Copy or duplicate virtual machines

I installed ESXi 3.5 and I use VMware Infrastructure Client to manage.

How can I copy/duplicate existing virtual machines the simplest and fastest way?

I tried to copy files between folders, but the server hanging, so I presume that there is a better way...

Concerning

Marius

Simplest is to clone virtual machines, but this feature is not available in free ESXi, you have vCenter.

So I guess the only way is to use FastSCP (free tool), download power power VM off to your office and new different directory. Then right click on .vmx datastore browser and "add to the inventory.

  • Disable copying files between virtual machines

When I go to several virtual desktops using VMware View 4, I am able to copy files between virtual machines. Virtual machines are located in various isolated networks. It is a security problem in my organization and how do I disable this feature? I am not able to find any related configuration in sight connection to the server. Thank you!

I assume you are using RDP as the Protocol currently, correct?

In this case, you will need to implement some GPO:s in the workstations to avoid copy and paste.

Look in the 'Extras' folder on the view connection server, there are a number of ADM files that you can implement to restrict all sorts of things.

  • Cannot copy file to virtual machine host computer

    People,

Hello. I use VM Player 3. My host computer is Windows 7 and VM is Oracle Linux 5. I used to copy files from the virtual machine host successfully machine. But now, when I copy a virtual machine host machine zip file, the error message appears:

"Unable to write file in Virtual Machine.Aborting the copy file operation."

The virtual machine's memory is 2 GB, and the file is about 900 MB. I think that there is enough memory to hold the file.

    My question is:

Any folk can help solve the question above?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

To be able to copy this file in your virtual machine, you need about 2 GB of free space on the disk in the virtual machine on the disk that has the temp folder.

The size of the RAM to the virtual machine is not really important.

  • Need help with copy/move a virtual machine to Mac Pro for MacBook Pro

    Hello

I have Fusion 7.1.1 installed on my Mac Pro (lap) and my MacBook Pro (laptop). I am copying my virtual Windows machine 8.1 of the tower to the laptop. I copied the. vmwarevm file from the tower to the laptop. When I try to import the virtual machine in Fusion on the laptop it is grayed out. I don't know why 'find Virtual Machines' does not work either.

    Thanks for any help,

    Steve

Have you tried "Open and run" in the file menu of Fusion with the 8.1 Win as target VM?

Note that if it works, ask if it has been copied or moved. If you Copied, renewal may be necessary because the MAC address has been changed.

I suggest that you use the data store 'Browse' and then copy into the complete file to the desired location

Only ks once again for all the help!

Take a look at Re: how to keep or ignore the UUID when you power on a virtual machine

This discussion addresses the same topic to answer the question if the VM was copied or moved. As to the significance of this issue, see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1541. Basically, it is about creating a new UUID and MAC address of the VM (I copied it) or keep the same as the source (I moved it).

  • Copy of ESX virtual machine to Workstation

I managed a number of virtual machines hosted in a datacenter on ESX 4.  I had a request from a colleague to get a copy of a virtual computer so that it can work with it using VMware Workstation.  It is my understanding that simply copying the virtual machine are not working files of the ESX host to a laptop.  I was under the impression that the virtual machine should be converted using VMware Converter.  I also had the impression that there may be problems associated with the different chipsets: ESX host uses a chipset, while my colleague's cell phone uses a different chipset.

Can anyone confirm or deny the above?  Are there other issues that we should be aware of when you copy a virtual machine from one ESX host to a laptop (Windows XP I think)?

    See you soon,.

    Paul

Here are a few methods described.  For me, the converter is the best option because he can take care of any change in format which may arise between the VM ESX and VMware Workstation VM.

  • Best way to make a copy of a virtual machine in ESXi 4 and the free version of vSphere client

    Hello

    I have:

    ESXi 4 Update 1, vSphere 4.0 Build 208167, vmware converter 4.0.1 client build 16.12.34

VM is Windows Server 2008 R2 Ent

I'm trying to make a clone of a virtual machine for the purpose of creating one server of another out of it.  I use the converter and still after I have successfully connected to the virtual machine, I always get the error "Unable to get information about the selected machine material" when you click Next.

My goal is to create a virtual machine.  Put an operating system on it, and then just use it as a model to create other virtual machines.  Is there a way to make that either is not involved or pay for an upgrade order lines?

If it means order lines, could someone please go through the steps to achieve this?

It would be great if I could understand why the converter does not work.  I heard I could drop-down list for version 3.0, but I could not find it available for download.

    Thank you!

Name change is not necessary, as the vmdk files will be isolated in the new VM folder. If you want to rename on the concern of the Organization, you will need the vmkfstools on RCLI user, but I think really is not so necessary, so you do not use complicated distributions of disc inside your data store.

About converter, I just wanted to know how you use it. Nevermind install again, I had kind of her. Check the settings change VM, on the Options tab, if the guest operating system is configured correctly. Even if this is the case, change to another, click ok and then configure it to the right and test to boost conversion.

  • Copy of the virtual machine

    Hello

We have Rhel4 VM and you want to take backup of the virtual machine. But I see so many files .vmx, hard, etc...  I want to take backup of the operating system, applications, and all settings. Should what file I consider?

A fragmented file develops according to its use up to the configured maximum size.

A flat file is allocated in advance and all the space is taken immediately.

Pieces of 2 GB is created if this option has been chosen for the drive to run on hosts that do not support large files.

  • Cloning a Virtual Machine, including ITS SNAPSHOTS

I have a virtual machine with 2 photos and I want to this clone to another disk, such as snapshots are available in the clone. I am currently using VMWare Workstation 10.0. I read a few threads on this topic, but I'm not clear if this can be done or not. I can close the virtual machine and only care about downtime.

    Hello

    1. stop the virtual machine,

    2. close VMware Workstation.

    3. a complete copy of the virtual machine file to a new folder.

    4. Launch VMware Workstation

5 file open-> Select copied VM

    6. choose 'move' on the question, "did you copy or move...» "If you want new hardware, select"Copy"If you want the virtual machine to have new material.

    Basically, that's all.

Note that the new material will trigger things like windows activation to require a new license.

Also note that if you do not receive new material that you can have your machine clone in the same network as the original (among others)

  • Move a virtual machine from one SAN to another

Top o ' the morning, tech heads,

I have a VM, I need to move from one san to another. I think I'll need to shut down the guest operating system, download all the files (see image), create a lun on the san of destination, then download the files to that lun. Lack of vmware 5.5. Is that what that sounds right?

Your ESXi host vSphere is a stand-alone type or is managed by vCenter? If managed by vCenter, just make a Storage vMotion... If not, take a look at this article: VMware KB: move or copy of a virtual machine in a VMware environment
