Copy the virtual machine files

Hello

I would like to know if I had to copy a virtual machine on my personal laptop, what files should I copy? Told me that VMDK files are not enough. That is why I want to what files exactly?

And also if my application VM and the VM database are 2 different servers, it will work if I copy them and run them on my laptop?

Thank you.

If you laptop is isolated from the area, you'll need to local users account on the virtual machine, so I suggest you note the local administrator account and the password and check if this account is activated.

Just a further point, if the services in the system VMs depends on domain services, for example: If you are using a domain account to run, you need will change this setting to use the local account and give the necessary permission for this local account.

My default is set to MACHINES C:\VIRTUAL.  But I want to change it to turn to an external drive connected with an eSata cable. Can I do this?

    Hello

Add just like a new data store.

Login to your web access, select your host (not the virtual machines) in the left menu.

You should see a link on the right side with "Add data store", give it a name of store and add the directory.

Now, you can add a virtual machine to this place.

    Good luck!

  • The virtual machine files

    Hello;

Just noticed that in my data store, there are several folders to a single virtual machine, e.g. VM-Marketing, it also has Marketing_1-VM and VM-Marketing_2.

When I go on the 'change settings' of this virtual machine, in the hardware tab, and on the hard drive, it's going to [datastore] VM-Marketing_2/VM - Marketing.vmdk.

Then in the General Options in the 'Options' tab, the Configuration of the VM tab is [datastore] VM-Marketing_2/VM - Marketing.vmx

It seems that my VM it working in the VM-Marketing_2 file in the data store, what about the other two?, this virtual machine, it is quite heavy, it has a 80 GB HARD drive and I have 3 of them if total 240 GB, so can I remove them?, is there something I can do atin the VCenter?

    Thanks for your time...

Welcome to the community - VM when is created ESX, it will use the name of the default computer name of directory where the virtual machine and its files will be stored - if a directory with that name already exists, it increments the directory with _1, _2 etc - so I am betting by the same VMs na, e were created before the one you have currently in production - Maybe the intention had been to delete these virtual machines, but when they have been deleted, rather than by selecting delete from the disk - remove inventory has been selected which will keep the directory structure.

  • help with the virtual machine files

Today I got the error when I tried to open my virtual machine below.  I have searched the forums and seen the text file/script but does not know to use.

  • Rename all the virtual machine files in the data store

    Hello

We have renamed one of the name of the server of our virtual machine running on esx3.5. In addition, we have renamed this server in VC to reflect the new name of the server. Please tell us how we can rename all files in this virtual machine residing in the data store to reflect the new name of the server.

    Appreciate your quick response.

    Thanks in advance...

You can use sVMotion and move it to another data store or migrate from cold.  Two tasks will rename the underlying set of files.

Yes, you can copy the Virtual Machine to it or use to try a snapshot to take/remove or use it as the destination when using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone.  Search the Forum that this was widely covered before.

  • An error occurred during the restoration of the virtual machine

    Hello world

I pause my vmware and when I try to restore it I have this error

    «An error occurred in restoring the State of the virtual machine files "C:\Users\Asus\Documents\Virtual Machines\Windows Server 2008 R2 x64\Windows Server 2008 R2 x 64 - acc901af.vmss»»

    Thank you

My suggestion would be to remove the State Suspended (.vmss) of the Virtual Machine file.  Note that the removal of the waking state has the same effect as when you perform a hard reset of the virtual machine, or by pushing the reset button on a physical computer, in that all data in unsaved open applications is lost!  However if the virtual machine resume so I don't see any other choice to try to run the Virtual Machine.

  • Could not open the virtual machine

I used the customer convertor to create this virtual machine from one which works well on ESxi.  When I try to open on Win7-64 machines running vmplayer 3.1.4 I get the following error:

    Could not open the virtual machine: file "D:\Data\VM Machines\WW S2008_32\WW S2008_32.vmx 10_1 10_1" line 1: syntax error.

    Any ideas?

"" "WW 10_1 S2008_32.vmx.zip" attached file contains the "WW 10_1 S2008_32.vmx" file created under VMware Player 3.1.4 and was then modified to reflect the values of parameter that you might want to stay the same as uuid etc.  Start VMware Player and then check the settings before running the virtual machine.

  • Size of the virtual machines on the local data store

What is the best way to determne the (total) disk space using a virtual machine? We have several virtual machines on local data warehouses and would like to estimate roughly how much disk space to the total number of virtual machines use to caculate how much storage SAN, they will consume. Is there an 'easy' way to socket this information?

The most accurate way would be to calculate the total space used by the virtual machine files in the data store.

    Connect to the service console

    Navigate to the vmfs volume

    Navigate to the vm folder

    -h.

This will give you files for this particular virtual machine related to the amount of disk space used by all the vm

  • How to create the virtual machine to a virtual machine existed file?

I have two hard drives on my VMware host. There are virtual machines on a SATA drive, how do I list these files of virtual machines and copy one of them to create a new virtual machine (it can save a lot of my time!). I did this way on VMware server 2.0 because I can see what they were and where they were under Windows. But on vSphere, how can I do? Maybe you guys have other ways to do it?

    Thank you!

    George

On vSphere, I suggest you use autonomous vConventer instead. It is quite simple and easy to use. Alternatively, you can copy or clone the virtual disk to the virtual machine via the Console (ESX) Service offline

    Summary:

    VMware workstation: 7.0.1 build 227600

host of os: Vista sp2, 64-bit

    (16 GB of ram)

    guest operating system: sles10 sp2 64-bit (4 GB ram)

    the virtual machine folder:

drive eSATA (samsung 320, blacx attachment)

    symptom: guest vm

does not start: says "the specified file is not a virtual disk.

history: this particular comments works fine; I've done about 30 shots

during the last 2 months.  The guest is not a copy - even if she did start life as a full-clone

another linux-client with or without an operating system installed.  In any case, I've used it to very good

    effect for 2 months now.

So last night I wanted to power off of the host, while I lived my usual steps:

    (1) stop my os of burst (# shutdown - h now)

    (2) even worksation vmware (file - & gt; exit)

    (3) stop start vista (not "suspend" but the real stop turn off the power).

    (4) visa bluescreened.  Now she is doing this every so often, so I thought that it would be

    a big deal.

    (5) this morning I tried to turn on the virtual machine and I got the 'not a virtual disk' error.

My best guess at this point is the bluescreen stopped some write cache to be

flushed to disk.  The funny thing is, after the previous bluescreens 3 or 4, the

Comments to restart without a hitch.

shrug In any case, just to be weave, I disabled write Vista for outside cache

device (set to security policy / deletion in Device Manager).  Seems smarter to

    an external device.

    Spare part

    Attached is a file cant_start.zip (191KO) containing:

dircontents.txt - directory of the client's file listing
    sles10_sp2. NVRAM
    sles10_sp2.vmsd
    sles10_sp2.vmx
    sles10_sp2.vmxf
VMware.log - other requests asked for *.log files, so I thought
VMware - 0.log - I should send him these as well.
    VMware - 1.log
    VMware - 2.log
    \ui-logs - 2 IU-logs from C:\Users\jgreve\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware-jgreve
\vmdk_files - subdirectory of *.vmdk files, light, & can be useful
    -end-

I checked the VMDK and newspapers - and the VMDK all look great.

Last departure also seems to succeed?

As it seems that instant 36 is not used so far - I was just going to throw it away and try again.

To do this, you would change the line vmx file

    scsi0:0. FileName = 'suse11.2_x64 - cl1 - 000036.vmdk.

    TO

    scsi0:0. FileName = 'suse11.2_x64 - cl1 - 000035.vmdk.

and then try to restart the virtual machine. If that works then remove all the

    suse11.2_x64 - cl1 - 000036-* files

  • Import the virtual machine created with .exe files

    Hello

I'm new in the world of the virtual machines, and I'm sorry if I'm going to say something stupid.

I take a .net class and the teacher has a virtual machine (windows XP with software) ready to pose with 4 .exe files.

I installed VMfusion but now I have no idea how / if I can import the teacher VM fusion.

Is this possible? If this is not the case, what can I do else?

    Thank you very much

    Luca

Find a Windows PC and run the exe files to extract the virtual machine, precompiled.  Just copy the folder of the entire virtual machine on your Mac, and then open/run the virtual machine using the merger.  VMware virtual machines are portable between products and host operating system - there should be no reason to "convert" or "import".

  • Windows on VM - says my copy of Windows 7 on the virtual machine is not authentic

I have the Virtual Machine on a Mac and am running Windows 7 on the virtual machine.  I get a message that my copy of windows is not genuine, so, how do I get a product key.
I get a message from Microsoft that this copy of Windows is not supported.  If I need to buy Windows overall, how can I download it to VM?

You can purchase a license for the edition you installed and change the key and activate it on the Internet.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/buy/default.aspx

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/get-a-new-Windows-product-key

Click Start, right click on computer

    Click on properties

Scroll down to the Windows Activation

Click on the link "change product key".

Enter the product key and click next to activate via the Internet.

  • Is it necessary that the guest OS to support SSD if the file of the virtual machine is placed on an SSD?

    Dear,

I have a plan to set up a file of the virtual machine on an SSD. The host system is windows 10 (on an other SSD, I'll use 2 SSD), it should support the SSD very well.  Then comes the question: should I also install an OS that needs support also guest SSD?

My opinion is it does not matter since the disk i/o operation is made by host operating system, it is the host operating system which finally determin whick block data will be published (optimization of the disk).

    Am I wrong? Thank you.

    Sorry for the enigmatic answer...

In your case, the answer is Yes: he cares about the type of media, while the virtual disk is a vmdk (virtual material treaty) and placed in an SSD.

There are a few cases where you might use a physical disk directly to the virtual machine (called peripheral raw disk or RDM in vSphere environment).
