  Hello.. I'm shooting with a Nikon D7000, which is a bit too much for me because I need something that is more entry-level and was interested in purchasiing a Nikon d5500 has been added and was doing research on reviews of the camera when I came across this:

I tried GIMP too, and he will NOT use the NEF files without a lot of hacking with plug-ins, which are horrible to work with the program. I LOVE THE CAMERA, hates the attitude of NIKON. BEWARE, the recommendation is only if you want to use JPEG and never need to the NAVE, nothing to do with the exception are taking place on your hard drive.

  
  

  I really liked the fact that the d5500 has been added was an easy to operate camera, but I do use Lightroom and Photoshop... and RAW format and want to also 24 pixels and really liked the touch screen and built in wi - fi. I shoot mostly wildlife and birds I am open to any suggestions on another camera but have to sell my D7000 first and then store in the Park same ball around 700-$800 I hope with a lens or two... any info there would be really appreciated!  Thank you very much!

  Not Camera Raw, Lightroom uses the plug-in. Currently, there is NO support for NEF files in Lightroom. Download Camera Raw 8.8 won't fix it.   Photoshop elements 11 will use only up to Camera Raw 7.4. You'll either need to upgrade Photoshop Elements or use the free DNG Converter provided by Adobe. The latest version of the DNG Converter is 9.1.

  For the problem of camera raw, every new device has its own raw format, and ACR must be updated to include the latter. Happened yet for the d5500 has been added, so you'll just have to use the Nikon software until Adobe gets the info and releases an updated version of ACR. It is not uncommon to be in your situation, if you buy a camera model that was only a month. You just wait a bit.

  The d5500 has been added just launched and Adobe working on support. Can't say how long for sure, but it should be a month or two. Meanwhile, you can shoot in NEF + JPEG and set Camera Raw to open your JPEG files as well. Not much data, but will be better than nothing...

  No, it isn't. In fact, it is not supported by ANY version of Lightroom at the moment. DNG converter 8.8 supports the model, and you can use it to create DNG copies that can be used in Lightroom 4.4. But the d5500 has been added will never be supported in Lightroom 4.4. Support probably will come in the next update or upgrade.
