you can make a backup of the virtual machine before you uninstall vmware server 2. Just backup files of the virtual machine. Then you can uninstall the server and install workstation

After the workstation installation, you would be able to run the virtual machine in workstation, simply add the virtual machine to the workstation inventory, pointing to the .vmx files for the virtual machine.

In any case if you can not run the virtual machine, you can use vmware converter to perform the conversion between server and workstation. It is a good tool and it does not hurt to learn how to use it

    Hope this helps you.

    Best wishes / Saludos.

  • How to locate the location of a VMware Workstation v10.0.3 vmdk readers when stereotypes are present.

Re: How to find the location of a VMware Workstation v10.0.3 vmdk readers when stereotypes are present.

    Hello

Since nearly five months, I have worked on a particular project and am reviewing me with the details of the project. The virtual machine has three virtual disks. I remember the BONES of the virtual machine as well as the first disc of the vmdk virtual machine data files are in the Windows host file containing the virtual machine. Nothing unusual so far. I remember that I put the third disk of the virtual machine on my axis f: physical, but I want to make sure that before you start again work on the project.

I see of http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1003880 we should be able to examine the vmx file and see the locations of virtual disk. What I've noticed, is that since I was a snapshot, I see this:

    scsi0:2.present = 'TRUE '.

    scsi0:2.filename = "MyProject-Disk3 - 000001.vmdk".

So what I see in the vmx is the physical location of the disk snapshot delta and not the physical location of the vmdk.

I also did a search for vmware vmdk files - x.log and I find:

    2014 03-21 T 11: 35:46.964 - 04:00 | Worker #2 | I120: DISKLIB-DSCPTR: open [0]: "sample - Disk3.vmdk" (0xe)

    2014 03-21 T 11: 35:46.964 - 04:00 | Worker #2 | I120: DISKLIB-LINK: opened 'F:\MyProject-Disk3\MyProject-Disk3.vmdk' (0xe): monolithicSparse, 83886080 sectors / 40 GB.

    2014 03-21 T 11: 35:46.964 - 04:00 | Worker #2 | I120: DISKLIB-LIB: open 'G:\VMware VMs\MyProject\MyProject-Disk3-000001.vmdk' (0xa, type monolithicSparse flags).

So by brute force, I discovered that the parent for the VM Disk3 vmdk is the physical disk F. And even here, the only reason why I know that I have the right VM disk, because I included "Disk3" in the VM disk naming convention that I used.

But what happens if I hadn't used a physical VM disk naming convention which did not include the name of the virtual disk of the virtual machine? How could 100% sure that the third disk of my VM was the vmdk parent that I had located on the physical disk F?

There must be an easier way to do this for days just like that.

I look forward to your reply.

    Kind regards...

P.S. I noticed that if I close this virtual machine and click on the 3 hard drive (SCSI), it only shows the name of the file of the virtual delta "MyProject-Disk3 - 000001.vmdk" machine and not the parent vmdk.

P.S. I noticed that if I close this VM and try using the disk utilities, the map shows that the path to the file delta 'MyProject-Disk3 - 000001.vmdk' and the parent vmdk.

Virtual disk snapshot files have the file name of the virtual disk parent included in the file descriptor hard (text file), or in the hard data file according to the format of the virtual disk. In the case of a monolithic virtual disk format (i.e. a hard single file), you may need to use a hex editor to find the 'parentFileNameHint' somewhere between 0x200 and 0x400.

  • How to work the Optimus compared to VMware Workstation 8 with enable 3D

Hi, I am doing some performance tests in VMware Workstation

There are some improvements to run VMware using the Nvidia card or there is no improvement at all, and it's better to use default Intel card?

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate host and as a guest Windows 7 Ultimate so I can compare with the windows experience.

    Host:

    Comments:

    screenshot.2.jpg

Another thing I found interesting is why the performance of the hard disk are the same, but the memory is quite low in comparation with the speed of the host

Is it normal? Can I improve the performance of the memory procesor or 3D in some way?

As the comparation that I am very interested in the functioning of memory per second.

There is always some trouble when virtual hardware running and it is not that you can do to improve except to avoid paging, the latest version of VMware Workstation and have the updated drivers.

The Windows experience index is also a pretty poor excuse for reference so according to what are your objectives is better there tools like pass etc.

What type of workload are underway in the virtual machine?

  • 6u2 ESXi host nested on VMware Workstation for Linux referee v12

    Hello all, I have

I have a lab environment virtual running in VMware Workstation for Linux v12, and my ESXi hosts do not work correctly on one of the virtual networks. All my troubleshooting suggests a problem with nested ESXi hosts that may be a bug, but I want to assure you that I did everything properly first. That's why I post here with the hope that if I made a mistake that maybe someone else can point out he me.

    Physical system

8 core Intel Xeon 2.1 GHz CPU

    128 GB of RAM

OS - kernel Linux 64 - bit w/3.19.0-32-generic Linux Mint 17.3 (fully updated from this announcement)

VMware Workstation 12 Pro - 12.1.1. Build-3770994 (fully updated from this announcement)

    Nested ESXi host VM

ESXi v6.0.0 (Build 3825889, completely updated from this announcement)

4 cards 'physical' (only 3 used for now)

-all use the e1000 NIC hardware virtual, but also tried vmxnet3 NIC with no difference

    -vSwitch0 use vmnic0 & 1 vmnet16 of virtual network in a pair of active / standby

    -vSwitch1 uses vmnic2 on network virtual vmnet18

-vmk0 used for management on vSwitch0 and vmk1 for iSCSI on vSwitch1

-"Promiscuous" mode and forged passes enabled on all Port vSwitch groups (activating or turning off these features makes no difference)

    Test performed until now

I checked that all the IP addresses and network masks used are correct.

With the help of vmkping I ping other nodes on the network vmnet16 with success.

With the help of vmkping I tried to ping the other nodes in the network vmnet18, but that has failed.

I have depolyed other non - ESXi VMs on the vmnet18 network, and they are able to ping each other, but are unable to ping or ping by the ESXI host.

I tried various material virtual NIC as mentioned before, but without changes in the results.

I tried to use only local network instead of the vmnet18 guest network segments with no change in results.

When I find out the status of the network adapters on the ESXi host through vCenter or host incorporated client vmnic0 & 1 time display network information, but vmnic2 shows no networks. Yet, I know that there is a network with different VM communicate on it. Moreover, I was able to get all of this work on a Windows system running 10 Workstation (this is the laptop that my employer gives me with).

Having built nested ESXi labs on different platforms as well as physical environments in the past, I'm very confused as to why I can't get this special configuration to work. At this point my gut tells me that this is probably a bug any with the nested themselves ESXi hosts. Since I can get all this work on vmnet16 including the management of ESXi hosts and the VCSA that I use, I am sure that my vSwitch configuration is correct (other than the IP address space and vmnic configurations is bascially the same). Because I can get other virtual machines to communicate over the network vmnet18 I don't see how can be a VMware Workstation for the issue physical Linux host. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? I read on the ESXi hosts nested under VMware Workstation after having known problems and bugs with networking. If anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks for any help others can provide!

    Kind regards

    Patrick

Well, the problem is now resolved. The problem was what covelli was trying to explain, but I couldn't because the physical host network adapters being mentioned.

The problem on the Linux host, but it was a problem of permissions with the virtual Ethernet adapters. The following article has the fix:
With the help of Ethernet virtual cards in Promiscuous Mode on a Linux host (287) | VMware KB

Even if I launched the workstation under the root user I have yet met this problem and which still makes no sense to me, but change the permissions solve the problem. I was not getting an error message on my Linux Mint and Ubuntu system, but when I tried on a second box of Linux Mint that I just got the error has been generated, and the error message was the above link it contains.

    So, here's what I learned:

    (1) the question has nothing to with a VMware Workstation definition that you can configure.

    (2) the question has nothing to do with a physical network card.
    (3) the question has nothing to do with any vmnic on the nested ESXi host.

    (4) apparently virtual Ethernet adapters are not the correct permissions when created.

All you have to do to fix this is:

    (1) open a terminal.

    (2) run the command ' sudo chmod a + rw/dev/vmnet * "(don't forget to run this each time that you create a new virtual network).

You can also create a group, as shown in the link above and simply give this group the correct permissions. Personally, I think it's easier to just give everyone the rw permission.

I appreciate the help that others have offered. I did not understand what was asked for in previous answers because of the terms that have been used.
