Csrss.exe computer crashes

Have compaq 5420 with 512 MB of Ram (max) at least once a day, the computer crashes upward.  When I check the Task Manager, it says that this file (csrss.exe) uses 65 to 97% of the time cpu.  Tried to stop the process, but it isn't allower, because it is a critical system file. I have to restart and power-downthe computer.

I ran SFC/scannow - no effect.  I scanned the entire hard drive with Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S & D. Adaware, Iolo AntiVirus, IOBit Security 360.  I use PCTools firewall.  Have SP Sp3 and updates.

Would appreciate any help.

Thank you PC-TESTER.  You were Left.  Sorry for the delay in recognition.  I use Comodo FW

  • What is the current version of csrss.exe for windows XP

    I'm under ' Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

    The version of csrss.exe I have on my machine is: 5.1.2600.5512

    This is the latest version?

    If this isn't the case, should I update?

    If update is recommended, where can I download the right version for my computer?

    Here's what I have XP Pro SP3:

    This confirms my suspicions you have (or had) malware. This version of csrss.exe is for service Pack 2 of Windows XP.
    You really need to run MBAM.
    But despite this, if you run at the SP2 level, it is unclear what might make its way onto your PC. There are some out there extremely difficult to detect rootkits. You find you might need to perform a clean installation. If you would rather fight infection, you can always look for guided help:

    Hello

    To do: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/322756/

    How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

    You can refer to the following steps:

    * Click Start > run

    * Type regedit and press to enter.

    * Search HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

    * Right-click on winlogon, and select export.

    * Save the reg file to a location incase you must cancel the following changes.

    * In winlogin search shell and double-click it.

    * Change the value of "Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\csrss.exe" just "Explorer.exe".

    * Save changes and disconnect and reconnect.

    * Restart the computer.

    One of my two computers can no longer access the internet - missing csrss.exe.

    The computer is running XP (service pack 3) and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

    Symptom: When initialize - upward, he says he can't find csrss.exe in the directory: C:\Docum...~1\...\...\...\csrss.exe

    He suggested to delete the reference to it in the registry.

    ========================================

    In fact, after a search, my computer has csrss.exe, but not, in the directory, he said he couldn't find csrss.exe.

    Don't know if "Deleting the reference in the registry" would work.  (I don't know how to do, so I have not tried).

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Thinking just copy csrss.exe (already in my computer) in that directory where the computer said that it could not find.

    Problem: I can not locate this alleged directory by using Windows Explorer.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    PS: The MSE has deleted the copy of csrss.exe (I could have allowed the action) in the directory assumed, because he was in

    in the wrong place and this copy of csrss.exe could be a virus and are not a genuine copy of csrss.exe.

    Although the csrss process is a legitimate windows file, malware can often assume the name of legitimate files in an attempt to deceive the user. I recommend that you analyze firstly your computer with Malwarebytes which can be downloaded from the link below. Make sure that update you it before analysis. You can choose to run a quick scan.
